The aim of this study is to investigate the possible role of inhibitor of DNA binding (Id-1) overexpression in human breast cancer. We examined Id-1 expression by immunohistochemistry in 263 human breast cancers, 15 in situ lesions and 248 invasive cancers to investigate the relationship between its expression and various clinicopathological factors. Id-1 expression was significantly higher in invasive ductal carcinoma than in in situ ductal carcinoma or other invasive cancer subtypes (P=0.029 and 0.006, respectively). We also examined the association between Id-1 expression and tumor angiogen

PURPOSE: A deterioration in bone strength and balance performance after breast cancer treatment can result in injurious falls. Therefore, interventions need to be developed to improve the bone strength and balance ability of breast cancer survivors. This cross-sectional exploratory study aimed to compare the bone mineral density (BMD), balance performance, balance self-efficacy, and number of falls between breast cancer survivors who practiced qigong, breast cancer survivors who did not practice qigong, and healthy individuals.
METHODS: The study included 40 breast cancer survivors with more

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density is a well-established risk factor for breast cancer. We investigated the association between three different methods of measuring density or parenchymal pattern/texture on digitized film-based mammograms, and examined to what extent textural features independently and jointly with density can improve the ability to identify screening women at increased risk of breast cancer.
METHODS: The study included 121 cases and 259 age- and time matched controls based on a cohort of 14,736 women with negative screening mammograms from a population-based screening programm

High mammographic density is a well-known risk factor for breast cancer and reduces the sensitivity of mammography-based screening. While automated machine and deep learning-based methods provide more consistent and precise measurements compared to subjective Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) assessments, they often fail to account for the longitudinal evolution of density. Many of these methods assess mammographic density in a cross-sectional manner, overlooking correlations in repeated measures, irregular visit intervals, missing data, and informative dropouts. Joint models

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the association between age at first full-term pregnancy (FFTP) and mammographic breast density (MBD) in postmenopausal women. A total of 1,034 women, ages 50 to 69 years, were recruited from the Flemish (Belgium) population–based breast cancer screening program. Participants completed a questionnaire on lifestyle and reproductive factors. From mammography, we assessed the percentage glandular tissue of the total breast volume (GLAND), the volumetric breast density (VBD), and the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) density classification. For stati…

OBJECTIVES: Previous research suggests a one-size-fits-all approach to breast density notification may disadvantage culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women. This study aimed to qualitatively explore CALD women's understanding and views of breast density, attitudes towards health services access, acceptability of notification and preferences for breast density communication ahead of population-based notification in Australia.
METHODS: Online focus groups were conducted with CALD women of breast screening age (40-74 years) who spoke one of the five languages with the lowest English p…

• The negative findings from the linked study suggest breast density may not affect prognosis after a breast cancer diagnosis. • Cancer stage and overdiagnosis are potential confounders of the relationship between breast density and health outcomes. • The prognostic value of changes in mammographic density over time may be explored in future research.

Recent evidence has linked certain mammographic characteristics, including breast calcifications (Bcs) and mammographic density (MD), with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk factors in women, but data are limited and inconsistent. We aimed to evaluate the association of MD and/or Bcs with hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia in women ≥40 years of age. Through hospital electronic records, we retrospectively identified mammograms of non-pregnant women aged ≥40 years and without breast cancer and retrieved reports and relevant data. MD and Bcs were recorded; risk factor statu

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore Australian women's current knowledge, perspectives and attitudes about breast density (BD); and information needs to inform effective evidence-based communication strategies.
METHODS: Fourteen online focus group sessions with a total of 78 women in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia aged 40-74 years without a personal diagnosis of breast cancer were conducted. Audio-recorded data was transcribed and analysed thematically.
RESULTS: Women had a very limited knowledge of BD. Overall, women expressed a preference for more frequent mammograms and/or s…

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the limitations of mammography screening for women with dense breasts, we examined breast density and its effects on screening results.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, observational study on women who underwent mammography. Data from the National Cancer Screening Program(NCSP) from 2009 to 2013 were used. The study population consisted of participants with high breast density. We used a logistic regression analysis to evaluate the relationships between breast density and reproductive factors and screening results according to menopause status.

OBJECTIVE: Various clinical risk factors, including high breast density, have been shown to be associated with breast cancer. The utility of using relative and absolute area-based breast density-related measures was evaluated as an alternative to clinical risk factors in cancer risk assessment at the time of screening mammography.
METHODS: Contralateral mediolateral oblique digital mammography images from 392 females with unilateral breast cancer and 817 age-matched controls were analysed. Information on clinical risk factors was obtained from the provincial breast-imaging information system.…

Mammographic density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer, but its potential application in risk management is not clear, partly due to uncertainties about its interaction with other breast cancer risk factors. We aimed to quantify the impact of mammographic density on breast cancer risk in women aged 40-49 at intermediate familial risk of breast cancer (average lifetime risk of 23%), in particular in premenopausal women, and to investigate its relationship with other breast cancer risk factors in this population. We present the results from a case-control study nested with the FH01 cohor

INTRODUCTION: Gilbert's Syndrome (GS), an indirect hyperbilirubinemia resulting from the reduced hepatic bilirubin-glucuronyltransferase enzyme activity, influences estrogen metabolism. Polymorphisms in the UGT gene, such as those associated with GS, can alter estrogen clearance, impacting hormonal exposure and, consequently, breast density, an independent risk factor for breast cancer. Furthermore, the accumulation of estrogenic metabolites like 4-OH-estrogens, recognized as carcinogenic agents, suggests a potential increased risk of breast cancer in GS patients. Given this complex interrelat…

BACKGROUND: Oestrogen-receptor positive breast cancer patients are typically treated with adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET), some develop AET resistance. Previous research suggests mammographic density (MD) may represent an imaging biomarker, with fewer local or distant recurrences occurring with decreasing MD. We investigate whether reduction in MD after 1 and/or 3 years is associated with improved breast cancer specific survival (BCSS), metastasis-free survival (MFS) or disease-free survival (DFS).
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was generated from a Mammo-50 trial subset. Participa

INTRODUCTION: In the present study, we investigated the potential for routine staging computed tomography (CT) to assess fracture risk in breast cancer patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 184 randomized CT data sets of women with breast cancer were studied. Intellispace Density software (Philips, Amsterdam, Netherlands) was used to determine the mean volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of 3 nonfractured vertebral bodies (T12-L4) and predictors according to the quantitative and qualitative tumor morphology. Two radiologists detected prevalent vertebral fractures and classified them (
