Reduction of long COVID symptoms after stellate ganglion block: A retrospective chart review study.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has left millions of individuals with a host of post-viral symptoms that can be debilitating and persist indefinitely. To date there are no definitive tests or treatments for the collection of symptoms known as "Long COVID" or Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). Following our initial case report detailing improvement of Long COVID symptoms after sequential bilateral stellate ganglion blockade (SGB), we performed a retrospective chart analysis study on individuals treated with the same protocol over the course of six months (2021-2022) in our clinic. Patients self-re

Inferior mesenteric plexus block under computed tomography guidance: A case report.

RATIONALE: Inferior mesenteric plexus block is indicated for left-sided lower abdominal pain. However, in patients with terminal cancer, severe abdominal pain can prevent the patient from maintaining the necessary posture during the procedure, and considerable anatomic deformation owing to extensive growth, invasion, and metastasis of the tumor in the abdominal cavity can make the procedure difficult. In these cases, performing the procedures under computed tomography (CT) guidance can ensure greater safety and accuracy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old man was referred for severe left-sided l

Effects of Stellate Ganglion Block on Healing of Fractures Induced in Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Sympathetic blocks are used as an adjunct for pain management in the treatment of orthopedic and traumatic conditions. Stellate ganglion (ganglion stellatum) provides sympathetic innervation of the head, neck and cervicothoracic regions, and upper extremities. No study was found in the literature investigating the effects of stellate ganglion block performed in the upper extremity, on blood supply to bone, density, vascularization, and bone metabolism. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of stellate ganglion block on healing of closed forearm fractu

Stellate ganglion blockade and bilateral cardiac sympathetic denervation in patients with life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias.

Autonomic modulation is being increasingly employed as a strategy to treat ventricular arrhythmias refractory to beta-blockers, antiarrhythmic drugs, and catheter-based ablation procedures. We report 6 patients with refractory ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) treated with stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) and/or bilateral cardiac sympathetic denervation (CSD). Our case series emphasizes the concept that the cardiac sympathetic nerves are important targets in the management of ventricular arrhythmias. SGB and CSD can be effective in suppressing VT/VF and can be offer

Stellate ganglion blockade-techniques and modalities.

Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is utilized in the diagnosis and management of various vascular disorders and sympathetically mediated pain in upper extremity, head and neck. The stellate ganglion lies medial to the scalene muscles, lateral to longus coli muscle, esophagus, trachea and recurrent laryngeal nerve, anterior to C7 transverse process and prevertebral fascia, superior to the subclavian artery and posterior to vertebral vessels. Consequently, inadvertent placement of the needle tip into these soft tissues and vessels occur with blind technique. Henceforth, various interventional modali

Microcirculatory changes identified by photoacoustic microscopy in patients with complex regional pain syndrome type I after stellate ganglion blocks.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain syndrome that causes intractable pain, disability, and poor quality of life for patients. The etiology and pathophysiology of CRPS are still poorly understood. Due to a lack of proper diagnostic tools, the prognosis of CRPS is primarily based on clinical observation. The objective of this work is to evaluate a new imaging modality, photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), for assisting diagnoses and monitoring the progress and treatment outcome of CRPS. Blood vasculature and oxygen saturation (sO₂) were imaged by PAM from eight adult patients with

CT-guided celiac plexus neurolysis: a review of anatomy, indications, technique, and tips for successful treatment.

The celiac plexus is the largest visceral plexus and is located deep in the retroperitoneum, over the anterolateral surface of the aorta and around the origin of the celiac trunk. It serves as a relay center for nociceptive impulses that originate from the upper abdominal viscera, from the stomach to the proximal transverse colon. Celiac plexus neurolysis, with agents such as ethanol, is an effective means of diminishing pain that arises from these structures. Percutaneous imaging-guided celiac plexus neurolysis has been established as an invaluable therapeutic option in the management of intr

Comparison of compensatory sweating and quality of life following thoracic sympathetic block for palmar hyperhidrosis: electrocautery hook versus titanium clip.

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracic sympathetic block is an effective, safe, and minimally invasive method for treatment of primary hyperhidrosis. The purpose of this study was to decide which one of using electrocautery hook and titanium clip is the appropriate procedure for primary palmar hyperhidrosis by assessing the compensatory sweating (CS) and quality of life (QOL) of patients after sympathetic block. METHODS: Between October 2007 to August 2010, 120 patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis were randomly divided into two groups, electrocautery hook group (60 patients) and titanium c

Lower extremity complex regional pain syndrome type II after a craniotomy: case report.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a collection of signs and symptoms that most often include regional pain, edema, changes in skin temperature, increased skin sensitivity, and weakness that usually affects the extremities. It almost always exclusively affects the surgical site. A 52 year old woman presented with lower extremity CRPS due to positioning after a craniotomy.

Unexplained apnoea and loss of consciousness during sub arachnoid block for caesarean section.

Sub arachnoid block (SAB) is often perceived safe by many anesthesiologists and other faculties but is also not completely safe choice especially in pregnant females, as the incidence of complications and local anaesthetic agent toxicity is high in these groups of patients. Here we present four such cases out of the seventeen patients over a period of six months, who developed apnea and transient loss of consciousness after spinal anesthesia for lower segment caesarean section. Typically all these patients after spinal anesthesia developed difficulty in breathing, became apnoea and had loss of

[Treatment of reflex dystrophy with continuous peripheral nerve block].

Physiotherapy is an important part of the treatment of reflex dystrophy or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)-type I, but this treatment is very painful. We report two cases of reflex dystrophy: a child with recurrent episodes and an adult. Both patients were treated with continuous peripheral nerve block in addition to physiotherapy. The method allows complete pain relief. At follow up (at 2 and 5 months) the results were excellent. By decreasing pain and thereby improving the ability to tolerate physical therapy, this method may have an advantage compared to other treatment modalities.

New aspects in performing interventional techniques for chronic pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We will evaluate the usefulness of the new intrathecal analgesic ziconotide in palliative care medicine. We will also examine the place and efficacy of neurolytic celiac plexus blockade in patients suffering from malignancy in the upper abdomen, after introducing better localization methods of the celiac plexus. RECENT FINDINGS: The analgesic effects of intrathecally administered ziconotide have been studied in patients suffering from pain due to AIDS or cancer. The results show a moderate to complete pain relief, significantly better than in placebo groups. However, safety

[Blockade of ganglion impar through sacrococcygeal junction for cancer-related pelvic pain].

Impar ganglion block provides pain relief in patients who suffer from sympathetically mediated pain arising from disorders of viscera and somatic structures within the pelvis and perineum. We performed impar ganglion blockade through sacrococcygeal junction instead of anococcygeal ligament in 9 patients who had localized perineal pain of visceral origin. All the blocks which were performed through sacrococcygeal junction without bending the needle under fluoroscopic guidance were easy to perform without any complication. Pain intensity by Visual Analogue Scale, daily opioid requirements, and c

Sympathetic blockade for the relief of chronic pain.

The sympathetic blocks are useful in many ways for relief of chronic pain. The sympathetic block can be caused at pre- and paravertebral sympathetic ganglia eg, stellate ganglia, coeliac plexus and lumbar sympathetic ganglia. Indications for sympathetic blockade are: Complex regional pain syndrome, phantom limb pain, central pain, acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and cancer pain from upper abdominal viscera. Stellate ganglion blockade is required for the diagnosis, prognosis and therapy for painful and other conditions associated with sympathetic dysfunctions of head, neck and upper extre

Sphenopalatine ganglion block for treatment of sinus arrest in postherpetic neuralgia.

A 64-year-old woman presented with bradycardia from sinus pauses during exacerbations of postherpetic trigeminal distribution neuralgia. She had underlying systemic lupus erythematosus. Sphenopalatine ganglion blockade was employed to treat her pain. The episodes of bradycardia resolved with successful alleviation of pain. This report emphasizes that a sphenopalatine ganglion blockade can be employed in the treatment and prevention of sinus arrest associated with postherpetic trigeminal distribution neuralgia.

[The use of moderate neurovegetative adrenergic inhibition together with anticoagulants in patients with acute cholecystitis].

The studies have been performed in 178 patients during and after surgery on the biliary ducts. The patients developed marked hyper-reaction of the sympathoadrenal system, total and regional hemodynamic disturbances, hypoxia, disorders in redox processes and blood viscosity and hypercoagulation. To prevent and eliminate the disorders observed small doses of ganglioblockers, alpha- and beta-blockers in combination with heparin were used during surgery and in the earliest postoperative period. As a result hyper-reaction of the sympathoadrenal system was considerably reduced, total and regional he

The interaction of vasodilating drugs and sympathetic blockade in normal and ischemic canine hindlimbs.

The purpose of this study was to determine if intraarterial vasodilating drugs could augment the vasodilation produced by sympathetic blockade, such as occurs during epidural anesthesia. Papaverine (2 mg/min), nitroglycerin (1 microgram/kg/min), aand saline were infused into the femoral artery before and after lumbar sympathectomy in six arterially isolated canine hindlimbs. Femoral blood flow was controlled with a perfusion circuit at baseline (80 ml/min), half-baseline (40 ml/min), and low (5 ml/min) flow rates so that hindlimb mean arterial pressure served as an index of peripheral vasodila

Use of prolonged sympathetic blockade as an adjunct to surgery in the patient with sympathetic maintained pain.

Twenty patients with sympathetic maintained pain (SMP) underwent surgery to treat an associated nerve injury. In each patient, an axillary catheter technique was used to maintain anesthesia and sympatholysis for up to 4 days following surgery. In no instance was the SMP exacerbated by the operation. The use of prolonged sympathetic blockade as an adjunct increases the margin of safety in surgery for these patients when nonoperative measures cannot relieve the pain or restore function.

Effects of lumbar sympathetic block on kidney function in cirrhotic patients with hepatorenal syndrome.

We studied the effects of unilateral lumbar sympathetic block on kidney function in eight patients with cirrhosis and hepatorenal syndrome. In five patients with basal glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 25 ml/min, sympathetic block induced a significant increase in GFR, osmolal clearance, urinary sodium excretion, fractional excretion of filtered sodium (FENa) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and a decrease in plasma renin activity. In the three patients with basal GFR greater than 25 ml/min, sympathetic block produced no significant change in renal function. We conclude that sympath
