A comparison of rapid enzyme immunoassay tests for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis cervical infections.

Two rapid enzyme immunoassay test kits were compared with culture for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis endocervical infections. Endocervical samples for C trachomatis culture and the two enzyme immunoassay tests were evaluated from 502 county health department and Planned Parenthood patients. The prevalence of infection in this population was 12%. Sensitivity and specificity of the Abbott TestPack Chlamydia were 51.7% and 99.5%, respectively, and of the Kodak Surecell Chlamydia were 76.7% and 98.6%, respectively. The positive and negative predictive values for TestPack were 93.9% and 93.

[Chlamydia trachomatis infections in New Caledonia. Study of 1,023 patients over a 12-month period].

A study of chlamydial infections was realized in New Caledonia during a period of one year. It concerned 1,023 patients: 775 adults and 248 children. It showed the high frequency of chlamydial urethritis in the male population, chlamydial cervicitis in gynecologic patients, chlamydial pneumonia and conjunctivitis in neonates and infants. The contamination between mother and infants was demonstrated several times. This preliminary study must be completed by an epidemiological exhaustive survey in order to determine the most exposed population and to take prophylactic appropriate actions.

[A clinical evaluation of doxycycline in the treatment of genitourinary infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis].

The clinical effectiveness of doxycycline (DOXY) in the treatment of chlamydial infections was studied by giving it to 14 patients composed of 9 with nongonorrheal urethritis and 5 with cervicitis, all caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. DOXY was given in an oral dose of 100 mg twice daily for 4 to 19 days. The total dosage ranged from 800 to 3,800 mg. The overall clinical efficacy as assessed on the basis of both bacterial response and relief of subjective or objective symptoms was excellent in all of 12 evaluable patients. Two patients for whom we failed to perform postdose bacteriological exam

Diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infections by direct immunofluorescence staining of genital secretions. A multicenter trial.

Because few clinicians have access to laboratories offering cell culture confirmation of suspected Chlamydia trachomatis genital infections, we evaluated a diagnostic method in which fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal antibodies were used to directly identify C. trachomatis elementary bodies in slides made from genital secretions. Compared with culture results, the direct smear had a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 96% in 576 men, most of whom had symptoms and signs of urethritis. Among 595 women attending the same clinics, sensitivity of the direct smear for cervical infection was 89%

Influence of chlamydia infection history on tubal patency: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia infection is a known risk factor for tubal occlusion and subsequent infertility. A significant proportion of Chlamydia infections are asymptomatic, which can delay diagnosis and allow silent progression of tubal damage. Therefore, identifying a history of Chlamydia infection-even in the absence of symptoms-may help recognize women at risk of tubal involvement. In such cases, it would be justified to perform tubal patency testing to assess potential tubal and pelvic sequelae. Our purpose was to evaluate the relationship of Chlamydia IgG serology with tubal patency as deter…

A Case Report of Chlamydia psittaci Infective Endocarditis Complicated With Pneumonia.

Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci and is commonly found in birds and poultry. Human infection is uncommon, and most cases are sporadic. Infection of extrapulmonary organs by Chlamydia psittaci is extremely rare. A rare case of infective endocarditis complicated by pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci was reported, which was diagnosed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). The patient recovered after receiving appropriate anti-infective treatment. Discussion on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease based on recent literature repo

Study Models for Chlamydia trachomatis Infection of the Female Reproductive Tract.

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is a leading cause of sexually transmitted infections globally, often resulting in inflammatory disorders, ectopic pregnancies, and infertility. Studying Ct's pathogenesis remains challenging due to its unique life cycle and host-specific interactions, which require diverse experimental models. Animal studies using mouse, guinea pig, pig, and non-human primate models provide valuable insights into immune responses, hormonal influences, and disease progression. However, they face limitations in terms of translational relevance due to physiological differences, as well

Current Evidence of Maternal Infection With Chlamydia trachomatis and Preeclampsia Risk.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. Ascending C. trachomatis can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), potentially leading to subsequent infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is growing evidence implicating infections (e.g., COVID-19, cytomegalovirus) in preeclampsia etiology, a maternal hypertensive disorder and leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have investigated the impact of STIs on preeclampsia risk. In this review, we provide an overview of the

Chlamydia trachomatis infection induces ferroptosis and enhances chlamydial replication.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) has been shown to activate multiple programmed cell death pathways, which contribute significantly to host immune responses. Nevertheless, the precise molecular mechanisms by which C. trachomatis induces cell death remain poorly characterized. Ferroptosis, a recently identified form of iron-dependent, lipid peroxidation-driven regulated cell death, may represent a previously unrecognized pathway in chlamydial pathogenesis. To investigate the mechanisms underlying C. trachomatis-induced cell death, we first performed transcriptomic analysis to identify dif

Chlamydia psittaci enteric infection in an adult man: A case report.

OBJECTIVES: Psittacosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci (Cps), typically manifests as respiratory symptoms following the inhalation of aerosols from infected birds. Here, we report a case of Cps causing enteric infection in an adult man. METHODS: An atypical case of psittacosis was reported in a 62-year-old man who presented with initial symptoms of fever and severe diarrhea after consuming undercooked pigeon meat and offal. RESULTS: This patient was admitted to our hospital with the main complaints of fever and severe diarrhea for 4 days and a mild dry cough for half a day,

Infectivity of a pathogenicity-attenuated Chlamydia muridarum mutant in the genital tract.

A Chlamydia muridarum mutant designated as intrOv was evaluated as an intracellular oral vaccine vector because it can induce protection in the genital tract following oral inoculation but does not elicit genital pathology following intravaginal infection. However, the mechanism of intrOv's attenuation is unclear. Here, we report that few live organisms were recovered from vaginal swabs during the early stage of intrOv intravaginal infection in mice. At a low inoculating dose, an isogenic wild-type control strain established a productive infection, while intrOv failed to do so. Although a high

Infection of human organoids supports an intestinal niche for Chlamydia trachomatis.

Several reports suggest that intestinal tissue may be a natural niche for Chlamydia trachomatis infection and a reservoir for persistent infections in the human body. Due to the human specificity of the pathogen and the lack of suitable host models, there is limited knowledge on this topic. In our study, we modelled the course of the chlamydial infection in human primary gastrointestinal (GI) epithelial cells originating from patient-derived organoids. We show that GI cells are resistant to apical infection and C. trachomatis needs access to the basolateral membrane to establish an infection.

A retrospective study on antibacterial treatments for koalas infected with Chlamydia pecorum.

Chlamydiosis remains the leading infectious disease and is one of the key factors responsible for the dramatic reduction of koala populations in South-East Queensland (SEQ) and New South Wales (NSW) regions of Australia. Possible infection outcomes include blindness, infertility, painful cystitis, and death if left untreated. Studies have reported the treatment efficacy of chloramphenicol and doxycycline, which are the two most commonly administered treatments in diseased koalas, in clinical settings. However, none have directly compared the treatment efficacy of these antibacterials on koala

Immunological Markers of Chlamydia trachomatis Infection in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a risk factor for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Chlamydia trachomatis infection, a major cause of PID, may persist in some women. Serum IgG antibodies to chlamydial TroA and HtrA are more common in ascending or repeat chlamydial infection than in uncomplicated infection. The aim of this study was to explore the role of C. trachomatis infection in EOC by analyzing chlamydial TroA, HtrA and major outer membrane protein (MOMP) IgG serum antibody responses. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study is based on the review of Oulu University Hospital me

Physcion, a novel anthraquinone derivative against Chlamydia psittaci infection.

Physcion, a natural anthraquinone derivative, has been reported to exert remarkable antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus,Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, it is not fully illustrated as anti-Chlamydia substance. In the present study, minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)values for physcion against Chlamydia psittaci(C.psittaci) 6BC, C.psittaci SBL and C.psittaci HJ were 128 μg/mL,256 μg/mL and 128 μg/mL while minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were 256 μg/mL,512 μg/mL and 256 μg/mL,respectively. Moreover, Chlamydial adhesion to Hela

Case Report: A case of Chlamydia psittaci infection in an HIV patient.

Chlamydia psittaci is the pathogen of psittacosis and infects a wide range of birds and even humans. Human infection occurs most commonly in those with a history of contact with birds or poultry. We describe a case of psittacosis in a human immunodeficiency virus infected patient in Zhejiang Province for the first time. C. psittaci infection was confirmed by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Real-Time PCR. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the sequences from the patient's samples clustered with genotype A in the same branch. Our study highlights the possibility of diagnosing psittac

Differential Effects of Small Molecule Inhibitors on the Intracellular Chlamydia Infection.

Chlamydia are obligate intracellular bacteria that reside within a membrane-bound compartment called the chlamydial inclusion inside a eukaryotic host cell. These pathogens have a complex biphasic developmental cycle, which involves conversion between a replicating, but noninfectious, reticulate body (RB) and an infectious elementary body (EB). Small molecule inhibitors have been reported to have deleterious effects on the intracellular Chlamydia infection, but these studies have typically been limited in terms of assays and time points of analysis. We compared published and novel inhibitors a
