Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) preparations for prophylaxis of postoperative nausea and vomiting: A Bayesian network meta-analysis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ginger has been proposed for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), however it remains equivocal whether ginger can be an alternative option and which certain preparation is optimal for PONV prophylaxis. AIM OF THE STUDY: We conducted a network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare and rank relative efficacy for PONV control among all available ginger preparations collected in the databases. METHODS: Eligible records were identified by retrieving Medline (via Pubmed), Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, CNKI, WHO ICTRP and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomi

Topotecan clearance based on a single sample and a population pharmacokinetic model: Application to a pediatric high-risk neuroblastoma clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Topotecan, an antitumor drug with systemic exposure (SE)-dependent activity against many pediatric tumors has wide interpatient pharmacokinetic variability, making it challenging to attain the desired topotecan SE. The study objectives were to update our topotecan population pharmacokinetic model, to evaluate the feasibility of determining individual topotecan clearance using a single blood sample, and to apply this approach to topotecan data from a neuroblastoma trial to explore exposure-response relationships. PROCEDURE: Our previous population pharmacokinetic and covariate mode

The effect of individual characteristics on susceptibility to aggressive and/or intimidating approaches: quantifying probability pathways by creating a victimization model.

Background: A significant body of literature has identified multiple factors that contribute to established victimization by aggressive and/or intimidating behaviours. These studies primarily originate from the fields of intimate partner violence (IPV), bullying, sexual abuse, and/or commercial sexual exploitation (CSE), and generally focus on female victims. It appears, however, complicated to quantify the cumulative contribution of these factors on susceptibility to intimidating and/or hostile engagements on an individual level. Objective: To develop a comprehensive risk model to quantify, on

Use of a common spreadsheet program to demonstrate the ability of Bayesian forecasting to estimate the pharmacokinetic parameters of antibiotics.

OBJECTIVES: Recent guidelines for vancomycin have incorporated the use of Bayesian forecasting, reinforcing the need to inform students in pharmacy and clinical pharmacology of its use in therapeutic drug monitoring. The goal was to devise a PharmD research project that could demonstrate to students through simulation and data generation the utility of the Bayesian approach in estimating the pharmacokinetics of gentamicin and vancomycin. METHODS: A series of steps were devised using Microsoft Excel to simulate patient data based on study-derived means and variances, pharmacokinetic modelling,

Comparison of the modified piggyback with standard piggyback and conventional orthotopic liver transplantation techniques: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In conventional orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), the recipient's retrohepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) is completely clamped and replaced with the donor IVC. The piggyback technique has been used to preserve venous return, either via an end-to-side or standard piggyback (SPB), or via a side-to-side or modified piggyback (MPB) anastomosis, using a venous cuff from the recipient hepatic veins with partially clamping and preserves the recipient's inferior vena cava. However, whether these piggyback techniques improve the efficacy of OLT is unclear. To address the low quality of

Investigating the impact of condomless vaginal intercourse and lubricant use on the vaginal metabolome: a pre-post observational study.

OBJECTIVE: The vaginal metabolome is a significant factor in the vaginal microenvironment, and data are emerging on its independent role in urogenital health. Condomless vaginal intercourse and personal lubricant use are common practices that may affect the vaginal metabolome. The aim of the present study is to describe the associations between condomless intercourse and lubricant use on the vaginal metabolome. METHODS: This study used archived mid-vaginal swabs from a 10-week observational cohort of reproductive age women who self-collected samples and recorded behavioural diaries daily. Cas

A link between mitochondrial damage and the immune microenvironment of delayed onset muscle soreness.

BACKGROUND: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a self-healing muscle pain disorder. Inflammatory pain is the main feature of DOMS. More and more researchers have realized that changes in mitochondrial morphology are related to pain. However, the role of mitochondria in the pathogenesis of DOMS and the abnormal immune microenvironment is still unknown. METHODS: Mitochondria-related genes and gene expression data were obtained from MitoCarta3.0 and NCBI GEO databases. The network of mitochondrial function and the immune microenvironment of DOMS was constructed by computer algorithm. Subseq

Establishing a standard method for analysing case detection delay in leprosy using a Bayesian modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and remains a source of preventable disability if left undetected. Case detection delay is an important epidemiological indicator for progress in interrupting transmission and preventing disability in a community. However, no standard method exists to effectively analyse and interpret this type of data. In this study, we aim to evaluate the characteristics of leprosy case detection delay data and select an appropriate model for the variability of detection delays based on the best fitting distribution type. METHODS: T

Examining the latent structure and correlates of sensory reactivity in autism: a multi-site integrative data analysis by the autism sensory research consortium.

BACKGROUND: Differences in responding to sensory stimuli, including sensory hyperreactivity (HYPER), hyporeactivity (HYPO), and sensory seeking (SEEK) have been observed in autistic individuals across sensory modalities, but few studies have examined the structure of these "supra-modal" traits in the autistic population. METHODS: Leveraging a combined sample of 3868 autistic youth drawn from 12 distinct data sources (ages 3-18 years and representing the full range of cognitive ability), the current study used modern psychometric and meta-analytic techniques to interrogate the latent structure

Opioid analgesic effects on subjective well-being in the operating theatre.

Exposure to opioid analgesics due to surgery increases the risk of new persistent opioid use. A mechanistic hypothesis for opioids' abuse liability rests on the belief that, in addition to pain relief, acute opioid treatment improves well-being (e.g. via euphoria) and relieves anxiety. However, opioids do not consistently improve mood in laboratory studies of healthy non-opioid users. This observational study determined how two commonly used opioid analgesics affected patients' subjective well-being in standard clinical practice. Day surgery patients rated how good and how anxious they felt be

Seizure duration predicts postictal electroencephalographic recovery after electroconvulsive therapy-induced seizures.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to provide a quantitative description of the relation between seizure duration and the postictal state using features extracted from the postictal electroencephalogram (EEG). METHODS: Thirty patients with major depressive disorder treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) were studied with continuous EEG before, during, and after ECT-induced seizures. EEG recovery was quantified as the spectral difference between postictal and baseline EEG using the temporal brain symmetry index (BSI). The postictal temporal EEG evolution was modeled with a single exponential. The paramet

Geographic Structuring and Divergence Time Frame of Monkeypox Virus in the Endemic Region.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox is an emerging zoonosis endemic to Central and West Africa. Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is genetically structured in 2 major clades (clades 1 and 2/3), but its evolution is poorly explored. METHODS: We retrieved MPXV genomes from public repositories and we analyzed geographic patterns using STRUCTURE. Molecular dating was performed using a using a Bayesian approach. RESULTS: We show that the population transmitted in West Africa (clades 2/3) experienced limited drift. Conversely, clade 1 (transmitted in the Congo Basin) possibly underwent a bottleneck or founder effect. Depe

A decision support tool for risk-benefit analysis of Japanese encephalitis vaccine in travellers.

BACKGROUND: During pre-travel consultations, clinicians and travellers face the challenge of weighing the risks verus benefits of Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccination due to the high cost of the vaccine, low incidence in travellers (~1 in 1 million), but potentially severe consequences (~30% case-fatality rate). Personalised JE risk assessment based on the travellers' demographics and travel itinerary is challenging using standard risk matrices. We developed an interactive digital tool to estimate risks of JE infection and severe health outcomes under different scenarios to facilitate shared

Estimating national-level measles case-fatality ratios in low-income and middle-income countries: an updated systematic review and modelling study.

BACKGROUND: To understand the current measles mortality burden, and to mitigate the future burden, it is crucial to have robust estimates of measles case fatalities. Estimates of measles case-fatality ratios (CFRs) that are specific to age, location, and time are essential to capture variations in underlying population-level factors, such as vaccination coverage and measles incidence, which contribute to increases or decreases in CFRs. In this study, we updated estimates of measles CFRs by expanding upon previous systematic reviews and implementing a meta-regression model. Our objective was to

Metagenomic sequencing, molecular characterization, and Bayesian phylogenetics of imported type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus, Spain, 2021.

INTRODUCTION: In 2021, a type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV2) was isolated from the stool of a patient with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) admitted to Spain from Senegal. A virological investigation was conducted to characterize and trace the origin of VDPV2. METHODS: We used an unbiased metagenomic approach for the whole-genome sequencing of VDPV2 from the stool (pre-treated with chloroform) and from the poliovirus-positive supernatant. Phylogenetic analyses and molecular epidemiological analyses relying on the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo methodology were used to determine the geog

Associations of water, sanitation, and hygiene with typhoid fever in case-control studies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) play a pivotal role in controlling typhoid fever, as it is primarily transmitted through oral-fecal pathways. Given our constrained resources, staying current with the most recent research is crucial. This ensures we remain informed about practical insights regarding effective typhoid fever control strategies across various WASH components. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies to estimate the associations of water, sanitation, and hygiene exposures with typhoid fever. METHODS: We updated the previous revie

Spatio-temporal pattern and associate factors of intestinal infectious diseases in Zhejiang Province, China, 2008-2021: a Bayesian modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in sanitation status and public health awareness, intestinal infectious diseases (IID) have caused a serious disease burden in China. Little was known about the spatio-temporal pattern of IID at the county level in Zhejiang. Therefore, a spatio-temporal modelling study to identify high-risk regions of IID incidence and potential risk factors was conducted. METHODS: Reported cases of notifiable IID from 2008 to 2021 were obtained from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by decreased Pavlovian influence on instrumental behavior.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by uncontrollable repetitive actions thought to rely on abnormalities within fundamental instrumental learning systems. We investigated cognitive and computational mechanisms underlying Pavlovian biases on instrumental behavior in both clinical OCD patients and healthy controls using a Pavlovian-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) task. PIT is typically evidenced by increased responding in the presence of a positive (previously rewarded) Pavlovian cue, and reduced responding in the presence of a negative cue. Thirty OCD patients and thirty-one healt

Estimating risk probabilities for sickness from behavioural patterns to identify health challenges in dairy cows with multivariate cumulative sum control charts.

Dairy cattle housing is characterised by increasing herd sizes and the need for assisting technical tools to monitor the cows' health. This study investigated the combination of logistic regression models with multivariate cumulative sum (MCUSUM) control charts in healthmonitoring of dairy cattle. Sensor information of 618 cows with 791 lactations (138 438 cow days), nine behavioural variables were included as parts of the behavioural patterns: physical activity ("neck activity", "leg activity", "walking duration"), resting ("lying duration", "standing duration", "transitions from lying to sta
