Comparison of the efficacy of new and conventional antipsychotic drugs in the treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).

This double-blind study evaluated the efficacy and safety of risperidone or olanzapine vs. promazine in the treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia(BPSD). Patients were required to be 65 years or older, to have DSM-IV diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia (VD) or a combination of both. A brain computerized tomography (CT) was performed for all the patients; 60 demented patients,27 men (45 %) and 33 women (55 %) were selected for this study. The University of California Los Angeles neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI) was administered at baseline, then afte

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who exhibit chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and marked fluctuation of behavioral symptoms exhibit distinct innate immune abnormalities and transcriptional profiles of peripheral blood (PB) monocytes.

Innate/adaptive immune responses and transcript profiles of peripheral blood monocytes were studied in ASD children who exhibit fluctuating behavioral symptoms following infection and other immune insults (ASD/Inf, N=30). The ASD/Inf children with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms (ASD/Inf+GI, N=19), revealed less production of proinflammatory and counter-regulatory cytokines with stimuli of innate immunity and marked changes in transcript profiles of monocytes as compared to ASD/no-Inf (N=28) and normal (N=26) controls. This included a 4-5 fold up-regulation of chemokines (CCL2 and CCL7), …

Musculoskeletal symptoms and pain-response behaviors among university students in Palestine: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) symptoms are a major contributor to disability worldwide, and university students may be increasingly affected because of prolonged sedentary behavior, intensive digital-device use, and sustained academic workloads. In Palestine, these risks may be compounded by psychosocial stressors and constrained healthcare access. This study assessed the prevalence of MSK symptoms and hand discomfort and examined associated behavioral, ergonomic, and device-use factors among Palestinian university students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,052 unive

Early Screen Time and Behavioral Symptom Trajectories in Children With Autism and ADHD: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be especially sensitive to early screen exposure due to sensory and emotional vulnerabilities. This study examined whether early screen time differentially affects behavioral trajectories in ASD, ADHD, and neurotypical children. METHODS: Using data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, linear mixed-effects models assessed outcomes. Screen time before age 2 was categorized as ≥ 14 vs. <14 h/week. Hyperactivity and emotional problems were measured at ages 4, 6, and 8, with

Compositional Associations of 24-h Movement Behaviors With Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms in Middle-Aged Adults.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity could reduce the risk of depression and anxiety. A 24-h day includes time spent sleeping, in sedentary behavior (SB), or engaging in physical activities. However, the joint and combined associations of these 24-h movement behaviors with depressive and anxiety symptoms remain unclear. AIM: To investigate the compositional associations of 24-h movement behaviors with depressive and anxiety symptoms in a population-based sample of middle-aged adults. METHODS: The study population (N = 4490) comprised of participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC

Behavioral interactions and emotional engagement with loss-related objects in bereavement: associations with grief symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: Grief involves attachment- related regulatory processes through which individuals adapt to separation from the deceased. Loss-related objects (i.e., emotionally significant belongings of the deceased) may reflect may reflect externalized expressions of proximity-seeking, yet their association with grief symptoms remains understudied. AIMS: This study examines the role of loss-related objects in the grieving process by investigating their associations with attachment styles, difficulties in emotion regulation, and grief symptom severity. METHOD: The sample consisted of 250 adults

Individualized Subcortical Functional Brain Organization Is Related to Diagnosis, Symptoms, and Behavior in Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individualized brain systems mapping is a recently developed method for understanding person-specific functional brain organization using human functional magnetic resonance imaging data. Abnormal structure and function in the subcortex have previously been implicated in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the systems-level functional organization of the subcortex in MDD has yet to be investigated. Moreover, almost all prior studies of brain systems in MDD have used group-level functional brain mapping that assumes organizational homogeneity across individual

Cross-sectional study assessing sleep behavior and musculoskeletal symptoms in elite junior badminton athletes.

Sleep inadequacy has previously been associated with increased risk of injury and reduced performance. It is unclear if sleep disorders are associated with musculoskeletal symptoms, which may be a predictor of serious injury and affect performance. The aim was therefore to assess sleep behavior in elite junior badminton players and its association to musculoskeletal symptoms. In 2018, players at the World Junior Badminton Championship completed the Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire and a modified version of the World Olympic Association Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire. Participants wer

Association of physical symptoms with accelerometer-measured movement behaviors and functional capacity in individuals with Long COVID.

Long COVID has been linked to a decline in physical activity and functional capacity. However, it remains unclear which physical symptoms are associated with specific aspects of movement behaviors and functional capacity. We aimed to investigate the associations of fatigue, dyspnea, post-exertional malaise, myalgia, and the co-occurrence of symptoms with movement behaviors and functional capacity in individuals with Long COVID. A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted. Questionnaires were used to assess fatigue, dyspnea, post-exertional malaise, and myalgia. Accelerometry was employed

Everyday Executive Function in Preschoolers with Autism and Links with Intellectual Functioning, Adaptive Behavior, and Autism Symptoms.

Impairments in executive function (EF) among individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their association with negative academic, adaptive, and social functioning outcomes have been widely reported over the past 20 years. However, there remains a lack of understanding of EF in autism during the preschool period, an age at which several crucial abilities (including EF) emerge. The present study therefore sought to document everyday EF in preschool-aged children with autism and its associations with other clinical characteristics. Parents rated the EF of their preschool-aged child with autism

Exploratory mixed methods study on care-seeking behaviors of Asian Americans with pelvic floor symptoms.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to evaluate whether younger age was associated with noncare-seeking behavior among Asian Americans with pelvic floor symptoms, and secondarily, to explore multilevel factors that may contribute to noncare-seeking behavior in this population. METHODS: We performed a concurrent mixed methods study and heterogeneously sampled Asian Americans with urinary incontinence, urgency-frequency, vaginal bulge, or anal incontinence. We stratified the participants into two groups, care seekers vs noncare seekers. Using Anderson's model as the main framework, w

Associations between Post-Traumatic stress disorder symptoms and automobile driving behaviors: A review of the literature.

Human factors are responsible for most motor vehicle accidents that occur on the road. Recent work suggests that symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are linked to reduced driving safety, yet none have provided a comprehensive review of this small, emerging literature. The present review identified twenty-two studies reporting associations between PTSD and driving behaviors. Among these, longitudinal designs (k = 3) and studies using objective driving performance measures (e.g., simulators) (k = 2) were rare. Most studies (k = 18) relied on brief screener measures of PTSD status/sy
