Herbivore-induced resistance against microbial pathogens in Arabidopsis.

Caterpillars of the herbivore Pieris rapae stimulate the production of jasmonic acid (JA) and ethylene (ET) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and trigger a defense response that affects insect performance on systemic tissues. To investigate the spectrum of effectiveness of P. rapae-induced resistance, we examined the level of resistance against different pathogens. Although the necrotrophic fungus Alternaria brassicicola is sensitive to JA-dependent defenses, herbivore-induced resistance was not effective against this pathogen. By contrast, caterpillar feeding significantly reduced disease

Ocular lesions caused by caterpillar hairs (ophthalmia nodosa).

The ocular reactions to caterpillar hairs are diverse in nature and location, ranging from a toxic reaction to the external foreign bodies, keratoconjunctivitis or the formation of conjunctival nodules, to intense iritis, vitritis or papillitis. Four cases are presented in this paper to illustrate the various degrees of ocular involvement. Included are clinical photographs of intravitreal and subretinal hairs. A classification of these reactions is suggested to facilitate the choice of treatment.

Programmed meiotic errors facilitate dichotomous sperm production in the silkworm, Bombyx mori.

The goal of meiosis is typically to produce haploid gametes (eggs or sperm). Failure to do so is catastrophic for fertility. However, Lepidopteran (moths and butterflies) males produce two sperm morphs: nucleated (eupyrene) sperm and anucleated (apyrene) sperm, both of which are essential for fertilization. The meiotic differences in the two types of spermatogenesis are unclear, and our knowledge of the molecular differences between eupyrene and apyrene spermatogenesis is extremely limited in all systems. The only factor identified as being required for apyrene spermatogenesis is Sex-lethal (S…

Responses of compass neurons in the locust brain to visual motion and leg motor activity.

The central complex, a group of midline neuropils in the insect brain, plays a key role in spatial orientation and navigation. Work in locusts, crickets, dung beetles, bees and butterflies suggests that it harbors a network of neurons which determines the orientation of the insect relative to the pattern of polarized light in the blue sky. In locusts, these 'compass cells' also respond to simulated approaching objects. Here, we investigated in the locust Schistocerca gregaria whether compass cells change their activity when the animal experiences large-field visual motion or when the animal is…

Toward a Mechanistic Understanding of Color Vision in Insects.

Many visual animals exploit spectral information for seeking food and mates, for identifying preys and predators, and for navigation. Animal … ct behaviors involving "true color vision" and "wavelength-specific behaviors," especially in bees, butterflies, and flies. We include examples of high-order color vision, such as color contrast and constancy, which are shared by vertebrates. We focus on Drosophila studies that identified neuronal correlates of color vision and innate spectral preferences. We …

Emergence phenology, uncertainty, and the evolution of migratory behavior in Anax junius (Odonata: Aeshnidae).

Mass migrations by Odonata, although less studied than those of Monarch butterflies and plague locusts, have provoked comment and study for many years. Relatively recently, increasing interest in dragonflies, supported by new technologies, has resulted in more detailed knowledge of the species involved, behavioral mechanisms, and geographic extent. In this paper we examine, in four independent but complementary studies, how larval habitat and emergence phenology interact with climate to shape the evolution of migratory strategy in Anax junius, a common species throughout much of the eastern Un…

Structural mouthpart interaction evolved already in the earliest lineages of insects.

In butterflies, bees, flies and true bugs specific mouthparts are in close contact or even fused to enable piercing, sucking or sponging of particular food sources. The common phenomenon behind these mouthpart types is a complex composed of several consecutive mouthparts which structurally interact during food uptake. The single mouthparts are thus only functional in conjunction with other adjacent mouthparts, which is fundamentally different to biting-chewing. It is, however, unclear when structural mouthpart interaction (SMI) evolved since this principle obviously occurred multiple times ind…

Resect or Retain Bone Fragments in Children and Teenagers with Severe Open Fractures?: A Case Report.

CASE: A 14-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car and encountered similar bilateral Gustilo IIIB open tibial fractures. The right tibial fracture involved a large borderline vital butterfly fragment without periosteal contact, which was retained and proceeded to sufficient healing within 12 weeks. The left tibial fracture was treated according to the principles for the treatment of severe open fractures in adults, involving resection of devitalized fragments and bone transport, and healed within 15 months. CONCLUSIONS: Teenagers do possess larger bone healing potential than adults. Therefore, a

Unexpected differences in the reactivity between the phosphorus and arsenic derivatives [(CpBIGFe)2(μ,η4:4-E4)] (E = P and As).

Different reaction pathways were determined between thermolysis and photolysis reactions of the butterfly complex [{CpBIGFe(CO)2}2(μ,η1:1-As4)] (1b). The thermolysis leads to novel arsenic-rich compounds [(CpBIGFe)2(μ,η4:4-As4)] (2b), [(CpBIGFe)3(μ3,η4:4:4-As6)] (4) and [CpBIGFe(η5-As5)] (5), whereas the photolysis of [{CpBIGFe(CO)2}2(μ,η1:1-E4)] (1a: E = P; 1b: E = As) exclusively results in the decarbonylation products [(CpBIGFe)2(μ,η4:4-P4)] (2a), 2b and [(CpBIGFe)(μ,η4:1-As4)(CpBIGFe(CO)2)] (3). The E4 complexes 2a and 2b show unique structural differences in the solid state despite their

Alagille Syndrome: An Overview.

Alagille syndrome (AGS) is a highly complex, multisystem, autosomal dominant disorder that is caused by a defect in the Notch signaling pathway. This syndrome mainly affects the liver, causing significant cholestasis, which is caused by a paucity of intrahepatic bile ducts. There can be cardiac involvement, including, but not limited to, pulmonary stenosis and tetralogy of Fallot. Patients can also present with butterfly vertebra, ocular issues, and vascular events. Because this syndrome follows an autosomal dominant inheritance, it can have variable expression even in the same family line. Fo

Characterization of a Dinuclear Copper(II) Complex and Its Fleeting Mixed-Valent Copper(II)/Copper(III) Counterpart.

The synthesis of a dinuclear copper(II) complex, supported by a 1,3-diamino-2-propanol-based tetraamide ligand, is reported. Structural properties in the solid state and in solution, by means of XRD analysis and NMR spectroscopy, respectively, provide evidence of a highly flexible complex that can display several conformations, leading to the image of the wings of a butterfly. The complex was fully characterized and the redox properties were investigated. Room-temperature spectro-electrochemistry was used to monitor the formation of a metastable mono-oxidized product that displayed an absorpti

Magnetic coil suppression of visual perception at an extracalcarine site.

Perception of extrafoveal visual targets can be suppressed by magnetic stimulation over the occipital lobes, but the site of interference for this and similar phenomena has not been well defined. We modified a previously used technique to determine the locus of magnetic activation. Using butterfly stimulus coils of different sizes and electric field profiles, we determined a scalp position of minimum threshold and a level of stimulator output that produced 50% error rates for each coil. Intersection of the corresponding electric field profiles in air and in a saline model head was similar and

[Surgical management of congenital tracheal stenosis].

A six month old infant with dextrocardia, butterfly vertebrae and oesophageal atresia type I is reported. After surgical repair, she developed respiratory distress, needing ventilatory support. The bronchoscopy and bronchography demonstrated segmental tracheal stenosis. A resection of the stenotic segment was performed, and tracheal reconstruction with terminoterminal anastomosis. After a period of clinical improvement, respiratory distress came back and reestenosis was ascertained locating its level on the anastomosis. Three sessions of balloon dilation were ineffective and because that it's

Heredofamilial syndrome of spastic paraplegia, dysarthria and cutaneous lesions in ive siblings.

Five children, three sisters and two brothers aged between three months and 12 years, are described. They all developed a facial desquamating rash of butterfly distribution at the age of about two months, and motor retardation which later was characterized by spasticity, predominantly affecting the lower limbs. The three children who were old enough for speech to be tested had dysarthria. There was no family history of neurological disease, nor was there consanguinity among the parents or grandparents. EEGs were diffusely abnormal in four of the five children, but did not show any specific or

Postural balance and oculomotor control are influenced by neck kinaesthetic functions in elite ice hockey players.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that neck kinaesthetic awareness plays an important role in oculomotor and balance control, however the relationship has not been studied in athletes. As performance in ice hockey demands visual perception acuity during skating, while constantly shifting between unilateral and bilateral stances in sports specific posture more in-depth relationship should be studied. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the relationship between neck kinaesthetic awareness, postural balance and eye movement control in professional ice hockey players and non-trained individuals? METHODS: In

The coordination chemistry of 2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene.

A review of the coordination chemistry of 2,2'-bis-p-tBu-calix[4]arene (H8bisTBC[4]) reveals thirteen published structures, seven of which are homometallic complexes of manganese (×5) and copper (×2), and six which are heterometallic 3d-4f (4 × Mn-Gd, 1 × Fe-Gd and 1 × Cu-Tb). In the majority of cases the disposition of the inverted, fully deprotnated bisTBC[4] ligand favours the formation of [M4] butterflies, with two metals housed in the polyphenolic TBC[4] pockets and two encapsulated in the space between the pockets. The dominant structure directing ability of the ligand is reflected in th…

Sound strategies: the 65-million-year-old battle between bats and insects.

The intimate details regarding the coevolution of bats and moths have been elucidated over the past 50 years. The bat-moth story began with … oducing anti-bat sounds. Do the sounds advertise moth toxicity, similar to the bright coloration of butterflies; do they startle the bat, giving the moth a momentary advantage in their aerobatic battle; or do they jam the sonar of the bat? The answer is yes. They do all and more in different situations and in different species. Any insect that flies at night …
