Burden and well-being among dementia caregivers in Puerto Rico: the role of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Dementia is more prevalent in Puerto Rico than in the U.S. mainland, increasing demands for caregiving. However, research on the mental health impact of dementia caregiving among island Puerto Ricans is sparse. We examined caregiver burden and depressive symptoms among Puerto Rican dementia caregivers while also considering behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). METHODS: Using data from the Puerto Rican Elder: Health Conditions (PREHCO) study (Wave 3), 132 caregivers of PREHCO participants requiring care completed an ancillary data collection, of whom 101 cared

A retrospective evaluation of adjunctive risperidone treatment in severely behaviorally disordered boys receiving psychosocial treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of risperidone and psychosocial treatment as compared to psychosocial treatment alone in reducing disruptive behavior in adolescents with persistent conduct disorder (CD). METHOD: This was a retrospective study of the treatment records of 129 delinquent males diagnosed with childhood onset and persistent CD. Sixty youths were prescribed risperidone in addition to psychosocial treatment. These youths were compared to a similar group of 69 youths who received treatment that did not include risperidone. The outcome measure was

The tea weevil, Myllocerinus aurolineatus, is attracted to volatiles induced by conspecifics.

The tea weevil, Myllocerinus aurolineatus (Voss) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a leaf-feeding pest of Camellia sinensis (O.Ktze.) with aggregative behaviors that can seriously reduce tea yield and quality. Although herbivore-induced host plant volatiles have been shown to attract conspecific individuals of some beetle pests, especially members of the Chrysomelidae family, little is known about the volatiles emitted from tea plants infested by M. aurolineatus adults and their roles in mediating interactions between conspecifics. The results of behavioral bioassays revealed that volatile compo

The effect of early specific feeding on food conditioning in cats.

Four cats were fed with beef only (beef cats) and 4 cats were fed with tuna only (tuna cats) during the first 6 months of their lives. Thus, they were deprived of a variety of food tastes. The cats then were trained in instrumental conditioning. After criterion performance was achieved, they were retrained with alternated food: In the beef cats, tuna was used, and in tuna cats, beef was used. There were six stages with alternated food. The beef cats acquired a pushing response markedly slower than the tuna cats because they often refused to eat the beef reward. Moreover, both the beef and the

The suppressing effect of chlorpromazine treatment on alimentary-social differentiation in amygdala dogs.

Experiments were performed on dogs with bilateral electrolytic damage of dorso-medial amygdala. Before the operation dogs were trained in alimentary-social reward differentiation. It consisted in conditioning of instrumental responses of either right or left foreleg to two different tones respectively. Chlorpromazine was injected intramuscularly in 1.5 mg/kg dose during four consecutive days, beginning at third to fifth week after the operation. Amygdala damage produced significant deterioration of the instrumental performance both reinforced by food and by social-sensory rewards. Chlorpromazi

Effect of naltrexone on food intake, hunger, and satiety in obese men.

Increasing doses of naltrexone (25 to 200 mg) given over 4 consecutive days reduced intake of laboratory luncheon meals by 30% in 17 obese men. Meal size remained suppressed in the laboratory during the week following naltrexone administration. Water intake in the laboratory and body weight were not affected. Rates of ingestion and subjective ratings suggested that naltrexone reduced appetite rather than promoted early satiation. Nausea and other side effects occurred on 1 or 2 days during the naltrexone week in seven subjects whose food intake was reduced. Food intake was also reduced in seve

Behavioural pharmacology of food, water and salt intake in relation to drug actions at benzodiazepine receptors.

Drugs which are agonists at benzodiazepine receptors produce many interesting behavioural effects, and amongst these are the stimulation of food, water and salt intake. This review examines the evidence for benzodiazepine effects on these forms of ingestion, and makes tentative proposals about their modes of action. The recent advent of putative benzodiazepine antagonists and inverse agonists provides important new pharmacological tools for the analysis of factors which control ingestion. Preliminary data on examples of such drugs are considered. Anorectic effects of inverse agonists are descr

Sex differences in the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia: A new window to executive and behavioral reserve.

INTRODUCTION: Biological sex is an increasingly recognized factor driving clinical and structural heterogeneity in Alzheimer's disease, but its role in the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is unknown. METHODS: We included 216 patients with bvFTD and 235 controls with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from a large multicenter cohort. We compared the clinical characteristics and cortical thickness between men and women with bvFTD and controls. We followed the residuals approach to study behavioral and cognitive reserve. RESULTS: At diagnosis, women with bvFTD showed greater

[A case of adult neuroblastoma arising in the retroperitoneum following a poorly aggressive course].

A 69-year-old man complaining of enlarged cervical mass, appetite loss and lower abdominal pain was found to have abdominal tumors in heaps forming a large mass around the retroperitoneum. The biopsy specimen in the cervical mass showed undifferentiated carcinoma with neuroendocrine feature. This malignancy followed a poorly aggressive course and caused death in only 24 hospital days. The disease was diagnosed as undifferentiated neuroblastoma arising in the retroperitoneum by autopsy with appropriate immunohistochemical studies. Adult neuroblastoma in the peritoneum is rare and our case showe

Pharmacologic treatment of eating disorders.

Increased research focusing on the eating disorders has put the clinician on firmer ground when choosing appropriate psychopharmacologic treatments. Recent studies of patients with bulimia demonstrate that treatment with antidepressant medications may substantially reduce symptoms of bingeing and vomiting. The efficacy of pharmacologic approaches to anorexia nervosa is more uncertain, in part because of the limited availability of long-term follow-up studies. The judicious use of appetite suppressant medications, as reviewed in the text, is helpful for mild to moderate obesity. In treating the

N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptor blockade inhibits the sensitization of sodium appetite independent of alterations in salt palatability.

The intraperitoneal injection (ip) of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist dizocilpine, MK-801, blocks sodium appetite sensitization in rats. Therefore, NMDA receptors seem important for ingestive behavioral adaptations to episodic or chronic periods of dehydration and salt depletion. Orofacial somatic motor responses to intraoral infusion of salt, in a salt taste reactivity test, can be an index of salt palatability. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether ip injection of MK-801 (0.15 mg/kg) alters orofacial responses to intraoral salt (0.3 M NaCl). In Experim

Severe obesity with hypo-leptinemia.

Some cases of obesity are thought to be associated with hypo-leptinemia. This may cause decreased appetite suppression resulting in increased appetite, leading to weight gain. Replacement therapy with leptin might be theoretically useful, but verification by reporting more cases is required. Here, we first investigated the serum leptin levels and their correlation with body mass index (BMI) in 107 patients with obesity to identify the subjects with hypo-leptinemia. Among them, one patient with congenital hypopituitarism was further investigated by comparison of his clinical and pathological ch

Association of dopamine D2 receptor and leptin receptor genes with clinically severe obesity.

OBJECTIVE: The brain reward circuits that promote drug abuse may also be involved in pleasure seeking behavior and food cravings observed in severely obese subjects. Drug addiction polymorphisms such as the TaqI A1 allele of the dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) are associated with cocaine, alcohol, and opioid use, but few studies have linked DRD2 to food craving. Other genes such as the leptin receptor gene (LEPR) and mu-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) that affect appetite and pleasure centers in the brain may also influence food addiction and obesity. The three genes together may function synergistic

The Risk of Substance Use Among Adolescents and Adults With Eating Disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are negative eating habits that have harmful mental and physical effects. EDs primarily affect young women. Most cases are diagnosed in adolescence. The most common EDs are bulimia nervosa (BN), anorexia nervosa (AN), and binge eating disorder (BED). There is a strong association between EDs and substance use disorder (SUD) in adolescence. Bulimia nervosa and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are the most common co-occurrence. There is a high behavioral association between EDs and AUD. Alcohol consumption could be a primary trigger for binge eating in women with BN. Alcohol can

Astrocytes control food intake by inhibiting AGRP neuron activity via adenosine A1 receptors.

It is well recognized that feeding behavior in mammals is orchestrated by neurons within the medial basal hypothalamus. However, it remains unclear whether food intake is also under the control of glial cells. Here, we combine chemical genetics, cell-type-specific electrophysiology, pharmacology, and feeding assays to show that stimulation of astrocytes within the medial basal hypothalamus reduces both basal- and ghrelin-evoked food intake. This occurs by a mechanism of adenosine-mediated inactivation of the orexigenic agouti-related peptide (AGRP) neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (

Kumbhakarna: Did he suffer from the disorder of the hypothalamus?

Kumbhakarna was brother of the evil Raavana in the mythological tale of Ramayana. According the legend, Kumbhakarna had an insatiable appetite and thirst and used to sleep for great lengths of time. He also had an uncontrollable temper, which was feared by many. It is our assessment that Kumbhakarna possibly suffered from hypothalamic obesity. Hypothalamic obesity can be defined as significant polyphagia and weight gain that occurs because of structural or function involvement of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus bilaterally. The characteristic features are obesity associated with p
