As through a glass, darkly: the future of sexually transmissible infections among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

The trajectory of sexually transmissible infection (STI) incidence among gay and other men who have sex with men (MSM) suggests that incidence will likely remain high in the near future. STIs were hyperendemic globally among MSM in the decades preceding the HIV epidemic. Significant changes among MSM as a response to the HIV epidemic, caused STI incidence to decline, reaching historical nadirs in the mid-1990s. With the advent of antiretroviral treatment (ART), HIV-related mortality and morbidity declined significantly in that decade. Concurrently, STI incidence resurged among MSM and increase

Preintervention Profiles of Information, Motivational, and Behavioral Self-Efficacy for Methamphetamine Use and HIV Medication Adherence Among Gay and Bisexual Men.

Although rates of crystal methamphetamine use in the United States have fallen from their peak in the mid-2000s, use remains a major public health concern, which disproportionately affects gay and bisexual men (GBM). It poses a particular challenge for HIV-positive men, for whom it has been linked to medication adherence problems as well as compromised immune function. Although the information, motivation, and behavioral skills (IMB) model has been widely used to conceptualize health behavior, little is known about GBM's initial levels of information, motivation, and behavioral self-efficacy t

Adult attachment as a moderator of the association between childhood traumatic experiences and depression symptoms among young Black gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the moderating effect of adult attachment on the association between childhood traumatic experiences, (i.e., physical abuse, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and being bullied), age of childhood traumatic experience, and young adult depression symptoms among young Black gay and bisexual men (YBGBM). METHOD: Self-report measures of attachment, childhood traumatic experiences, and depression symptoms were collected from a community-based sample of YBGBM living in New York City (n = 228). Regression analyses were conducted to address the study goals. RES

Syndemic production and sexual compulsivity/hypersexuality in highly sexually active gay and bisexual men: further evidence for a three group conceptualization.

Among gay and bisexual men (GBM), a syndemic describes a situation in which negative conditions (e.g., childhood sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, depression, polysubstance use) co-occur such to amplify HIV risk. Research has suggested that sexual compulsivity (SC) may also be a syndemic condition. Between 2011 and 2013, 368 highly sexually active (9+ male partners in 90 days) GBM completed a survey of syndemic factors as well as measures of sexual compulsivity (Sexual Compulsivity Scale [SCS]) and hypersexuality (hypersexual disorder screening inventory [HDSI]). Based on scores on the

Recommendations for promoting the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adolescents: a position paper of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Adolescent health care providers frequently care for patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT), or who may be struggling with or questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. Whereas these youth have the same health concerns as their non-LGBT peers, LGBT teens may face additional challenges because of the complexity of the coming-out process, as well as societal discrimination and bias against sexual and gender minorities. The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine encourages adolescent providers and researchers to incorporate the impact of these d

Sexual health screening among racially/ethnically diverse young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

PURPOSE: Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a crucial element of improving health and reducing disparities, and young men who have sex with men (YMSM) face high rates of both STIs and human immunodeficiency virus. We examined sexual health screening among a diverse sample of adolescent YMSM living in New York City. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2011, cross-sectional data were collected from 590 YMSM in New York City. Separate multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between sociodemographic, psychosocial, and health and healthcare related

Alcohol and other drug use, club drug dependence and treatment seeking among lesbian, gay and bisexual young people in Sydney.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Substance use and substance use problems are often more prevalent in same-sex attracted young people (SSAY), yet little to date has been published about substance use and problems in this population in Australia. This paper aimed to characterise patterns of alcohol use, club drug use and dependence, injecting drug use and engagement with treatment services, comparing lesbians, gay men, bisexual women and bisexual men. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, online survey was conducted with 572 SSAY in Sydney, aged 18 to 25 years. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification

Methamphetamine use and other club drug use differ in relation to HIV status and risk behavior among gay and bisexual men.

This study compared associations between methamphetamine use, drug use other than methamphetamine, and HIV transmission factors among men who have sex with men, attending an sexually transmitted disease clinic. Of 6435 participants, newly recognized HIV status (OR: 3.02 95% CI: 2.30, 3.99) was associated with methamphetamine use compared with nondrug users, an association not found among other club drug users.

"If you know you exist, it's just marketing poison": meanings of tobacco industry targeting in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

In the public health literature, it is generally assumed that the perception of "targeting" as positive or negative by the targeted audience depends on the product or message being promoted. Smoking prevalence rates are high among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, but little is known about how they perceive tobacco industry targeting. We conducted focus groups with LGBT individuals in 4 US cities to explore their perceptions. Our findings indicated that focus group participants often responded positively to tobacco company targeting. Targeting connoted community visib

Prevalence of mental disorders, psychological distress, and mental health services use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United States.

Recent estimates of mental health morbidity among adults reporting same-gender sexual partners suggest that lesbians, gay men, and bisexual individuals may experience excess risk for some mental disorders as compared with heterosexual individuals. However, sexual orientation has not been measured directly. Using data from a nationally representative survey of 2,917 midlife adults, the authors examined possible sexual orientation-related differences in morbidity, distress, and mental health services use. Results indicate that gay-bisexual men evidenced higher prevalence of depression, panic att

Is gender dysphoria dysphoric? Elevated depression and anxiety in gender dysphoric and nondysphoric homosexual and bisexual men in an HIV sample. HNRC Group.

Few if any studies before the AIDS epidemic suggested that male homosexuals may on average have higher levels of depression than male heterosexuals. However, several samples of homosexual and bisexual men in HIV studies suggest that depression and anxiety are high in these populations, and that this psychiatric morbidity began before the AIDS epidemic. We tested the hypothesis that high childhood gender nonconformity (CGN) is associated with depression and anxiety, and so might account for differences in these variables among samples of homosexuals. A total of 254 homosexual or bisexual male s

Prevalence, incidence, and progression of human immunodeficiency virus infection in homosexual and bisexual men in hepatitis B vaccine trials, 1978-1988.

Between 1978 and 1980, 359 hepatitis B seronegative homosexual and bisexual men were recruited from the San Francisco municipal sexually transmitted disease clinic for hepatitis B vaccine trials. Of the 359 participants, 320 (89%) consented to have their stored blood samples tested for human immunodeficiency virus antibodies. The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection in these 320 vaccine trial participants rose from 0.3% in 1978 to 50.9% in 1988. The annual incidence of human immunodeficiency virus infection showed that seroconversion peaked in 1980-1982, dropped significantly i

Evaluating mental health integration in PrEP programs to reduce HIV incidence among US gay and bisexual men: a network modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in HIV prevention, achieving elimination in the United States (US) remains challenging, particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Psychosocial barriers, including stigma and mental health challenges, influence sexual behaviors and hinder engagement in HIV prevention and care, suggesting that integrated interventions may improve HIV-related service uptake and reduce HIV incidence. METHODS: We adapted a stochastic network model simulating HIV transmission dynamics in a southeastern US metro to include individual-level sexual stig

Visualizing identity and healing among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+)+ Latine people: A photovoice study of resistance in Central Texas.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ+) Latine individuals in Central Texas experience interdependent systems of oppression due to colonization and the recent rise of hostile social policies and attitudes. Despite these challenges, they continue to survive and thrive, though little is known about the population's resistance strategies. Our photovoice study employs a borderlands framework to explore resistance through visual and narrative data from 15 LGBTQ+ Latine adults living in Central Texas. Study procedures were developed in collaboration with a community advisory board of L

Sexual Consent as a Continuous Process in a Sexually Diverse Sample: Women and Bisexual Individuals Are Less Sexually Coercive Than Men and Heterosexual Individuals.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the study of sexual consent, particularly among diverse sexual samples, including from a gender perspective. The concept and definition of sexual consent are evolving from a static, general, and pre-sexual activity issue to a dynamic process that must be present throughout the entire sexual encounter. Therefore, it is necessary to use instruments that consider this dimension, and to adapt and validate them for diverse languages and cultures to facilitate the replication of quantitative studies. The objective of the present research was twofol

Exploring experiences of talk therapies among gay and bisexual men seeking to reduce or abstain from using crystal methamphetamine in the context of chemsex.

INTRODUCTION: Some gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) who use drugs to enhance sex (chemsex/party and play) may experience harms and seek talk therapies. GBMSM who practice chemsex may not access drug services because of anticipated stigma and the perception that these services lack chemsex expertise. Barriers to services are documented, however, little is known about the service experiences of chemsex engaged GBMSM. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 participants reporting current practice of sexualised use of methamphetamine and/or gamma hydroxybutyra
