Assessment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Young Autistic Children.

OBJECTIVE: Co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is present for many autistic children and is associated with increased impairments, unique treatment needs, and decreased response to autism-specific interventions. Diagnosing ADHD in autistic children during the preschool and early school-age periods presents unique challenges for clinicians. METHODS: This work describes a clinically informed diagnostic framework for assessing ADHD in young autistic children. Clinical complexities are illustrated using descriptive data from caregiver and clinician ratings of ADHD symptom

Promoting Equitable Engagement in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Care.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a treatable pediatric condition, but children with racial-ethnic minority backgrounds often do not receive timely or consistent treatment. Understanding how systemic racism impacts care and learning from families of color about their experiences can provide critical insights for improving clinical practice and engaging patients equitably in ADHD care. We interweave a mother's experience navigating ADHD care for her son with commentary from an interprofessional team about what clinicians can do for families to reduce the impact of systemic raci

Endocrine Disruptors and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review.

The increasing prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children has prompted more research on both genetic and environmental risk factors, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as bisphenol A (BPA) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). This review focuses on studies published between 2013 and December 2023 that explore the potential impact of BPA and PCBs on ADHD. The review draws from databases such as WOS, PubMed, and Scopus. BPA, a chemical commonly used in plastics and resins, has raised concerns due to its potential neurodevelopmental effects, parti

Recent Trends in Medication Treatment for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis rates and stimulant use have increased recently, particularly among adults, in the context of increased telehealth use and shortages in stimulant medications. To better understand changes in ADHD medication use and inform policy governing the prescribing of these medications, this study aimed to compare stimulant and nonstimulant fills for 2019 versus 2023. METHODS: This study used national all-payer prescription claims data for 2019 (before onset of the COVID-19 pandemic) and 2023 to calculate stimulant and nonstimulant ADH

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, self-esteem and the impact of treatments.

OBJECTIVES: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience repetitive failures in their school and social life and often receive negative feedback from their environment, endangering the development of their self-esteem. Self-esteem is a forecasting factor for social, psychological, professional and familial well-being. Poor self-esteem is a risk factor for the development of depression, anxiety disorder, and personality disorder. The aim of this article is to evaluate the child's self-esteem at the initial time of ADHD diagnosis, describe self-esteem evolution after

Cortico-striatal differences in the epigenome in attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder.

While epigenetic modifications have been implicated in ADHD through studies of peripheral tissue, to date there has been no examination of the epigenome of the brain in the disorder. To address this gap, we mapped the methylome of the caudate nucleus and anterior cingulate cortex in post-mortem tissue from fifty-eight individuals with or without ADHD. While no single probe showed adjusted significance in differential methylation, several differentially methylated regions emerged. These regions implicated genes involved in developmental processes including neurogenesis and the differentiation o

Exercise Dependency and Overuse Injuries in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common condition, but current medications have limitations, pushing a drive for alternative approaches. Different exercise-focused approaches have shown promise, but concern has also been raised about individuals with ADHD showing greater risk of addiction, including exercise dependency. Using an online survey, we examined current exercise practices, including exercise dependency and the presence of overuse injury, which could result from overexercising, in 114 adults with ADHD. We found that most were regularly exercising. None were classif

New Advances in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-like Dogs.

Similar to humans, dogs could suffer an Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-like syndrome (ADHD-like). In fact, several studies highlight the use of dogs as a model for studying ADHD. This condition entails behavioral problems expressed through impulsivity, attention issues, hyperactivity, and/or aggression, compromising the quality of life for both the caregiver and the dog. The pathophysiology of ADHD-like is complex and is associated with dysregulation of various neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. The expression of ADHD-like behavior in dogs would appear to depend on a c

MicroRNAs as potential biomarkers for diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Inappropriate levels of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention characterize attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a common childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder. The cognitive function and learning ability of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are affected, and these symptoms may persist to adulthood if they are not treated. The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is only based on symptoms and objective tests for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are missing. Treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children include me

Parental perspectives on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder treatments for children.

This study investigated parental perspectives and experiences on the evaluation and treatment process associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Five hundred sixty-eight parents of youth 2-28 years-old (M = 9.37; SD = 4.11) diagnosed with ADHD responded to a 14-item online survey about their child's diagnosis and treatment. Parents reported that they had tried an average of 4.49 interventions (SD = 2.63). Parents further shared factors in treatment selection, most helpful parenting strategies, and preferences for types of treatments and treatment targets. A majority of pa

Maternal Thyroid Anomalies and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Progeny.

Previous epidemiologic investigations suggested that maternal thyroid anomalies are a possible causal factor in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in progeny, yet clinical trials indicated that levothyroxine treatment was ineffective in preventing neurodevelopmental impairments. We used an Israeli cohort of 385,542 singleton births from 1999-2012 to explore the interrelated roles of maternal thyroid conditions, laboratory gestational thyroid hormone measurements, use of thyroid medications, and offspring ADHD. Analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazards models. Results

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is characterized by a delay in subcortical maturation.

Although previous studies have found that ADHD is characterized by a delay in cortical maturation, it is not clear whether this phenomenon was secondary to developmental trajectories in subcortical regions (caudate, putamen, pallidum, thalamus, hippocampus and amygdala). Using the ADHD-200 dataset, we estimated subcortical volumes in 339 individuals with ADHD and 568 typically developing controls. We defined the growth trajectory of each subcortical structure, delineating a phase of childhood increase followed by an adolescent decrease in subcortical volumes using a quadratic growth model. Sharpened self-other distinction in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiation between self-produced tactile stimuli and touch by others is necessary for social interactions and for a coherent concept of "self". In attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD), tactile hypersensitivity and social cognition problems are part of the symptomatology, but pathophysiological mechanisms are largely unknown. Differentiation of self- and non-self- generated sensations might be key to understand and develop novel strategies for managing hypersensitivity. Here, we compared the neural signatures of affective self- and other-touch between adults with A

[Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and substance abuse. Scientific evidence].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental alteration of biological basis that started in childhood may persist during adolescence-youth and, despite what was believed until not many years ago, also in adulthood up to 50-60% of those affected, producing a significant clinical and psychosocial deterioration. In spite of being a syndrome easily identifiable by the triad: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that characterizes it, in clinical practice there are different circumstances that hinder and complicate its diagnosis and treatment. One of the most signif

Dietary factors in the etiology and therapy of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this study is to discuss the role of dietary factors in the etiology and therapy of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Relevant literature published from January 2016 to January 2017 was included in this review. RECENT FINDINGS: Unhealthy prenatal diet may be associated with ADHD in the offspring through an increase in epigenetic changes. The few-foods diet may have some efficacy, but requires further investigation before firm conclusions can be drawn. The efficacy of the supplementation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the therapy of ADHD is p
