Background: Most often, fever is still treated by lowering body temperature with medication. In complementary and integrative health care, patients are supported during illness to use the positive effects of fever. Accompanying applications from the field of hydrotherapy are often used for gentle cooling, but there are references that warming in fever can also be used as a support. The aim of this scoping review was to identify available evidence on how, when, and why patients with fever are treated with heat application. Methods: The MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, COCHRANE, Google, and Google Schol

The hemoglobin (Hb) content of packed red blood cell (PRBC) units is heterogenous. The efficacy of a transfusion episode can be assessed if the Hb content of the PRBC is known and the patient's post-transfusion Hb increment is also determined. This prospective study compared the efficacy of PRBC transfusion based on its Hb content versus the standard transfusion practice. A total of 160 thalassemia major patients were enrolled and randomly divided into two equal groups: Group I (n = 80) - they received ABO/RhD identical PRBCs after determining its Hb content (≥50 g); and Group II (n = 80) - th

BACKGROUND: Although Egypt places four generic pictorial health warnings (PHWs) on the front and back half of waterpipe tobacco packs (WTPs), waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) rates have continued to rise. It has been suggested that PHWs would be more salient if placed on the waterpipe device itself. This qualitative study explored how participants perceived the effects placing PHWs on waterpipe devices would have on warning salience and uptake or quitting of WTS.
METHODS: We conducted 10 focus groups and 10 in-depth interviews with 90 adult waterpipe smokers and non-smokers, men and women, who

BACKGROUND: In addition to pharmacovigilance and pharmaco-economic concerns, resistance to anti-malarial medicines has been documented in all classes of anti-malarials and this is further worsened by resistance to common insecticides by malaria vector, which is a major threat to malaria control. As a means of facing the challenges of searching for new anti-malarial agents, the current study focused on evaluation of anti-malarial activity of root extract of Indigofera spicata.
METHODS: Chloroquine-sensitive rodent malaria parasite, Plasmodium berghei (ANKA strain) was used to infect the Swiss

Bovine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by Babesia spp. haemoprotozoans. The disease is of great importance at tick enzootic unstable areas and hampers cattle production in several developing countries. The available immunisation alternatives are pre-immunition and attenuated vaccines. Despite being efficient and protective, they are unsafe as they use cattle blood cells as inoculum and may potentially spread other diseases. Another alternative to help in babesiosis control would be the identification of genetically resistant cattle to Babesia bovis infection. The objective of this wo

This study was designed to evaluate possible organ and system disorders associated with experimentally induced levamisole poisoning in dogs. For this purpose, twelve clinically healthy dogs of different ages, sexes and breeds were used. They were divided into two equal groups (Group A and Group B) and given levamisole orally at a dose of 25 mg/kg of body weight daily for three days. The dogs in Group B were also injected with atropin sulphate (0.04 mg/kg of body weight) subcutaneously (sc) 1 hour after each administration of levamisole. Routine clinical examinations were made and some haematol

Nonoperative management of splenic and hepatic injuries in children is safe, and the majority of those with isolated injuries do not require blood transfusion. Thirty-seven children were treated for blunt splenic or hepatic trauma from November 1983 to September 1989. There was one death in a patient with a lethal head injury. No operations were performed on those with isolated splenic or hepatic injuries. Three of those with multiple injuries underwent delayed laparotomy. Two had perirenal and retroperitoneal hematomas without active bleeding, and one had a bowel obstruction secondary to an i

This study investigated the influence of pacer body size on the aerodynamic drag experienced by elite marathon runners. Using 3D numerical simulations, various drafting configurations were analyzed at a running speed of 21 km/h with 1.2 m spacings between runners. The modeled runner groups comprised one elite protected marathoner (1.80 m) and one or two pacers of different heights (1.70 m, 1.80 m, and 1.90 m). Isosurfaces of total pressure and pressure coefficient maps revealed that taller pacers generate a wider wake and a more favorable pressure field for downstream runners. Specifically

Weibel-Palade bodies (WPB) are secretory organelles exclusively found in endothelial cells and among other cargo proteins, contain the hemostatic von-Willebrand factor (VWF). Stimulation of endothelial cells results in exocytosis of WPB and release of their cargo into the vascular lumen, where VWF unfurls into long strings of up to 1000 µm and recruits platelets to sites of vascular injury, thereby mediating a crucial step in the hemostatic response. The function of VWF is strongly correlated to its structure; in order to fulfill its task in the vascular lumen, VWF has to undergo a complex pac

In recent years, naturally occurring materials have gained tremendous attention for their potential in the fabrication of advanced wearable electronic devices. Among these materials, spider silk is well-known for its outstanding mechanical strength and physical properties. Leveraging these attributes, a highly stretchable strain sensor was developed in this work utilizing polyurethane packed graphene-coated spider silk fabricated through a simple dip-casting method. The proposed sensor demonstrated remarkable mechanical strength, excellent sensitivity to strain and impressive recovery properti

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the most abundant antibody in the human body and plays a critical role in defending against bacteria and viruses that invade through mucosal surfaces. Leveraging this property, recombinant IgA has been developed as a preventive drug for infectious diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, and tuberculosis. Recombinant IgA is typically purified using columns packed with protein-immobilized resins, such as jacalin, Protein L, or nanobody-based materials. However, these methods have several drawbacks, including high costs due to expensive resins and mobile phases, the need f

Alpha-synuclein (aSyn) post-translational modifications (PTM), especially phosphorylation at serine 129 and C-terminal truncations, are highly enriched in Lewy bodies (LB), Lewy neurites, and other pathological aggregates in Parkinson's disease and synucleinopathies. However, the precise role of these PTM in pathology formation, neurodegeneration, and pathology spreading remains unclear. Here, we systematically investigated the role of post-fibrillization C-terminal aSyn truncations in regulating uptake, processing, seeding, and LB-like inclusion formation using a neuronal seeding model that r

INTRODUCTION: Gossypiboma, the retention of surgical material in the body post-surgery, is a rare but serious complication often underreported due to legal and reputational concerns. It commonly occurs after abdominal surgeries, with presentations ranging from abscess formation to intestinal obstruction.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 18-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain and distention, along with vomiting for six weeks after cholecystectomy. Initial misdiagnoses as pancreatitis delayed appropriate treatment. Exploratory laparotomy revealed an intra-abdominal gossypiboma, which had transm

The corneal endothelium, comprising densely packed corneal endothelial cells (CECs) adhering to Descemet's membrane (DM), plays a critical role in maintaining corneal transparency by regulating water and ion movement. CECs have limited regenerative capacity within the body, and globally, there is a shortage of donor corneas to replace damaged corneal endothelia. The development of a carrier for cultured CECs may address this worldwide clinical need. In this study we successfully manufactured a gelatin nanofiber membrane (gelNF membrane) using electrospinning, followed by crosslinking with glut

Acute coronary thrombosis is a known, but rare, contributor to morbidity and mortality in patients with thermal and electrical injuries. The overall incidence of myocardial infarction among burn patients is 1%, with an in-hospital post-infarction mortality of approximately 67%, whereas the overall mortality rate of the general burn patient population is from 1.4% to 18%. As such, early detection and effective peri-operative management are essential to optimize patient outcomes. Here, we report the details of the management of an adult male patient with a 65% total body surface area severe ther
