Sociocultural factors and local customs related to taeniasis in east Asia.

Taeniasis is an important medical and economic problem in many countries in East Asia. According to our estimation, there is an annual loss of US$18,673,495, US$13,641,021, and US$2,425,500 due to taeniasis in the mountainous areas of Taiwan, Cheju Island of Korea, and Samosir Island of Indonesia, respectively. Although taeniasis and cysticercosis due to Taenia solium have been reported, T. saginata asiatica is the dominate species in part of the world, especially in the mountainous and remote areas where the inhabitants are fond of eating raw or undercooked meat and/or viscera of domestic or …

Women and AIDS in south and South-East Asia: the challenge and the response.

South and South-East Asia are at the centre of the most aggressive advances of the AIDS epidemic today. The challenge this presents to the region is clear. While reported absolute numbers still lag behind the African region (11,160,900 in Africa; 3,081,235 in Asia) knowledgeable observers agree that the place of infection and potential devastation in this region exceed what we have seen in Africa. Those concerned with the welfare of the people of Asia, therefore, must make serious efforts to break the chain of HIV transmission as quickly and effectively as possible and identify and care for th…

[Serological data on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Southeast Asia].

Using an indirect immunofluorescent test with Hantaan 76-118 and Puumala strains as antigens, antibodies against haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome viruses were found for the first time in human in Laos and Viet-Nam and confirmed the previously published results in Thailand. These results suggest the existence of an Hantaan-related virus in these countries.

Strongyloidiasis in Allied ex-prisoners of war in south-east Asia.

One hundred and sixty ex-servicemen who had been prisoners of war in south-east Asia during 1942-5 were investigated for infection with Strongyloides stercoralis. Larvae were found in 44 (27.5%) of the men, who had therefore been infected for 34-37 years. Direct microscopy of the faeces was the most successful diagnostic method, giving a positive result in 37 cases (84%); multiple examinations were often necessary. Faecal culture was positive in 30 cases (68%), but examination of duodenal fluid obtained with the string test gave a positive result in only 17 (39%). The mean blood eosinophil cou…

We found that one in six internet-using children experienced at least one form of technology-facilitated CSEA, equivalent to over 10 million children. Despite this scale, many experiences …

Epidemiological Analysis and 2040 Projections of Atrial Fibrillation and Flutter in Asia.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation and flutter (AF/AFL) impose a substantial and growing global burden, yet comprehensive assessments focusing on Asia, accounting for regional heterogeneity, demographic drivers, and future trajectories, remain limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to systematically evaluate the burden of AF/AFL across Asia from 1990 to 2021, to quantify the contributions of demographic and epidemiological drivers, and to project future trends to inform region-specific prevention strategies. METHODS: Using Global Burden of Disease 2021 data, we analyzed prevalence, incidence, mor…

Modified Delphi Consensus Recommendations for the Management of Psoriasis in Asia-Pacific.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis imposes a substantial clinical and quality-of-life burden across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Despite advances in systemic therapies, variability in disease severity classification, assessment tools, and treatment escalation criteria continues to contribute to undertreatment and delayed access to effective care. METHODS: A modified Delphi panel was conducted to develop APAC-contextualised consensus recommendations for psoriasis management. Statements were generated from a literature review and refined through Steering Committee interviews and review. The steering co…

Serological surveillance for malaria elimination in Southeast Asia: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: As Southeast Asian countries advance toward malaria elimination, challenges such as residual transmission reservoirs and zoonotic spill-over require high-resolution micro-surveillance. While conventional diagnostics often miss hidden transmission foci in low transmission settings, serological assays provide an essential supplement by measuring both historical and recent exposure. This scoping review assesses the implementation of antibody surveillance across Southeast Asian countries and highlights its potential in the concerted effort towards regional malaria elimination. METHODS…

Cervical Cancer Elimination in Australia and the Asia Pacific: Progress and Barriers.

Australia has been at the forefront of innovation and implementation of cervical cancer control and is predicted to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035, the first country to achieve elimination using active measures. This is a result of Australia being an early adopter of universal human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and early transition to a primary HPV-based cervical screening program. However, to ensure timely and equitable elimination, disparities in coverage among underserved populations must be addressed, and recent declines in vaccination and screening uptake must be reversed. Improved

Asia's eye health challenge: unravelling the spread and solutions for conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis remains one of the most common ocular conditions affecting paediatric and adult populations globally. South and Southeast Asia have experienced unprecedented seasonal surges in conjunctivitis cases, with tens of thousands of cases occurring over short periods, particularly during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. CLASSIFICATION & PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: Conjunctivitis is classified into infectious causes (viral, bacterial, and chlamydial) and non-infectious causes (allergic, toxic, cicatricial, and immune-mediated). Viral conjunctivitis accounts for the majority of cases. A…

Impact of Social Determinants of Health on the Incidence of Tuberculosis in Central Asia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge influenced by social determinants of health (SDHs) such as poverty, overcrowding, malnutrition, and limited healthcare access. Although Central Asia (CA) has achieved progress through vaccination, screening, and treatment, the region continues to face severe disease consequences, unstable incidence patterns, and an escalating challenge of TB resistant to first-line drugs. This study aimed to analyze TB incidence dynamics in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan from 2000-2023, f…
