Structure of the brachial plexus root and adjacent regions displayed by ultrasound imaging.

Brachial plexuses of 110 healthy volunteers were examined using high resolution color Doppler ultrasound. Ultrasonic characteristics and anatomic variation in the intervertebral foramen, interscalene, supraclavicular and infraclavicular, as well as the axillary brachial plexus were investigated. Results confirmed that the normal brachial plexus on cross section exhibited round or elliptic hypoechoic texture. Longitudinal section imaging showed many parallel linear hypo-moderate echoes, with hypo-echo. The transverse processes of the seventh cervical vertebra, the scalene space, the subclavian

An unusual atlanto-axial dislocation. Case report.

A case is presented in which the patient sustained a complete dislocation of the odontoid process in front of the anterior arch of the first cervical vertebra. There was no fracture of the arch of C-1 vertebra. The patient was treated successfully by trans-oral excision of the odontoid process and the anterior arch of C-1. Twenty days later the patient's spine was stabilized posteriorly at C-1 through C-3 with wire and methyl-methacrylate.

Expression and purification of intact and functional soybean (Glycine max) seed ferritin complex in Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Injuries of the upper cervical spine are a major cause of morbidity and mortality due to associated spinal cord and head injuries. The injury patterns of the upper cervical spine are numerous, and the neurologic sequelae are diverse. The axis (C2) is the most commonly fractured vertebra in the upper cervical spine; its unique anatomy and architecture pose difficulties in the diagnosis and the management of its fractures. METHODS: All cases of acute spinal injuries at Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were screened for fractures of C2 vertebrae. These

The Crocodylian proatlas functions to redistribute venous blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

The proatlas, a bone located between the skull and the neural spines of the cervical vertebrae, is best known from reptiles. Most previous studies of the proatlas have centered on its developmental, debating the relationship between the proatlas and the cervical neural arches. The present study was intended as a description of the proatlas in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and an experimental test of its hypothesized role in venous blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) distribution. In Alligator, the proatlas is chevron-shaped; ventrally it has a loose connection to the dors…

Atypical Course of Vertebral Artery Outside the Cervical Spine: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: The vertebral arteries are branches of the subclavian arteries supply blood to the posterior part of the encephalon, forming vertebrobasilar circulation. Disorders of vertebrobasilar circulation have significant clinical implications. Symptoms of these disorders include dizziness, vomiting, collapse, vision and cerebellar disorders. The vertebral artery usually ascends in the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae to reach the posterior cranial cavity by entering the magnum foramen. Although most often the vertebral artery enters the C6 transverse process, anatomic variation…

Skull base or cervical vertebral osteomyelitis following chemoradiotherapy for pharyngeal carcinoma: A serious but treatable complication.

Osteomyelitis, infection of the bone and marrow, following high dose (chemo-)radiotherapy for head and neck cancer is uncommon and rarely seen in the cervical spine or temporal bone. Due to its proximity to critical structures, osteomyelitis in the latter regions could carry potentially important consequences. Furthermore, involvement near the skull base (e.g. temporal bone and high cervical vertebrae) presents unique challenges in diagnosis (especially in the differentiation from disease recurrence) and treatment, making early detection and timely intervention critical. In this report, we des…

T2 radiculopathy: A differential screen for upper extremity radicular pain.

Radicular pain in the upper extremity can have a cervical origin terminating at the cervicothoracic junction (C8, T1). Review of the literature suggests cutaneous representations of T2 nerve root to the axilla, posteromedial arm, and lateral forearm, suggesting yet another source of upper extremity radicular pain. A 53-year-old female experienced insidious right upper thoracic pain radiating into the right axilla, upper arm, and lateral forearm (10/10 numerical pain rating scale (NPRS)) of 1-week duration. Medical referral suggested cervical radiculopathy, however, cervical spine examination w

Adverse Fetal and Neonatal Outcome and an Abnormal Vertebral Pattern: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: The human vertebral column has a stable number of vertebrae and ribs, which is presumably the result of evolutionary selection. An association between an abnormal vertebral pattern, especially in the cervical region, and congenital anomalies or adverse fetal outcome has been reported. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the current literature concerning an abnormal vertebral pattern and prevalence of cervical ribs in healthy subjects and in subjects with adverse outcome. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Scientific databases were searched systematically. Studies assessing the numb

Regionalization of axial skeleton in the lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri (Dipnoi).

Differentiation of the axial skeleton into distinct regions, once thought to be characteristic of the Tetrapoda, also occurs in the actinopt … us. A recognizable cervical region in the tetrapod vertebral column, as in zebrafish, suggests that cervical vertebrae are not incorporated into the skull but maintained as distinct elements of the column, representing an important shift in relative developmental timing and the influence of heterochrony in this region during the fish-tetrapod transition.

Dogs with severe tracheal flattening exhibit lower degrees of left lateralization of the cervical esophagus.

Herein, we investigated the positional relationship between the cervical esophagus and trachea using computed tomography (CT) images in dogs with tracheal flattening. From these CT images, the ratio of the tracheal diameters in the short (vertical) and long (horizontal) axes of the tracheal ring (S/L ratio) and the vertebra-trachea-esophagus (VTE) angle were measured at the point from the 3rd cervical (C3) to the 3rd thoracic vertebra (T3) levels. The VTE angle in dogs with tracheal flattening with an S/L ratio under 0.24 tended to be smaller than the angles at the level from C4 to T2 in dogs

Cervical vertebral trabecular bone mineral density in Great Danes with and without osseous-associated cervical spondylomyelopathy.

BACKGROUND: Great Danes (GDs) with osseous-associated cervical spondylomyelopathy (CSM) have osteoarthritis (OA) of the cervical vertebrae. OA is often associated with increases in bone mineral density (BMD) in people and dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To compare the trabecular BMD of the cervical vertebrae between clinically normal (control) GDs and GDs with osseous-associated CSM by using computed tomography (CT). We hypothesized that the vertebral trabecular BMD of CSM-affected GDs would be higher than that of control GDs. ANIMALS: Client-owned GDs: 12 controls, 10 CSM affected. METHODS: P…

Pitfalls of anterior cervical fusion using titanium mesh and local autograft.

Cervical fusion cages have been developed to provide an anterior structural support without harvesting tricortical iliac bone. Limited numbers of investigations have focused on pitfalls of anterior cervical fusion using cage implants. The objective of this study is to report clinical results and implant-related complications in anterior cervical fusion using titanium mesh and anterior plating. Twenty-four cases with anterior cervical fusion using a titanium mesh with local autograft and anterior plating were reviewed. One-level fusion was performed in 7 cases, and 17 patients underwent two-lev

Disc prolapse and cord contusion in a case of Klippel-Feil syndrome following minor trauma.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is defined as congenital fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae and patients with KFS are frequently asymptomatic. However, these patients are especially prone to cervical cord injury after a minor fall or a major traumatic episode. We report an unusual case of KFS where the patient had disc prolapse between two Klippel-Feil segments and discuss the difficulties in the management of this case.

New Classification for Clinically Symptomatic Adjacent Segment Pathology in Cervical Disc Disease.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical adjacent segment pathology (CASP) is common after cervical disc surgery. A critical examination of 320 patients operated for cervical disc prolapse revealed that CASP can also occur in patients with congenital and degenerative fusion of cervical spine. This has not been studied in depth and there is a need for a practically applicable classification of CASP. PURPOSE: To develop a new classification scheme of CASP. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: A review of the literature did not reveal a practically applicable classification incorporating the occurrence of CASP in congenital

Retrotransverse foramen of the atlas: prevalence and bony variations.

PURPOSE: To analyze the prevalence of the retrotransverse foramen (RTF) and its bony variations. METHODS: One hundred ten atlases of living adult subjects, 161 twentieth century dry adult cervical atlases and four dry adult cervical atlases from medieval skeletons were studied to detect the RTF and its abnormal bony variations. The 110 living adult subjects underwent a computed tomography study to detect the RTF. RESULTS: In the in vivo sample (n = 110; 100%), the RTF was found in four (3.6%) atlases. It was bilateral in all cases, but three (2.7%) patients showed complete RTF and the other
