INTRODUCTION: This retrospective study aims to describe systematically the fetal cerebral MR morphology in cases with occipital meningoencephaloceles using standard and advanced fetal MRI techniques.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 1.5-tesla MR examinations (T1- and T2-weighted imaging, echo planar imaging, EPI, diffusion-weighted imaging, DWI) of 14 fetuses with occipital/parietal meningoencephaloceles were retrospectively analyzed for the classification of anatomic characteristics. A diffusion tensor sequence was performed in 5 cases.
RESULTS: In 9/14 cases the occipital lobes were entirely or p

A case of intracranial hemorrhage associated with injury of a critical diploic venous system in clipping for an unruptured cerebral aneurysm was reported. A 67-year-old female presented with a sense of floating. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) showed a C1-2 portion aneurysm of the left internal carotid artery 13 mm in size projecting supero-laterally. Three-dimensional CT angiography (3DCTA) volume rendering revealed a developed left fronto-anterior temporal diploic venous system draining the frontal cortical venous return. Because of the large and wide-necked aneurysm, we planned clippin

Cushing reflex' is characterized by the occurrence of hypertension, bradycardia and apnoea secondary to raised increased intracranial pressure (ICP), leading to pressure on and or stretch, or both, of the brainstem. With the wide availability of monitoring facilities and advancements in investigation techniques, observation of increased intracranial pressure resulting in haemodynamic instability and bradycardia has been increasingly recognized in relation to many neurosurgical conditions and procedures. The causes of bradycardia include space occupying lesion involving or compressing the brain

To date, only ofloxacin has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of ears with a nonintact tympanic membrane. The purpose of this study was to determine the safety and efficacy of topical ciprofloxacin hydrochloride in the treatment of experimental chronic suppurative otitis media caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cynomolgus monkeys. Forty adult cynomolgus monkeys were divided into 4 equal groups, and their ears were challenged with P aeruginosa, drained for 3 weeks, then treated twice daily for 4 weeks with 1 of 4 randomly assigned agents: 1) ciproflox

To study the effect of oligohydramnios on lung growth and biochemical lung development in fetal rabbits, amniotic fluid was drained through a tube inserted into the maternal peritoneal cavity on the 23 day of gestation. Littermate fetuses without an amniotic shunt were used as controls. The fetuses were delivered abdominally on the 28 day of gestation. In a total of 8 pregnant does, 17 fetuses underwent amniotic shunting and 22 fetuses were used as controls. The amniotic shunt produced a significant reduction in the amniotic fluid volume. There were no differences in the wet weights of the fet

Embolization can be an effective treatment modality for some patients with brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Since no specific criteria predictive of the degree of occlusion after a single-stage embolization have been established, this study aimed to analyze the AVM draining vein and nidus from the hemodynamic and radiomic point of view, in search for parameters associated with the need for a multiple-stage embolization, thereby identifying patients less suitable for endovascular treatment. We retrospectively analyzed 29 patients who underwent a curative embolization of a brain AVM, am

BACKGROUND: Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are intracranial vascular lesions characterized by a nidus of vessels fed by an artery and drained by a vein, lacking intervening capillaries. Angiography remains the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis. There is a paucity in the literature regarding clinical presentation and management of patients with calcified cerebral AVM (cCAVM). This study aims to highlight the clinical presentation and management of patients with cCAVM and also to propose a classification of calcification patterns in cCAVMs based on brain computed tomography (CT)

Background: Focused ultrasound (FUS) activation of microbubbles (MBs) for blood-brain (BBB) and blood-tumor barrier (BTB) opening permits targeted therapeutic delivery. While the effects of FUS+MBs mediated BBB opening have been investigated for normal brain tissue, no such studies exist for intracranial tumors. As this technology advances into clinical immunotherapy trials, it will be crucial to understand how FUS+MBs modulates the tumor immune microenvironment. Methods and Results: Bulk RNA sequencing revealed that FUS+MBs BTB/BBB opening (1 MHz, 0.5 MPa peak-negative pressure) of intracrani

RATIONALE: A developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is the most common intracranial congenital anomaly and is mostly asymptomatic. Thrombosis rarely develops in a DVA due to hypercoagulation. We report a case of ischemic stroke in the area of a DVA after minor head trauma in a patient with DVA and without a predisposition thrombosis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A healthy 17-year-old male was admitted to the emergency room due to left hemiparesis, which was caused by a ball hitting the right side of his head during a soccer game.
DIAGNOSIS: Brain magnetic resonance (MR) susceptibility-weighted image showed

Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA; valine, leucine, and isoleucine) supplementation is common for patients with liver cirrhosis due to decreased levels of BCAA in the blood plasma of these patients, which plays a role in pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy and cachexia. The unique pharmacologic properties of BCAA also are a factor for use as supplementation in this population. In the present article, BCAA is shown to provide nitrogen to alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG) for synthesis of glutamate, which is a substrate for ammonia detoxification to glutamine (GLN) in the brain and muscles. Cadaveric shortages have been a challenge to anatomy education; as access remains low in many parts of the world, institutions are relying on plastinated specimens. Plastination typically requires the use of complex equipment and patented chemicals. While models solve cost and toxicity issues, in neuroanatomical education, the rigidity prevents deep-brain structure exploration and visual-spatial learning. The Elnady technique (ET) developed by Dr. Fawzy Elnady is an alternative method that solves the limitations of traditional plastination while maintaining the advantages previously developed

Recent studies have shown that meningeal lymphatic vessels (MLVs), which are located both dorsally and basally beneath the skull, provide a route for draining macromolecules and trafficking immune cells from the central nervous system (CNS) into cervical lymph nodes (CLNs), and thus represent a potential therapeutic target for treating neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases. However, the roles of MLVs in brain tumor drainage and immunity remain unexplored. Here we show that dorsal MLVs undergo extensive remodeling in mice with intracranial gliomas or metastatic melanomas. RNA-seq ana

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) in oligodendrocytes accompanied by inflammation, demyelination, and subsequent synapse and neuronal loss. Little is known about the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in MSA. However, recent work has highlighted the important role of the immune system to the pathophysiology of other synuclein-related diseases such as Parkinson's disease. In this study, we investigated postmortem brain tissue from MSA patients and control subjects for evidence of immune activa

Cerebral proliferative angiopathy (CPA) is a unique and rare vascular malformation with distinct clinico-radiological features. CPA is associated with low risk of hemorrhage as compared to classical cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Infratentorial location of diffuse nidus is also an uncommon presentation. Infratentorial hemorrhagic presentation of CPA is a rare co-occurrence. Herein, we report a case of an elderly old male, who presented with acute onset severe headache, recurrent vomiting, vertigo and swaying toward left side while walking. Cerebellar signs in the form of scanning

The pathophysiological potential of mediator substances in manifestations of secondary brain damage is attracting increased attention. This is particularly true of the excitatory transmitters glutamate and arachidonic acid. Noxious properties of these compounds in central nervous tissue have been demonstrated. The current study was performed to determine whether glutamate and arachidonate are released in brain tissue secondary to focal trauma. For this purpose, a cold injury of exposed cerebral cortex was induced in cats. Marked accumulation of glutamate was observed in interstitially drained

It is believed that respiratory mucosal immunization triggers more effective immune protection than parenteral immunization against respiratory infection caused by viruses and intracellular bacteria. Such understanding has led to the successful implementation of intranasal immunization in humans with a live cold-adapted flu virus vaccine. Furthermore there has been an interest in developing effective mucosal-deliverable genetic vaccines against other infectious diseases. However, there is a concern that intranasally delivered recombinant viral-based vaccines may disseminate to the CNS via the

The combination of 100 microm thick celloidin sections and alkaline phosphatase (AP) enzyme histochemistry of the vascular endothelium offers a greatly enhanced, 3D morphologic perspective and reveals intricate details of the vasculature of brain. A study of tumor specimens obtained at craniotomy from 6 patients with glioblastomas, 1 with anaplastic oligodendroglioma and 1 with juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma was undertaken using this technique. Five of the 6 glioblastomas, the anaplastic oligodendroglioma and the low-grade astrocytoma specimen showed uniform staining of afferent tumor blood ve

IFN-gamma-inducible protein 10 (IP-10, CXCL10), a chemokine secreted from cells stimulated with type I and II IFNs and LPS, is a chemoattractant for activated T cells. Expression of IP-10 is seen in many Th1-type inflammatory diseases, where it is thought to play an important role in recruiting activated T cells into sites of tissue inflammation. To determine the in vivo function of IP-10, we constructed an IP-10-deficient mouse (IP-10(-/-)) by targeted gene disruption. Immunological analysis revealed that IP-10(-/-) mice had impaired T cell responses. T cell proliferation to allogeneic and an
