MRI findings of the normal and diseased trigeminal nerve ganglion and branches: a pictorial review.

The trigeminal nerve is the largest cranial nerve with both a sensory and motor function. MRI is an excellent technique to evaluate the trigeminal nerve. We report the MRI findings and illustrate the normal and diseased trigeminal nerve at Meckel's cave, the cavernous sinus, the skull base foramina, the pterygopalatine fossa and the peripheral branches.

Neurinoma of the trigeminal root and atypical trigeminal neuralgia: their commonality.

Two cases of very small trigeminal neurinomas arising proximal to Meckel's cave are presented. We believe that the overlap of the symptoms and signs of these tumors with those of atypical trigeminal neuralgia strengthens the concept of the latter entity also being due to compression of the trigeminal nerve solely within the posterior fossa.

Arthropod Envenomation in North America.

Arthropods (phylum Arthopoda) account for a higher percentage of morbidity and mortality to humans than do mammalian bites, snake bites, or marine envenomation. They are ubiquitous in domestic dwellings, caves, and campsites and in wilderness settings such as deserts, forests, and lakes. Although arthropods are most intrusive during warmer months, many are active throughout the winter, particularly indoors. Arthropods are also nocturnal and often bite unsuspecting victims while they are sleeping. Encounters with humans are generally defensive, accidental, or reactive. An individual stung by an…

Cryptic variation in morphological evolution: HSP90 as a capacitor for loss of eyes in cavefish.

In the process of morphological evolution, the extent to which cryptic, preexisting variation provides a substrate for natural selection has been controversial. We provide evidence that heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) phenotypically masks standing eye-size variation in surface populations of the cavefish Astyanax mexicanus. This variation is exposed by HSP90 inhibition and can be selected for, ultimately yielding a reduced-eye phenotype even in the presence of full HSP90 activity. Raising surface fish under conditions found in caves taxes the HSP90 system, unmasking the same phenotypic variation…

Geographical distribution of genetic polymorphism of the pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum isolated from infected bats, captured in a central zone of Mexico.

Fourteen Histoplasma capsulatum isolates recovered from infected bats captured in Mexican caves and two human H. capsulatum reference strains were analyzed using random amplification of polymorphic DNA PCR-based and partial DNA sequences of four genes. Cluster analysis of random amplification of polymorphic DNA-patterns revealed differences for two H. capsulatum isolates of one migratory bat Tadarida brasiliensis. Three groups were identified by distance and maximum-parsimony analyses of arf, H-anti, ole, and tub1 H. capsulatum genes. Group I included most isolates from infected bats and one c…

Retrospective serological study of histoplasmosis in Mexico.

Mycotic immunodiagnosis was performed in 325 patients with clinical evidence of systemic mycoses, over a 5-year period, from different hospi … -two came from endemic histoplasmosis zones of the country and most of them acquired the disease in caves or uninhabited houses. The diagnosis of histoplasmosis should be based on reliable laboratory data which could raise more significant information of its incidence in Mexico.

Underwater nasal decongestant use: a novel approach to middle ear equalization.

Middle ear barotrauma is the most common diving-related injury. It is estimated to occur in more than 50% of experienced divers. Although divers learn how to effectively equalize their ears with various maneuvers, airway congestion may impede the ability to equalize the middle ear space via the Eustachian tube. In this case, one may have to avoid diving or abort a dive due to inability to descend. If difficulty with middle ear equalization occurs during the bottom phase of the dive, which may transpire during a multilevel cave or wreck dive, a diver may need to descend before he can exit the w

Histiocytic sarcoma of the cavernous sinus: case report and literature review.

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of hematopoietic origin composed of cells showing morphologic and immunophenotypic evidence of histiocytic differentiation. We describe the 2nd case of primary histiocytic sarcoma of the cavernous sinus/Meckel's cave, and the 8th case involving the CNS. A 61-year-old Caucasian man presented with numbness on the entire left side of his face, shooting pain in the left frontal region, and headaches. Imaging revealed an enhancing extra axial soft tissue mass located in the left cavernous sinus and left Meckel's cave. Diagnosis was established throug

New records of ticks infesting bats in Brazil, with observations on the first nymphal stage of Ornithodoros hasei.

In Brazil, at least 14 species of soft ticks (Argasidae) are associated with bats. While Ornithodoros hasei seems to be abundant among foliage-roosting bats, other groups of ticks are found exclusively inside caves. In this paper, noteworthy records of soft ticks infesting bats are documented in new localities from Bahia, Pernambuco, Piauí, and Rondônia states. Out of 201 bats examined, 25 were infested by 152 ticks belonging to seven taxa: Ornithodoros cavernicolous, O. hasei, Ornithodoros marinkellei, Ornithodoros cf. fonsecai, Ornithodoros cf. clarki, Antricola sp., and Nothoaspis amazonien…

The PorcupineHystrix (Acanthion) vinogradovi (Rodentia, Hystricidae) from the Early Pleistocene Taurida Locality in Crimea.

The remains of porcupines from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida karstic cave discovered in 2018 in central Crimea (Zuya village, Belogorsk district) are referred to Hystrix (Acanthion) vinogradovi Argyropulo, 1941. This species is quite common for the Pleistocene of Eurasia. In Crimea, several isolated teeth of this species were described from the Lower Pleistocene of Tarkhankut previously.

Surgical management of petrous apex trigeminal nerve herniation causing trigeminal neuralgia with long-term outcome: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Petrous apex cephaloceles (PACs) are infrequent lesions mostly diagnosed as incidental findings. Rare cases may manifest as trigeminal neuralgia (TN). OBSERVATIONS: A 51-year-old female presented with a 19-year history of TN. Investigative imaging revealed herniation of the trigeminal nerve into Meckel's cave through a right-sided petrous apex defect. The patient underwent a right preauricular middle cranial fossa craniotomy and subtemporal extradural approach to access Meckel's cave. The nerve was released and repositioned, and a fat graft was used to obliterate the petrous apex

Clinical and Radiologic Findings in Children with Anomalous Pontine Cranial Nerves.

We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiologic findings in 17 children with an aberrant cisternal cranial nerve 7 (CN7), and found that these patients had additional anomalies involving other pontine cranial nerves (CNs). The hallmark imaging feature identified in all patients was an aberrant cisternal segment of an enlarged-appearing CN7. The abnormal nerve coursed anteriorly toward the Gasserian ganglion, where it fanned out toward the internal auditory canal, Meckel cave, or both. This finding was accompanied by a small cisternal CN5, which often had a lateral bowed appearance. CN5

Trochlear Nerve Repair during Retrosigmoid Suprameatal Approach for Petrotentorial Meningioma: Operative Video.

When operating on difficult skull base lesions, it is essential to be able to handle unexpected intraoperative findings or troubles, while achieving maximal lesion removal and minimal functional deficit. This video demonstrates a case of trochlear nerve repair that was performed during the retrosigmoid suprameatal approach for treatment of a petrotentorial meningioma, extending into the Meckel's cave. The patient is a 47-year-old woman with a right petrotentorial meningioma, extending into the Meckel's cave. The retrosigmoid suprameatal approach was performed with preservation of the superior

In situ observations on the dentition and oral cavity of the Neanderthal skeleton from Altamura (Italy).

The Neanderthal specimen from Lamalunga Cave, near Altamura (Apulia, Italy), was discovered during a speleological survey in 1993. The specimen is one of the most complete fossil hominins in Europe and its state of preservation is exceptional, although it is stuck in calcareous concretions and the bones are mostly covered by calcite depositions. Nevertheless, it is possible to carry out some observations on craniodental features that have not previously been described. In this work, we present an account of the oral cavity, made possible by the use of a videoscope, which allowed us to reach so

Compounding heterochrony shapes the salamander visual system across adaptive zones.

Transitioning between disparate environments presents new physical challenges, and metamorphosis can provide solutions. The life cycles of most amphibians involve an aquatic-to-terrestrial transition and concomitant metamorphosis, but shifts in developmental timing (heterochrony) have also produced a wide variety of aquatic-only and terrestrial-only forms. Thyroid hormone (TH) signalling can govern the timing of tissue transformation and may be a key mechanism behind the relationship between development and diversification of some metamorphic traits. Here, we show that life cycle mode and cave

Daily rhythms of locomotor activity and transcript levels of non-visual opsins in the brain of the blind Mexican cavefish (Astyanax mexicanus).

Most organisms possess endogenous circadian clocks that synchronise their physiology and behaviour with environmental cycles, with the light-dark (LD) cycle being the most potent synchronising signal. Consequently, it can be hypothesised that animals that have evolved in the dark, as in caves or deep sea, may no longer possess a functional light-entrained biological clock. In this research, the blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus was selected as a model organism to investigate the potential effects of daily light conditions on the circadian timekeeping mechanisms. First, we focused on describing…

Dual roles of the retinal pigment epithelium and lens in cavefish eye degeneration.

Astyanax mexicanus consists of two forms, a sighted surface dwelling form (surface fish) and a blind cave-dwelling form (cavefish). Embryonic eyes are initially formed in cavefish but they are subsequently arrested in growth and degenerate during larval development. Previous lens transplantation studies have shown that the lens plays a central role in cavefish eye loss. However, several lines of evidence suggest that additional factors, such as the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), which is morphologically altered in cavefish, could also be involved in the eye regression process. To explore th

Severe histoplasmosis in travelers to Nicaragua.

We investigated an outbreak of unexpectedly severe histoplasmosis among 14 healthy adventure travelers from the United States who visited a bat-infested cave in Nicaragua. Although histoplasmosis has rarely been reported to cause serious illness among travelers, this outbreak demonstrates that cases may be severe among travelers, even young, healthy persons.
