OBJECTIVE: The varicella vaccine is not included in the national childhood immunization schedules in China. Varicella epidemics and outbreaks are frequently reported, and the evidence for the effectiveness of the varicella vaccine remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate varicella vaccine effectiveness in Wuxi, China.
METHODS: Varicella surveillance data were extracted from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention, and vaccination data were obtained from the Vaccination Integrated Service Management Information System of Jiangsu Province, China. Time-se

The reported incidence of varicella in Beijing from 2019 to 2021 were 63.8/100 000, 32.2/100 000 and 38.6/100 000, respectively. There were two VZV epidemics in Beijing each year, one peaked in May and the other in November. However, the first VZV epidemic almost disappeared in 2020. Among the cases involved in the varicella outbreaks in school, the proportion of the students with no history of vaccine immunization, 1 dose of immunization and 2 doses of immunization were 33.12%, 44.79% and 22.08%, respectively. The major body of VZV breakthrough cases was children aged 6-14 years (523/755, 69.

This economic evaluation assesses the cost-effectiveness and budget impact of introducing a two-dose varicella vaccine in the Russian national immunization program. A static Markov model followed a simulated 2019 Russian cohort over its lifetime and compared outcomes and costs of three varicella vaccination strategies: strategy I (doses given at 12 and 15 months of age), strategy II (doses given at 1 year and 6 years of age), and a no vaccination scenario. Inputs on age-dependent clinical pathways, associated costs, and related health outcomes were collected from national sources and published

This article presents the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendations for the use of varicella and herpes zoster vaccination from the WHO position paper on varicella and herpes zoster vaccines - June 2014, published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record [1]. This position paper summarizes the WHO position on the use of varicella and herpes zoster vaccines. The current document replaces the position paper on the use of varicella vaccines published in 1998 [2]. Footnotes to this paper provide a number of core references. In accordance with its mandate to provide guidance to Member States on

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) of childhood is a common hematologic disorder. Immune thrombocytopenic purpura is characterized by increased destruction of antibody-coated platelets in the reticuloendothelial system. In the majority of children with acute ITP, thrombocytopenia occurs within 1 to 3 weeks after an infectious disease. Immune thrombocytopenic purpura may also occur after rubella, rubeola, chickenpox, or live virus vaccination. Here we report 2 cases with acute ITP that were developed after honeybee and insect bite.

Chicken pox is a highly contagious infection, caused by the varicella zoster virus. Although generally a benign, self-limited disease, varicella may be associated with serious complications especially in adults. We present acute pancreatitis- a rare complication, in otherwise healthy patients suffering from chicken pox. The presence of pancreatitis in association with chickenpox in immunocompetent patients can influence the outcome of the latter. This interesting case will hopefully increase awareness about this complication and its fatality in chicken pox.

Varicella (chickenpox) is a common childhood illness. Most adults are immune to the virus because of previous exposure. Pregnant women who contract varicella risk complications such as pneumonia. Varicella may be transmitted from mother to fetus and could cause congenital varicella syndrome or perinatal infection. Susceptibility to varicella should be determined before pregnancy. Varicella zoster immune globulin may be considered for the mother or newborn if exposure occurs. Acyclovir may decrease the risk of maternal complications from infection.

The current monkeypox (MPX) outbreak has been declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is a zoonotic disease that has persisted in the African basin for decades but suddenly exploded into the international sphere this year. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of monkeypox, including a hypothesis of the rapid spread of the virus, its epidemiology and clinical features, a comparison with other orthopoxviruses such as chickenpox and smallpox, past and present outbreaks, and strategies for its prevention and treat…

Herpes zoster, or shingles, caused by a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, can occur in patients of any age, but is more common in older adults. Patient history is critical in reaching a diagnosis, not only to manage the outbreak effectively, but also to prevent severe complications such as dissemination of the virus into the central nervous system. This article describes recent changes in diagnostic testing, treatment, prevention, and practice guidelines as well as the approach clinicians should take when evaluating patients with herpes zoster and assessing risk for complications.

Varicella pneumonia is a potentially fatal complication of the Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes the well-known chickenpox disease of childhood. Identifying this type of pneumonia by characteristic features is important for radiologists and radiology residents. Typical manifestations of active Varicella pneumonia include diffuse pulmonary nodules, which may mimic other diseases. Healed Varicella pneumonia can present as diffuse, calcified pulmonary micronodules. We describe a case of healed Varicella pneumonia in a patient with a history of remote VZV infection.

A child with a febrile exanthema is a complex medical problem involving diagnostic challenges, epidemiological threats and a great concern for the parents and any physician, should be prepared to deal with it. Many of the classical ones (measles, rubella, chickenpox) have now a decreased incidence due to a high vaccine coverage, which makes even harder for the physician to establish an early diagnosis. To the untrained eye most of them are difficult to differentiate. Their prompt recognition is necessary in order to manage them adequately and to prevent spreading of the disease.

A 74-year-old white man presented with unilateral radicular pain extending across the left side of his chest and back. A diagnosis of postherpetic neuralgia, a sequela of herpes zoster, was made. Herpes zoster represents a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus that lies dormant in patients with past chickenpox. Risk factors for the disease include advanced age, stress, immunodeficiency, and immunosuppression. Treatment of herpes zoster entails traditional antiviral medications, while prevention may be achieved with a new prophylactic vaccine.

It is usual to consider chicken pox as a benign infectious disease with a few anterior segment ocular complications like conjunctivitis, keratitis, episcleritis, scleritis, iridocyclitis, and glaucoma. The retinal manifestations are necrotising retinitis, vitritis, neuroretinitis, and retinal detachments. We report a case of neuroretinitis following chicken pox in a 23-year-old male. The complication was resolved by treatment with oral acyclovir in combination with systemic steroids. This report highlights the necessity for fundus examination in cases of chickenpox exhibiting visual symptoms.

Two patients developed Guillain-Barré syndrome after varicella-zoster infection; a 4-year-old boy after chickenpox and a 74-year-old man after shingles. Both had decreased CD8-positive lymphocytes in the blood during the course of their illness. These cases and others reported in the literature suggest that varicella-zoster infection is a significant but rare trigger factor of Guillain-Barré syndrome. An alteration in the balance of helper and suppressor lymphocytes may be an important pathogenetic mechanism.

Rickettsialpox is a mild illness characterized by the appearance of a primary eschar at the site of a mite bite followed by fever, headache, and a papulovesicular rash. It can be confused with a variety of illnesses including several other rickettsial diseases and chickenpox. R. akari, the etiologic agent, is a rickettsia belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG) of rickettsial illnesses. In spite of significant serologic cross-reactivity with other SFG agents, there is no convincing evidence of cross-immunity to these agents after recovery from rickettsialpox. Tetracyclinie is the drug of ch…

Chickenpox, caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), presents as varicella (chickenpox) during primary infection and as herpes zoster (shingles) upon reactivation. With a high infectivity rate and transmission through airborne droplets and contact, VZV poses a significant public health challenge. While the disease is self-limiting, complications such as encephalitis and pneumonia can occur, particularly in unimmunized individuals and those with weakened immune systems. The introduction of varicella vaccination has significantly reduced incidence and complications in countries with universal…
