The ultrastructure of lens capsule abnormalities in Alport's syndrome is reported. An anterior lens capsule from a 29-year-old patient with lenticonus who was affected by Alport's syndrome was obtained at phacoemulsification. The histopathological findings showed decreased thickness of the anterior lens capsule and there were many vertical capsular dehiscences localized at the inner part of the lens capsule. Almost every dehiscence was limited to the inner two-thirds of the capsule. One should be cautious in attempting intraocular lens implantation into the lens capsule, since the lens capsule

This study evaluates the role of the glenoid labrum and capsule in the prevention of shoulder dislocation. Fifteen shoulder joints from nine fresh cadavers were used. The labrum and capsule were cut into sections 5 mm wide, and the strength of each slice to rupture was measured. The rupture site was observed microscopically. The anterior-inferior portion was the weakest, with a mean force necessary to cause rupture of 3.84 +/- 1.00 kg/5 mm. The rupture site was the portion of the labrum close to the cartilage of the glenoid. Histologic structure and degenerative changes of the labrum did not d

In vitro studies indicate that encapsulated cryptococci are among the most powerful particulate activators of the complement system reported to date. The capsule itself is the site at which activation occurs. Activation occurs solely via the alternative complement pathway. Initiation occurs at apparently random focal sites in the capsule that expand through alternative pathway amplification to fill the capsule with C3 fragments. The C3 fragments are rapidly converted to iC3b, suggesting that phagocyte receptors for iC3b will be important in phagocytosis of the yeast. There is abundant evidence

Quantum-type bone remodeling was studied in undecalcified temporal bones and long bone specimens from adult mongrel dogs by means of combined microradiography, osteofluorochrome labeling, and osteoid staining. The overall turnover rate of capsular bone was estimated to be low compared to that of extracapsular compact bone. Evolving secondary osteons were distributed centrifugally relative to the perilymphatic space. Moreover, a zone of bone tissue enclosing perilymphatic spaces was found completely devoid of evolving secondary osteons. Throughout the otic capsule, segmentary perivascular foci

The lateral capsular sign is a simple radiographic finding visible on routine anteroposterior knee x-ray near the tibial articular surface at the lateral point of the lateral tibial plateau. The lateral capsular sign is a flake of bone superior and posterior to the insertion of the iliotibial tract, and represents an avulsion of the meniscotibial portion of the lateral capsular ligament. A positive lateral capsular sign implies disruption of the lateral capsule and a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. These findings are illustrated by clinical examples.

Three Hispanic patients at our institution developed extragastrointestinal Salmonella arizona infection associated with the ingestion of rattlesnake capsules. All patients had underlying chronic medical illnesses, including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and congestive heart failure. Rattlesnake capsules were obtained from both local pharmacies and patients. Salmonella arizona, as well as various other enteric organisms, was grown on cultures obtained from all capsules tested. Review of the literature disclosed three additional cases of extragastrointesti…

To investigate whether otosclerotic foci in the bony capsule of the cochlea and labyrinth can be demonstrated by high-resolution computed tomography, CT images from 31 patients suspected of having cochlear otosclerosis were submitted to a retrospective analysis. Fourteen of the patients had a clinically confirmed otosclerosis associated with an advanced mixed hearing loss. In four of these cases, fresh otospongiotic foci were detected in the bone of the cochlear capsule, while older otosclerotic foci were not demonstrated. In fifteen patients with progressive, purely sensorineural hearing loss

Lenses were pulled from rabbit and human eyes with a Verhoeff forceps suspended from a pulley. One human lens capsule ruptured with 10 gm and one with 14 gm. Eight human lenses were pulled out intact with 10 to 18 gm. One rabbit lens capsule ruptured with 18 gm and one with 20 gm. Eight rabbit lenses were pulled out intact with 12 to 24 gm. The cryoprobe on the pulley did not rupture any lenses. Thirty grams of counter pressure reduced the pull required to extract rabbit lenses by 50%. Weights were added to a Verhoeff forceps suspended from a rabbit lens supported by a lens loop. One lens was

A case of bilateral lobar pneumonia due to Crytococcus neoformans is presented. The capsule-deficient fungal organisms within tissue were suggestive of Histoplasma capsulatum. Cultures grew Cryptococcus neoformans and there was cryptococcal antigen in the serum. Pulmonary cryptococcosis and the occurrence of unencapsulated cryptococci are reviewed. The important role both culture and the latex agglutination test for cryptococcal antigen play in the differential diagnosis of systemic fungal infections with over-lapping histopathology are discussed.

When the water permeability of the lens capsule of a group containing all types of cataractous lenses is compared with a group of transparent lenses matched for age, there is no significant difference in permeability between the groups. If however, only those cataracts are selected which show changes in the cortex, namely, cuneiform opacities or 'water clefts', then the correlation between the water content of the cortex of these lenses and the permeability of their capsules is significant.

A disabling decrease in range of motion may be a sequelae of ankle trauma. This complication can result from secondary degenerative joint disease, osteochondrial fractures with loose bodies, or posttraumatic adhesive capsulitis. The latter entity is well recognized as a complication of shoulder injuries but is rarely described in other joints. Since adhesive capsulitis produces no specific plain film findings, the confirmation of this diagnosis depends on the usage of a contrast study. It is only recently that ankle arthrography has been utilized to differentiate between the various causes of

The phagocytosis of capsulated vegetative cells of Bacillus anthracis in the mouse spleen was studied by thin sectioning techniques of electron microscopy. Mice were injected with autoclaved suspensions of capsulated and noncapsulated vegetative cells via the tail vein. The animals were killed 5, 10, and 30 min and 4 hr postinjection, with the central portion of the spleen being removed and procssed for electron microscopy. Fixation was with 2% KMnO(4) for 2 hr. Results of this study indicated that phagocytosis of autoclaved, capsulated anthrax bacilli was through the normal phagocytic process

Objective: To evaluate pharmacokinetics of viloxazine extended-release (ER) in breast milk and plasma of healthy lactating women and calculate potential infant exposure. Methods: Healthy lactating women (N=15), who were ≥12 weeks postpartum, received viloxazine ER 600 mg/d (the maximum recommended adult dose, given as 3x200 mg capsules) for 3 days at the same time each morning. Pharmacokinetic parameters describing the timing and amount of viloxazine in plasma and breast milk were measured based on samples collected predose and for 24 hours postdose on Day 3.Measures of potential infant exposu…

Calcium alginate hydrogels are widely used for microbial encapsulation, yet their role in regulating bacteria-polysaccharide interfaces under acidic sulfate conditions remains unclear. Here, calcium alginate hydrogel capsules (SAC) were used to encapsulate a functional sulfate-reducing consortium and evaluate its performance in acidic sulfate-containing water. At pH 4, SAC maintained live-cell densities 147-185 times higher than those of free cells and achieved higher sulfate removal rates on days 7 and 14 (19.9% and 21.3%) than free cells (3.7% and 10.0%). Inactivated SAC showed limited sulfa…
