Cellulose-Binding Module-Mediated Immobilization of l-Arabinose Isomerase for Reusable d-Tagatose Production.

The development of stable and recyclable biocatalysts is vital for sustainable bioprocessing. In this study, we demonstrated fusion of l-arabinose isomerase from Thermotoga neapolitana (TnAI) with a cellulose-binding module (CBM) to facilitate direct, noncovalent immobilization on cellulose fibers for the biocatalytic transformation of d-galactose to d-tagatose. The impact of His-tag positioning on TnAI activity and quaternary structure was initially assessed, revealing that the C-terminal tag caused enzyme aggregation and loss of activity. In contrast, the N-terminal His-tag preserved the hex…

Hydrogel electrolytes regulated by hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose for zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors.

The practical application of zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHSCs) is limited by the trade-off between interfacial stability and ion transport in aqueous electrolytes. Herein, two cellulose ethers with distinct substituent structures, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), were introduced as regulatory components to construct composite hydrogel electrolytes, denoted PASMCE and PASECE, respectively. Their effects on water states, network morphology, ion transport, and electrochemical behavior were comparatively investigated. HPMC, containing relatively hydroph…

Long-Afterglow Materials Enabled by the Confinement Effect of Cellulose Nanocrystals Cholesteric Liquid Crystals.

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is highly sought after for optical sensing and encryption, but is constrained by triplet exciton quenching. This challenge is addressed by employing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), specifically carboxylated CNC, as a cholesteric host and coronene tetracarboxylate (CS) as a phosphorescent guest. The self-assembled CNC matrix provides a rigid, anisotropic microenvironment through nanorod ordering and hydrogen bonding with CS, effectively suppressing non-radiative relaxation. Systematic CS loading (0.3-5 wt%) reveals optimal performance at 1 wt% (lifetime: 1.7…

Dual cross-linked cellulose-based hydrogel enables antibacterial-antioxidant synergy for diabetic wound healing.

Diabetic wounds struggle to self-heal due to excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), persistent microbial infection, and ineffective exudate management. Current wound dressings remain inadequate for effectively modulating this complex pathophysiological microenvironment. Herein, using cotton-derived cellulose and hyaluronic acid as raw materials, we developed a dual-crosslinked hydrogel through a facile and rapid photo-crosslinking process (<10 s), allowing it to be molded into any desired shape to fit irregular wounds. Benefiting from a dynamic and robust dual-crosslinked net…

Upcycling boiler fuel rice-husk waste: a sustainable cellulose-clay nanocomposite for lead remediation.

A novel approach for the utilization of a boiler fuel rice-husk silica waste-based cellulose-clay nanocomposite (CCN) has been developed for the first time, and it has been assessed as a green adsorbent for the removal of Pb2+ from water. The addition of cellulose, which is rich in hydroxyl groups, along with the layered clay, enhanced the surface reactivity, porosity, and structural stability of the resulting composite. The CCN was characterized through a variety of methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), s…

Surface charge regulated self-assembly and interfacial adhesion mechanisms of cellulose and chitin nanofibers.

This study investigates how charged-group polarity, nanofiber morphology, substrate surface chemistry, and evaporation-assisted assembly jointly regulate the interfacial adhesion of cellulose and chitin nanofibers. Four nanofibers with amino or carboxyl groups were prepared, with charged-group densities of 0.50-1.46 mmol/g. Contact angle and XPS analyses revealed hydroxylated siloxane/silanol-rich glass and native oxide/hydroxide-covered copper surfaces. Statistical lap-shear tests showed substrate-dependent adhesion: DEChN reached 2.57 ± 0.05 MPa and 0.10 ± 0.02 MJ/m3 on glass, whereas TOCN r…

Free nitrous acid-ultrasound pretreatment enhances cellulose conversion by complementary physical and chemical deconstruction.

Biorefining of cellulosic biomass has emerged as a promising strategy to address the global energy crisis and advance second-generation biofuel production. To overcome the inherent structural recalcitrance of cellulose, this study proposes a novel combined pretreatment strategy using free nitrous acid (FNA) and ultrasound (US) and systematically elucidates its underlying mechanisms. While US and FNA pretreatment individually improved substrate digestibility, their combination (FNA + US) produced the greatest enhancement, with the final total organic carbon concentration and cellulose conversio…

High-Efficiency Carboxymethylation Achieved by Enhancing Hydroxyl Accessibility Through Glycerol Pretreatment of Bacterial Cellulose.

Due to its dense crystalline structure and extensive hydrogen bonding network, cellulose exhibits limited reactive accessibility and reactivity, which severely restricts the reaction efficiency, degree of substitution, and uniformity of cellulose modifications such as carboxymethylation. To overcome these limitations, this study developed a novel glycerol-based pretreatment strategy to disrupt the hydrogen bonding network of bacterial cellulose (BC), thereby improving its reactive accessibility. The results confirmed that glycerol pretreatment significantly enhanced the reactivity of BC. The r…

Sustainable fluorescent elastomers derived from cellulose, coumarin, and plant oil with tunable mechanical performance.

The development of sustainable functional materials from renewable resources is a critical pursuit in modern materials science. In this work, we report a novel class of sustainable fluorescent elastomers fabricated by grafting a coumarin derivative, 7-acryloyloxy-4-methylcoumarin (AMC), as the fluorescent chromophores and a plant oil-based polymerizable monomer, lauryl acrylate (LA), from cellulose backbone via homogeneous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. In this architecture, the rigid cellulose acts as the backbone, LA plays the role of soft segments to…

Acetic acid mediates pectin structural remodeling to enhance cellulose binding in potato cell wall.

This study investigates how acetic acid pretreatment modifies pectin structure and its interaction mechanism with cellulose to regulate textural integrity of potato slices (Solanum tuberosum L.) during thermal processing. Potato slices were pretreated with distilled water and acetic acid, and changes in firmness, sugar composition and cell wall architecture were evaluated. Chelate soluble pectin was extracted, purified and characterized by galacturonic acid content, monosaccharide composition and UV-vis analysis. Acetic acid treated samples retained higher firmness and mitigated heat induced d…

Bacterial Cellulose Membranes Functionalized with In Situ Green-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles for Antibacterial Applications.

This study demonstrates how synthesis conditions and bacterial cellulose (BC) functionalization influence the physicochemical properties and antibacterial performance of BC membranes containing green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Mint and avocado-seed extracts enabled AgNP formation in aqueous media but differed in composition. UV-Vis screening across pH and temperature revealed inefficient synthesis at acidic pH, whereas higher temperatures produced broader localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands. Neutral conditions generated the most intense and narrow LSPR signals. Unde…

Cellulose nanofibers-stabilized molybdenum disulfide nanosheets enhanced tough hydrogel for highly efficient marine antifouling.

Marine biofouling poses a serious safety threat and significant economic losses to offshore infrastructure. Although hydrogels have made considerable progress in marine antifouling, developing antifouling hydrogels that combine high strength and efficiency remains a challenge. In this study, a highly tough three-dimensional network composite hydrogel was designed by introducing cellulose nanofibers (CNF)-functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets (MoS2@CNF). Herein, cellulose nanofibers are employed as a green and effective exfoliation assistant to fabricate well-dispersed MoS₂@CNF …

Cellulose-Based Hydrogels for Chronic Wound Healing: Bridging Biomaterial Design and Clinical Unmet Needs.

Chronic wounds remain a persistent clinical challenge, trapped in a cycle of inflammation, infection, and impaired healing. While traditional dressings offer basic protection, they fail to address the complex pathophysiology of non-healing wounds. This review critically examines cellulose-based hydrogels as next-generation therapeutic platforms, analyzing their structure-property relationships, biofunctionalization strategies, and stimuli-responsive capabilities. We synthesize recent advances in antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative hydrogels, highlighting how cellulose's inhe…

Real-time determination of the induced optical anisotropy in dry-jet wet spun cellulose.

Real-time monitoring provides valuable information for optimizing fiber spinning conditions. This work combines two self-developed devices, a monofilament dry-jet wet spinning system and an optical measuring device. The measuring protocol was validated and applied to capture the evolution of cellulose fibers during the Ioncell® process. Seven representative points were chosen to evaluate changes in diameter, birefringence and the mass transfer between the filament and the coagulation bath. When exiting the spinneret, the filament shows die swell in the air gap where axial strain induces polyme…

Facile fabrication of carboxymethyl cellulose film via crosslinking approach for decolorization of cationic dyes.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), an economical and eco-friendly anionic polymer, exhibits strong adsorption capacity toward cationic metals and dyes. Nevertheless, due to weak intermolecular interactions within the biopolymer chains, the practical application of these materials is frequently constrained by their poor mechanical strength and high aqueous solubility. Here, an efficient film adsorbent, primarily composed of CMC, was readily fabricated via a crosslinking strategy employing ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a non-toxic crosslinking agent, effectively addressing these challen…

Pilot-scale mechanical production of cellulose nanofibrils: Energy-structure trade-offs during disc refining.

Sustainable, chemical-free production of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) remains constrained by high mechanical energy demand during fibrillation. In this study, pilot-scale disc refining of bleached pine kraft (BPK) pulp was performed under water-only conditions (2 wt% consistency) using a Regmed MD-3000 refiner to evaluate the relationship between plate gaps, energy consumption, fibrillation behaviour, and suspension properties. The disc gap was progressively reduced from 10 mm to 0.2 mm in closed-loop recirculation mode. Specific energy consumption increased with decreasing gap, reaching an ef…
