A Phenomenological Study of Clinical Stillbirth Management for Grieving Mothers.

For any expectant mother, the worst possible outcome of pregnancy is for the baby to die. The experience can lead to various forms of physic … d sorrow. These findings emphasize the need for training healthcare providers in perinatal loss and bereavement care, as well as the importance of adopting new policies and guidelines to improve the quality of care provided to bereaved mothers.

Hopes, concerns, satisfaction and regret in a precision medicine trial for childhood cancer: a mixed-methods study of parent and patient perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric precision oncology aims to match therapeutic agents to driver gene targets. We investigated whether parents and patients regret participation in precision medicine trials, particularly when their hopes are unfulfilled. METHODS: Parents and adolescent patients completed questionnaires at trial enrolment (T0) and after receiving results (T1). Parents opted-in to an interview at T1. Bereaved parents completed a questionnaire 6-months post-bereavement (T1B). We analysed quantitative data with R and qualitative data thematically with NVivo, before integrating all data for in…

Children's responses to family member homicide.

Homicide is a significant behavioral deviation resulting in a sudden and unexpected loss of life and can leave children in the chaotic wake. Interviews conducted with 13 children ages 9 to 11 years during the initial 1 to 3 months after a family homicide provided insight into themes of bereavement. A major finding in the study was that the witnessing or hearing the news of a family member homicide was a powerful associative factor for childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for complicated bereavement.

Depression among incarcerated persons following the death of a loved one: Does social support mitigate grief?

The death of a loved one generates adverse and potentially damaging consequences for surviving family members and friends. The challenges of bereavement can be especially severe when experienced by incarcerated persons who must cope with and grieve the death while incarcerated. Yet, limited research evaluates bereavement among incarcerated persons and whether factors such as social support buffer against health-related consequences. Using data from the LoneStar Project-a study of 802 incarcerated men in Texas-we examine depressive symptoms among currently incarcerated persons with differential…

Verbal Information From Parents About Stillbirth: The VIPS Study (Phase One).

BACKGROUND: In many countries, a baby's cause of death (COD) following stillbirth is informed only by case notes and pathology investigations. However, parents' understanding of their baby's COD may inform or even change the COD diagnosis. We aimed to produce a standardised co-designed interview schedule to enable parents to contribute information to improve overall understanding of the causes of stillbirth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consensus for the interview schedule was sought via a two-round modified Delphi study. We recruited internationally for panel membership comprising bereaved parents

Parents' Active Role and ENgagement in The review of their Stillbirth/perinatal death 2 (PARENTS 2) study: a mixed-methods study of implementation.

OBJECTIVE: When a formal review of care takes places after the death of a baby, parents are largely unaware it takes place and are often not meaningfully involved in the review process. Parent engagement in the process is likely to be essential for a successful review and to improve patient safety. This study aimed to evaluate an intervention process of parental engagement in perinatal mortality review (PNMR) and to identify barriers and facilitators to its implementation. DESIGN: Mixed-methods study of parents' engagement in PNMR. SETTING: Single tertiary maternity unit in the UK. PARTICIP

Psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale.

Given the severe mental health consequences that may ensue after bereavement, it is crucial to better understand malleable cognitive factors that are associated with poorer bereavement outcomes. Grief rumination (i.e., repetitive thinking about the causes and consequences of a loss) is a malleable cognitive process that is concurrently and longitudinally associated with postloss mental health problems. To assess grief rumination, the English and Dutch Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) were recently developed. The current study examined the reliability and validity of a Chinese version of t…

Shifting the aged care culture from caring "for" residents to caring "about" residents: Advocating for a compassionate communities approach to care.

BACKGROUND: An independent evaluation sought to understand the broader impacts of the West Australian National Partnership Agreement for Com … ely information, better communication, and appropriate resources to feel supported before and after bereavement. They also wanted to be more involved in care decisions undertaken within RACH. These needs were reflected in priorities 2 (care is person-centred) and 4 (families and carers are supported), which were rated the lowest among the six priorities. CON …

Being tough, being healthy: local forms of counselling in response to adult death in northwest Tanzania.

While antiretroviral medicines have reduced AIDS-related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa, many people still lose multiple family members and st … eously struggling to fulfil the social obligations around mourning that contribute to their ongoing bereavement. Oyegumisilize can be seen as a counselling practice that helps those who have lost loved ones to move on with life and feel normal. It is argued that this form of counselling is a form of therapeutic speech, where the emphasis is not on 'talking th …

[Surviving the suicide of a loved one: impact and postvention.].

UNLABELLED: Suicide is a public health problem having important consequences also for people who survive to the suicide of a loved one - the suicide loss survivors. Since suicide bereavement can have a lasting and significant psychosocial impact on the bereaved individuals, psychosocial treatments are needed (postvention). Many countries have included postvention in their suicide prevention policies. This is a narrative review aiming to investigate the bereavement experience of suicide loss survivors, the associated symptoms, and to describe adequate treatments to properly reduce survivors' gr…

Chronic sorrow in families of disabled children.

Among professionals who work with disabled children and their families, the need has arisen for better articulation of the concept of chronic sorrow, a bereavement process parents experience in response to life with a disabled child. This article presents information and concepts about the nature of chronic sorrow that permit clarification and understanding of the meaning of what is otherwise often confusing parent behavior. Implications for the professional in assisting the parent's movement through the bereavement process will be discussed.

Validation of the Italian version Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG): a study comparing CG patients versus bipolar disorder, PTSD and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: A minority (9%-20%) of bereaved individuals experience symptoms of persistent intense grief associated with significant distress and impairment. This recently identified distinct post-loss syndrome has been variously named complicated grief, prolonged grief disorder, traumatic grief and persistent complex bereavement disorder. The Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) is a self-report instrument used to reliably identify this syndrome. We undertook a study to: 1) validate the Italian version of the ICG; 2) examine its performance in a clinical of bereaved individuals with complicate…

"Second class loss": political culture as a recovery barrier--the families of terrorist casualties' struggle for national honors, recognition, and belonging.

Israeli families of terrorist victims have undertaken initiatives to include their dearest in the national pantheon. The objections opposed the penetration of "second-class loss" into the symbolic closure of heroic national bereavement. The "hierarchy of bereavement" is examined through the lens of political culture organized around the veneration held for the army fallen and their families, which has symbolic as well as rehabilitative outcomes. Families of civilian terror victims claims for similar status and treatment had to frame their loss as national in the eyes of the social policy. The …

Preparedness as a Bridge: How Religious Coping Shapes Acceptance of Death in Dementia Caregiving.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the role of religious coping and preparedness in shaping caregivers' acceptance of death following the loss of a care recipient with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias. Two competing path models were tested to determine whether preparedness serves as a mediator or an outcome in the relationship between religious coping and acceptance. METHODS: Data were drawn from the bereavement battery of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH II) study. The analytic sample included 41 bereaved caregivers who completed measures of positive and n…

Prevalence rates of prolonged grief disorder are overestimated.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has been included in the International Classification of Diseases 11th edition (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Accurate assessment of the prevalence of PGD is imperative to healthcare policy and practice. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of at-risk bereaved subgroups (e.g. those bereaved by natural disasters, unnatural causes, and COVID-19) yield very high prevalence rates (24-87%). These findings appear at odds with the well-established finding that most people respond to major

Trajectories of geriatric depression after spousal loss: Effects of sudden loss and social engagement.

OBJECTIVES: Bereavement poses a significant mental health risk later in life; however, many older adults exhibit resilience in the face of loss. Based on the Dual Process Model (DPM) of coping with bereavement, this study investigated how psychological and social factors pertaining to loss- and restoration-oriented processes predict geriatric depression trajectories following spousal loss. METHOD: This study used longitudinal multilevel modeling to analyze eight waves of data (2006-2020) from 510 bereaved individuals participating in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA). RESULTS: …

[Toward an integrated understanding of traumatic grief - connecting prolonged grief, posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms].

BACKGROUND: Psychological grief symptoms following bereavement have been extensively researched and described, with the distinction, generally speaking, of three sets of disorders: prolonged grief disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. AIM: To investigate the connection and co-occurrence between the symptoms of these three disorders. METHOD: Conducting and combining studies from a categorical, dimensional, person-centered and network perspective on psychopathology. RESULTS: We found a prevalence of 49% of prolonged grief disorder among traumatically bereaved individuals. Of…

Family-perceived distress from delirium-related symptoms of terminally ill cancer patients.

Delirium is a frequent symptom of terminally ill cancer patients and can cause serious distress to family members. To clarify the degree of emotional distress of family members concerning terminal delirium, a survey of bereaved families was performed. A questionnaire was mailed to 300 bereaved families with a request to rate the frequency and level of their distress for 12 delirium-related symptoms. A total of 195 responses were analyzed (effective response rate=65%). Seventy-four percent and 62% of the family members reported that the patients had symptoms of physical restlessness and mood la
