Pilot mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: prevalence rates from semi-structured interviews, and associated vulnerability and protective factors.

INTRODUCTION: Pilots are a unique occupational group who perform a specialised job and face significant stressors. Pilot mental health has received increased attention since Germanwings Flight 9525; however, this research has largely focused on general anxiety, depression, and suicide and relied on a questionnaire-based methodology. This approach is likely to miss various mental health issues that may affect pilot wellbeing, leaving the prevalence of mental health issues in aviation unclear. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have a particular impact on the mental health and wellb…

Patent foramen ovale: a review of associated conditions and the impact of physiological size.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is implicated in platypnea-orthodeoxia, stroke and decompression sickness (DCS) in divers and astronauts. However, PFO size in relation to clinical illness is largely unknown since few studies evaluate PFO, either functionally or anatomically. The autopsy incidence of PFO is approximately 27% and 6% for a large defect (0.6 cm to 1.0 cm). A PFO is often associated with atrial septal aneurysm and Chiari network, although these anatomic variations are uncommon. Methodologies for diagnosis and anatomic and functional sizing of a PFO include transthoracic echocardiography

Comparing Haptic Cues for Operator Guidance Towards a Target Input with a One-Dimensional Active Lever.

As automation capabilities advance, human-machine collaboration increasingly involves systems providing guidance to operators during control tasks. Such guidance combines the precision of automated systems with human oversight, keeping operators in the control loop. In safety-critical domains such as aviation, they must follow prescribed inputs while monitoring their environment. In these cases, providing guidance through the visual channel may interfere with monitoring, potentially compromising operational safety, making alternative modalities preferable. This makes haptic feedback a promisin…

Development and validation of an AI-driven blood glucose prediction system for pilots based on continuous glucose monitoring.

During flight, pilots are exposed to unique environmental factors such as low air pressure, acceleration, and psychological stress, which ca … physical activity levels, were simultaneously collected to establish a scenario-specific dataset in aviation. A multimodal transformer model was developed to predict future blood glucose levels at 15, 30, and 60 min, and its performance was compared with baseline models such as linear extrapolation, long short-term memory (LSTM), and gated recurrent unit ( …

Estimating CO2 emissions due to present and future suborbital space tourism industry.

Estimating and predicting CO2 emissions are the keys to achieving the overall greenhouse gas emission goals for 2030 and 2050. Recent surges … uborbital tourism releases 400-1,000 times more CO2 per passenger per hour compared with commercial aviation flights. The spacecraft using liquid hydrogen as fuel releases nearly the least amount of CO2; however, it is still associated with 90-106 metric tons of indirect CO2 emissions due to the fuel production process. In contrast, spacecraft using kerose …

Corn stover variability drives differences in bisabolene production by engineered Rhodotorula toruloides.

UNLABELLED: Microbial conversion of lignocellulosic biomass represents an alternative route for production of biofuels and bioproducts. While researchers have mostly focused on engineering strains such as Rhodotorula toruloides for better bisabolene production as a sustainable aviation fuel, less is known about the impact of the feedstock heterogeneity on bisabolene production. Critical material attributes like feedstock composition, nutritional content, and inhibitory compounds can all influence bioconversion. Further, the given feedstocks can have a marked influence on selection of suitable …

The effect of aircraft cockpit rudder pedal shape on lower limb muscle activation, plantar pressure, and comfort.

This study investigated the effects of four cockpit rudder-pedal geometries on lower-limb muscle activation, plantar-pressure distribution, and perceived comfort during simulated civil-aviation flight tasks. Employing a within-participant design in a simulator configured to the COMAC C919 cockpit layout, these configurations were assessed using 30 male trainee pilots. Results showed that the forefoot-elevated configuration (Shape-3) reduced calf-muscle loading and redistributed plantar pressure while improving overall comfort; conversely, thigh-muscle activation was not significantly affected …

Burn injuries from small airplane crashes.

Because a large amount of general aviation activity occurs in Central Florida, we reviewed our admissions for victims of small airplane crashes. We identified 13 burn victims of small aircraft accidents over a 7-year period. Of the 13, 12 survived their burn injuries, an overall survival rate of 92%. The extent of burn injury, Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI), complications, other injuries and rehabilitation potential are reviewed. Burn injury resulting from small airplane crashes is usually survivable if the patient arrives at the Burn Center alive. These burn victims generally are high…

Civilian air travel and the otolaryngologist.

Thousands of individuals fly commercial airlines and private aircraft daily. One airline boasts of serving more than 100,000 passengers each day. Of these individuals exposed to barometric alterations, an undocumented number will develop significant barotrauma and may seek help from an otolaryngologist. Although many otolaryngologists learn the mechanics and management of barotrauma as military flight surgeons, residents in otolaryngology usually receive no specific training in this area. Because private and commercial aviation are so common today, we believe that a basic knowledge of barometr…

Cataracts and avionic radiations.

Nine cases of hertzian radiation cataracts are reported among personnel working in operational aviation environments, where they were irradiated repeatedly at subliminal non-thermal field intensities. The resultant ocular pathology evolved insidiously and slowly over a period of years in a similar way to other forms of radiational injury. By the time of consultation examination, all had progressed to a relatively late state, exhibiting not only capsular cataract but also vesiculation and opacification of the proximal subcapsular lens substance. In addition to the ocular dangers of chronic expo…

Toward a neuroergonomic understanding of spatial disorientation.

Despite decades of research, spatial disorientation, which is the incorrect perception of one's orientation relative to gravity, remains one of the leading causes of aviation mishaps. In this mini-review, we highlight the role of the vestibular system towards generating disorientation. Specifically, in the absence of other cues, the brain is incapable of distinguishing between the acceleration caused by a static force such as gravity from that experienced in an accelerating vehicle, which leads to an ambiguity leading to acceleration being wrongly interpreted as tilts. Finally, because vestibu…

Occupational color vision standards: new prospects.

Occupational color vision standards in transport have been implemented for 100 years. A review of these standards has taken place early this century prompted by antidiscrimination laws in the workplace and several transport accidents. The Australian and Canadian Railways have developed new lanterns to address their occupational medical requirements. The Civil Aviation Authority in the UK has adopted the Color Assessment and Diagnosis (CAD) test as the standard for assessing color vision for professional flight crews. The methodology employed using the CAD test ensures that color deficient pilo…

Comparative retrospective study of injuries during military parachuting training and airborne operations from 2013 to 2020.

INTRODUCTION: French paratroopers have been deployed during airborne operations for nearly a century. Parachute operations have increased since the start of Operations Serval and Barkhane in the Sahelo-Saharan strip. These military operations allow paratroopers to be dropped behind enemy lines. Our primary objective was to compare injuries sustained during airborne operations and training. Our secondary objective was to compare serious injuries sustained during airborne operations and training. METHODS: We conducted a multicentric comparative retrospective study of military parachuting injuri

The Black Hole Approach and The Italian Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation poses a significant hazard to aviators, particularly during low-visibility conditions, such as nocturnal operations or adverse weather scenarios. Visual illusions, exacerbated by the absence of external references, can mislead pilots into incorrect judgments of aircraft orientation, potentially resulting in catastrophic consequences. Perrone's black hole approach theory describes how lateral reference loss distorts perceived approach angles during landing. METHODS: This study systematically assessed black hole approach risk at 119 Italian civil and militar

Factors affecting ejection risk in rollover crashes.

Ejection greatly increases the risk of injury and fatality in a rollover crash. The purpose of this study was to determine the crash, vehicle, and occupant characteristics that affect the risk of ejection in rollovers. Information from real world rollover crashes occurring from 2000 - 2010 was obtained from the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) in order to analyze the effect of the following parameters on ejection risk: seatbelt use, rollover severity, vehicle type, seating position, roof crush, side curtain airbag deployment, glazing type, and occupant age, gender, and size. Seatbelt
