Elevated Mammalian Cell Cytotoxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Waters in the Presence of CuO.

It has been demonstrated previously that cupric oxide (CuO) can enhance the formation of one- to two-carbon-atom disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during water chlorination. Effects of CuO on the Chinese hamster ovary cell cytotoxicity of chlorinated water and the underlying mechanisms were investigated in this study. Results showed that 0.1 g L-1 CuO elevated the cytotoxicity of chlorinated waters by 20% and 120% at initial bromide concentrations of 15 and 415 μg L-1, respectively. Increasing the CuO dose increased the cytotoxicity induced by both known and unknown DBP fractions, and a more pron

Noncovalent interaction analysis and bioactivity evaluation of a novel chlorinated Schiff compound.

Intermolecular interactions play a significant role in the area of pharmaceuticals. Hence, there is an increasing trend towards the analysis of noncovalent interactions of active molecules to investigate the correlation between structure and properties. In this context, new Schiff base compound 2,4-dichloro-6-(((4-chlorobenzyl)imino)methyl)phenol has been prepared by condensation of 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and (4-chlorobenzyl)methenamine. The single crystals of Schiff base were obtained by the slow evaporation method. To investigate the solid-state behaviour and noncovalent interact

Chlorination-induced spread of antibiotic resistance genes in drinking water systems.

Chlorine, the most widely utilized disinfectant for drinking water globally, has recently been implicated in facilitating the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), raising concerns about its underestimated environmental and ecological risks. However, given the current fragmented research focus and results, a comprehensive understanding of the potential mechanisms and influencing factors behind chlorination-promoted ARGs transmission in drinking water systems is crucial. This work is the first to systematically review the variations in abundance, transmission mechanisms, influencing fac…

Coupling electrokinetic soil flushing with bioremediation for the removal of chlorinated benzenes and hexachlorocyclohexane.

The improper deposit of the lindane production wastes in the Sardas landfill (Sabiñánigo, Huesca) during the last century led to the pollution of this site, mainly with hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers and chlorobenzenes. The pollution affected different soil layers, including the silts and groundwater. Previous works have used electrokinetic (EK) remediation techniques to address this problem in fine-grained soil layers. However, EK often needs to be coupled with other remediation techniques. In this work, the impact of establishing a biobarrier during the application of the electroremedia

Mucolytic Drugs Ambroxol and Bromhexine: Transformation under Aqueous Chlorination Conditions.

Bromhexine and ambroxol are among the mucolytic drugs most widely used to treat acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Entering the municipal wastewater and undergoing transformations during disinfection with active chlorine, these compounds can produce nitrogen- and bromine-containing disinfection by-products (DBPs) that are dangerous for aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, primary and deep degradation products of ambroxol and bromhexine obtained in model aquatic chlorination experiments were studied via the combination of high-performance liquid and gas chromatography with high-resolu…

Detrimental Actions of Chlorinated Nucleosides on the Function and Viability of Insulin-Producing Cells.

Neutrophils are innate immune cells that play a key role in pathogen clearance. They contribute to inflammatory diseases, including diabetes, by releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines, reactive oxygen species, and extracellular traps (NETs). NETs contain a DNA backbone and catalytically active myeloperoxidase (MPO), which produces hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Chlorination of the DNA nucleoside 8-chloro-deoxyguanosine has been reported as an early marker of inflammation in diabetes. In this study, we examined the reactivity of different chlorinated nucleosides, including 5-chloro-(deoxy)cytidine (5C

Insight into the chemical transformation and organic release of polyurethane microplastics during chlorination.

The ubiquitous occurrence of microplastics in water and wastewater is a growing concern. In this study, the chemical transformation and organic release of virgin and UV-aged thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymers during chlorination were investigated. As compared to virgin TPU polymer, the UV-aged TPU polymer exhibited high chlorine reactivity with noticeable destruction on its surface functional groups after chlorination, which could be ascribed to the UV-induced activation of hard segment of TPU backbone and increased contact area. The concentrations of leached organics increased by 1.6-f…

Regulating effects of chlorinated drinking water on cecal microbiota of broiler chicks.

In this study, 2 types of drinking water were provided to broiler chicks to evaluate the relationship between the bacterial load of drinking water and cecal microbiota. One type of drinking water was untreated, while the other type was daily treated with sodium dichlorocyanurate (50 mg/L). A total of 240 broiler chicks were divided into 2 groups based on their initial body weight. There were 6 replicates in each group, and each replicate cage contained 20 birds. Each cage was assigned to a different floor of the battery cage. On the final day, water samples were collected from each replicate c

Synergistic Catalytic Elimination of NOx and Chlorinated Organics: Cooperation of Acid Sites.

The synergistic catalytic removal of NOx and chlorinated volatile organic compounds under low temperatures is still a big challenge. Generally, degradation of chlorinated organics demands sufficient redox ability, which leads to low N2 selectivity in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR). Herein, mediating acid sites via introducing the CePO4 component into MnO2/TiO2 NH3-SCR catalysts was found to be an effective approach for promoting chlorobenzene degradation. The observation of in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (in situ DRIFT) and Raman spectra refle

Removal of pathogens from greywater using green roofs combined with chlorination.

Greywater is an important alternative water resource which could be treated and reused in buildings, reducing the freshwater demand in droug … non-potable uses such as toilet flushing without a disinfection process. The addition of 3 mg/L of chlorine in the effluent provided safe greywater microbiological quality for storage periods of less than 24 h, while longer periods resulted in the significant regrowth of pathogens. In contrast, a chlorination dose of 7 mg/L completely secured inactivation …

Temperature dependence of sequential chlorinated ethenes dechlorination and the dynamics of dechlorinating microorganisms.

Thermally enhanced bioremediation is a promising approach to shorten the bioremediation period of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE). To clarify the influence that temperature has on stepwise PCE dechlorination and associated microorganisms, this study conducted dechlorination experiments using contaminated soil and groundwater under five distinct temperature conditions (i.e., 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C). PCE and TCE were dechlorinated most rapidly at 25-35 °C, whereas the preferable temperatures for the dechlorination of cis-1,2- dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and vinyl chloride (

Chlorinated plastoquinone analogs that inhibit Staphylococcus epidermidis and Candida albicans growth.

Infectious diseases are the significant global health problem because of drug resistance to most classes of antimicrobials. Interest is growing in the development of new antimicrobials in pharmaceutical discovery. For that reason, the urgency for scientists to find and/or develop new important molecules is needed. Many natural active molecules that exhibit various biological activities have been isolated from the nature. For the present research, a new selected set of aminobenzoquinones, denoted as plastoquinone analogs (PQ1-24), was employed for their in vitro antimicrobial potential in a pan

Effects of the chlorination and pressure flushing of drippers fed by reclaimed wastewater on biofouling.

Milli-channel baffle labyrinths are widely used in drip irrigation systems. They induce a pressure drop enabling drip irrigation. However, with a section thickness that is measured in mm2, they are sensitive to clogging, which reduces the performance and service life of a drip irrigation system. The impact of chlorination (1.5 ppm of free chlorine during 1 h application) and pressure flushing (0.18 MPa) on the biofouling of non-pressure-compensating drippers, fed by real reclaimed wastewater, was studied at lab scale using optical coherence tomography. The effect of these treatments on microbi…

Revealing chlorinated ethene transformation hotspots in a nitrate-impacted hyporheic zone.

Hyporheic zones are increasingly thought of as natural bioreactors, capable of transforming and attenuating groundwater pollutants present i … rocesses such as mineral dissolution/reduction, methanogenesis and ammonification dominate. Using a chlorine index metric, we show that enhanced TCE to cDCE transformation takes place within these biogeochemical hotspots, highlighting their relevance for natural plume attenuation.

An evaluation of a bucket chlorination campaign during a cholera outbreak in rural Cameroon.

Bucket chlorination (where workers stationed at water sources manually add chlorine solution to recipients' water containers during collection) is a common emergency response intervention with little evidence to support its effectiveness in preventing waterborne disease. We evaluated a bucket chlorination intervention implemented during a cholera outbreak by visiting 234 recipients' homes across five intervention villages to conduct an unannounced survey and test stored household drinking water for free chlorine residual (FCR). Overall, 89 per cent of survey respondents reported receiving buck…

Interaction of ciprofloxacin chlorination products with bacteria in drinking water distribution systems.

The interaction of ciprofloxacin chlorination products (CIP-CPs) with bacteria in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) was investigated. The piperazine ring of CIP was destroyed by chlorination. Among of CIP-CPs, by the bacterial role, 7.63% of the derivative with two carboxylic groups went through decarboxylation to form desethylene ciprofloxacin, and then loss of C2H5N group generated aniline compound. Furthermore, 12.3% of the aniline compound, 7.60% of chlorinated aniline compound and 1.35% of defluorinated product were bio-mineralized. Therefore, the chlorine and bacteria played sy…

The determination and fate of disinfection by-products from ozonation-chlorination of fulvic acid.

Ozonation of fulvic acid (FA) can result in diverse intermediate oxidation by-products, significantly affecting disinfection by-product (DBP) formation following chlorination. The objective of this study was to provide insight into ozone reaction intermediates and reveal the possible formation pathway of DBPs from ozonation of FA due to the formation of intermediate oxidation by-products. Aldehydes, aromatic acids, short-chain acids, chloroform, and dichloroacetic acid were detected at various ozone dosage additions. Aromatic acids were studied by using solid-phase extraction-ultra high-perfor

Genomic and Transcriptomic Analysis of Growth-Supporting Dehalogenation of Chlorinated Methanes in Methylobacterium.

Bacterial adaptation to growth with toxic halogenated chemicals was explored in the context of methylotrophic metabolism of Methylobacterium extorquens, by comparing strains CM4 and DM4, which show robust growth with chloromethane and dichloromethane, respectively. Dehalogenation of chlorinated methanes initiates growth-supporting degradation, with intracellular release of protons and chloride ions in both cases. The core, variable and strain-specific genomes of strains CM4 and DM4 were defined by comparison with genomes of non-dechlorinating strains. In terms of gene content, adaptation towar

Chlorination of oxybenzone: Kinetics, transformation, disinfection byproducts formation, and genotoxicity changes.

UV filters are a kind of emerging contaminant, and their transformation behavior in water treatment processes has aroused great concern. In particular, toxic products might be produced during reaction with disinfectants during the disinfection process. As one of the most widely used UV filters, oxybenzone has received significant attention, because its transformation and toxicity changes during chlorine oxidation are a concern. In our study, the reaction between oxybenzone and chlorine followed pseudo-first-order and second-order kinetics. Three transformation products were detected by LC-MS/M…
