Outcomes of Voice Therapy in Behavioral Voice Disorders: A Scoping Review-Part A.

OBJECTIVE: To map the outcome assessment instruments and procedures used to determine the effect of voice therapy in adults with behavioral voice disorders. METHODS: This scoping review was registered in the Open Science Framework (doi: 10.17605/OSF.IO/YDGA8). The guiding research question was: "What outcomes are used to assess the effects of voice therapy in adults with behavioral voice disorders?" Searches were conducted across bibliographic databases and gray literature sources and through backward and forward citation tracking. Studies involving adults with behavioral voice disorders unde

Impact of brain overgrowth on sensorial learning processing during the first year of life.

Macrocephaly is present in about 2-5% of the general population. It can be found as an isolated benign trait or as part of a syndromic condition. Brain overgrowth has been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism during the first year of life, however, evidence remains inconclusive. Furthermore, most of the studies have involved pathological or high-risk populations, but little is known about the effects of brain overgrowth on neurodevelopment in otherwise neurotypical infants. We investigated the impact of brain overgrowth on basic perceptual learning processes (repetition

Posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation in post-adenoidectomy velopharyngeal insufficiency.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation using septal or conchal cartilages with other bulks-according to the persistent gap and the individual anatomy of each patient-in improving velopharyngeal function in patients who acquired persistent velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) post-adenoidectomy. METHODS: Observational descriptive prospective case series of 24 patients (their ages ranged between 3 and 26 years) who developed persistent VPI post-adenoidectomy (more than 3 months) although they had normal speech resonance before adenoidectomy. RESULTS: The presen

Comparison of Two Versions of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index for Quantification of Dysphonia Severity.

OBJECTIVES: The acoustic voice quality index (AVQI) is a specific acoustic indicator designed to objectively estimate dysphonia severity and measure the values of acoustic parameters based on the diagnostic category. This study compared the performance of two AVQI versions (2.02 and 3.01, v2 and v3) and PraatCPPS using a voice sample of Korean population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Voice samples for sustained vowel and connected speech were elicited from 2257 patients across 14 diagnostic categories. Auditory-perceptual (A-P) assessments of dysphonia severity were compared to acoustic parameters

Dissociation of tone merger and congenital amusia in Hong Kong Cantonese.

While the issue of individual variation has been widely studied in second language learning or processing, it is less well understood how perceptual and musical aptitude differences can explain individual variation in native speech processing. In the current study, we make use of tone merger in Hong Kong Cantonese, an ongoing sound change that concerns the merging of tones in perception, production or both in a portion of native speakers, to examine the possible relationship between tone merger and musical and pitch abilities. Although a previous study has reported the occurrence of tone merge

Quantifying the resolution of spatial and temporal representation in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Our ability to generate mental representation of magnitude from sensory information affects how we perceive and experience the world. Reduced resolution of the mental representations formed from sensory inputs may generate impairment in the proximal and distal information processes that utilize these representations. Impairment of spatial and temporal information processing likely underpins the non-verbal cognitive impairments observed in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). The present study builds on prior research by seeking to quantify the resolution of spatial and temporal rep

Voice Therapy for Benign Voice Disorders in the Elderly: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Telepractice and Conventional Face-to-Face Therapy.

Purpose Previous studies have reported that voice therapy via telepractice is useful for patients with nodules and muscle tension dysphonia. Nevertheless, telepractice for elderly patients with voice disorders has not yet been investigated. We conducted this study to examine the hypothesis that voice therapy via telepractice is not inferior to conventional voice therapy. Method Eighty patients with dysphonia aged more than 55 years participated in this study from September 2016 to June 2018. After screening the inclusion and the exclusion criteria, 69 patients were randomized into telepractice

Characteristics and professional use of voice in street children in Aracaju, Brazil.

The objective of the study was to evaluate voice characteristics of children engaged in street selling, which involves an essentially professional use of voice in this population. A controlled cross-sectional study was carried out. A randomly chosen sample of 200 school children with a history of street selling assisted by public social services and 400 school children without this experience was selected. Seven- to 10-year-old children of both sexes were studied. Both groups were interviewed and given vocal assessment (auditory-perceptual assessment and spectrographic acoustic measures) and o

Steady state responses: electrophysiological assessment of sensory function in schizophrenia.

Persons with schizophrenia experience subjective sensory anomalies and objective deficits on assessment of sensory function. Such deficits could be produced by abnormal signaling in the sensory pathways and sensory cortex or later stage disturbances in cognitive processing of such inputs. Steady state responses (SSRs) provide a noninvasive method to test the integrity of sensory pathways and oscillatory responses in schizophrenia with minimal task demands. SSRs are electrophysiological responses entrained to the frequency and phase of a periodic stimulus. Patients with schizophrenia exhibit pr

Temporal dissociation of early lexical access and articulation using a delayed naming task--an FMRI study.

Neuroimaging studies of overt speech hold an important practical advantage allowing monitoring of subject performance, particularly valuable in disorders like aphasia. However, speech production is not a monotonic process but a complex sequence of stages. Levelt and colleagues have described these as roughly corresponding to two originally independent systems--conceptual and sensorimotor--that are linked in the formulation and expression of spoken language. In the initial stages a word is chosen to match a concept (lexical selection); in the later stages the sound and motor patterns are encode

Hearing and Auditory Processing Abilities in Primary School Children with Learning Difficulties.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate hearing and auditory processing ability in primary school children with learning difficulties (LD). DESIGN: A nonrandomized, cross-sectional single measure research design was used. A total of 486 children, aged 7.7 to 10.8 years and attending years 3 and 4 in six primary schools, were classified as having an LD (n = 67) or being typically developing (TD, n = 419). This classification was based on a Learning Score generated from their school report results and National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy scores. All children attempted a conve

Prenatal exposure to antiepileptic drugs and early processing of emotionally relevant sounds.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is associated with developmental compromises in verbal intelligence and social skills in childhood. Our aim was to evaluate whether a multifeature Mismatch Negativity (MMN) paradigm assessing semantic and emotional components of linguistic and emotional processing would be useful to detect possible alterations in early auditory processing of newborns with prenatal AED exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data on AED exposure, pregnancy outcome, neuropsychological evaluation of the mothers, information on maternal epilepsy type, and a st

A case of pure word deafness associated with Landau-Kleffner syndrome: a long-term study of auditory disturbance.

A long-term study of auditory disturbance of a female case who had suffered from pure word deafness associated with Landau-Kleffner syndrome was reported. The patient developed this syndrome at age 4, and we continued the follow-up until she reached 20. The following became clear after the investigation: (1) even by the age of 20 her auditory defect had not improved significantly; (2) from an early stage she could not identify either vowels or consonant-vowel syllables; (3) later she had no difficulty identifying vowels, but her consonant-discrimination score hardly improved; and (4) her probl

[Sequential information processing in children with and without auditory processing disorder].

BACKGROUND: It is a controversial issue whether sequential processing in children with auditory processing disorders (APD) is a unimodal auditory impairment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Normal achieving controls (n=12; mean age: 101.1 months; SD 20.3) and children referred to clinical facilities for assessment including children with monosymptomatic APD (n=25; mean age: 90.8 months; SD 9.8), children with developmental language disorder (DLD]) + APD (n=11; mean age: 89.5 months; SD 14.9), children with dyslexia + APD (n=10; mean age: 113.8 months; SD 17.1) were compared using the subtest digit reca

Attentive and preattentive processing in narcolepsy as revealed by event-related potentials (ERPs).

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder, characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep attacks, cataplexy and abnormal manifestations of rapid eye movement sleep. Recent studies suggest that neuropsychological impairments in narcolepsy may include memory and attention deficits due to a monoaminergic or cholinergic transmitter dysfunction. To explore the nature of cognitive problems, the P300 and mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related potentials were investigated in narcoleptic patients and matched controls. Narcoleptics showed significantly increased P300 amplitudes relative to controls,

Perceptual discrimination of speech sounds in developmental dyslexia.

Experiments previously reported in the literature suggest that people with dyslexia have a deficit in categorical perception. However, it is still unclear whether the deficit is specific to the perception of speech sounds or whether it more generally affects auditory function. In order to investigate the relationship between categorical perception and dyslexia, as well as the nature of this categorization deficit, speech specific or not, the discrimination responses of children who have dyslexia and those of average readers to sinewave analogues of speech sounds were compared. These analogues

Discriminability of vowel representations in cat auditory-nerve fibers after acoustic trauma.

This paper attempts to connect deficits seen in the neural representation of speech with perceptual deficits. Responses of auditory-nerve fibers were studied in cats exposed to acoustic trauma. Four synthetic steady-state vowels were used as test signals; these stimuli are identical, except that the second format (F2) resonator in the synthesizer was set to 1.4, 1.5, 1.7, or 2 kHz, producing four spectra that differ mainly in the vicinity of the F2 frequency. These stimuli were presented to a large population (523) of auditory-nerve fibers in four cats with sloping high-frequency threshold shi

The Sensory Gating Inventory-Brief.

The Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI) is a 36-item measure used to assess an individual's subjective ability to modulate, filter, over-include, discriminate, attend to, and tolerate sensory stimuli. Due to its theoretical and empirical link with sensory processing deficits, this measure has been used extensively in studies of psychosis and other psychopathology. The current work fills a need within the field for a briefer measure of sensory gating aberrations that maintains the original measure's utility. For this purpose, large samples (total n = 1552) were recruited from 2 independent sites for

The effect of speaking task on perceptual judgment of the severity of dysphonic voice.

This study investigated the effect of speaking task on auditory-perceptual judgment of the severity of dysphonia. Three speech-language pathologists experienced in evaluating of disordered voices rated 29 recorded speakers, each of whom produced speech elicited via the same three tasks: sustained vowel /a/, oral reading of a standard passage, and connected speech describing a standard picture. Stimuli were played in sound field, and raters used direct magnitude estimation with a visual analog scale. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a statistically significant (P < .05)

The relationship between form and function level receptive prosodic abilities in autism.

Prosody can be conceived as having form (auditory-perceptual characteristics) and function (pragmatic/linguistic meaning). No known studies have examined the relationship between form- and function-level prosodic skills in relation to the effects of stimulus length and/or complexity upon such abilities in autism. Research in this area is both insubstantial and inconclusive. Children with autism and controls completed the receptive tasks of the Profiling Elements of Prosodic Systems in Children (PEPS-C) test, which examines both form- and function-level skills, and a sentence-level task assessi
