Biodegradation of nickel and chromium from space maintainers: an in vitro study.

Band materials are often used in the practice of pediatric dentistry. Nickel and Chromium are the main ingredients of these materials. The potential health hazards of nickel and chromium and their compounds have been the focus of attention for more than 100 years. It has established that these metals could cause hypersensitivity. The study was undertaken to analyze in vitro biodegradation of space maintainers made out of stainless steel band materials from manufacturers Dentaurum and Unitek. The leaching effect simulating the use of one, two, three, and four space maintainers in clinical pract…

Effects of selenium on chromium (VI)-induced hepatotoxicity in adult rats.

Chromium, a major environmental pollutant, is known for its wide toxic manifestations. The present experiment pertains to the protective role of selenium (Se) against K(2)Cr(2)O(7)-induced hepatotoxicity. Female Wistar rats were divided into four groups of six each: group I served as controls which received standard diet; group II received in drinking water K(2)Cr(2)O(7) alone (700 ppm); group III received both K(2)Cr(2)O(7) and Se (0.5 Na(2)SeO(3) mg/kg of diet); group IV received Se (0.5 mg/kg of diet) for 3 weeks. Exposure of rats to chromium promoted oxidative stress with an increase in ma…

Safety and toxicological evaluation of a novel chromium(III) dinicocysteinate complex.

Chromium(III) is an essential trace element required for normal protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism. It also helps in energy production and increasing lean body mass. Chromium(III) dinicocysteinate (CDNC) is a unique form of bioavailable chromium(III). This study was focused on determining the broad spectrum safety of CDNC. Acute oral, acute dermal, primary dermal and eye irritation studies, Ames' bacterial reverse mutation assay, mammalian erythrocyte micronucleus test, and a 90-day dose-dependent oral toxicity study were conducted. Acute oral and dermal LD(50) of CDNC was found to be gr…

Urinary chromium loss associated with diabetes is offset by increases in absorption.

The results of the current study indicate that diabetic rats have increased urinary Cr loss as a result of their diabetes; however, this increased urinary Cr loss is offset by increased absorption of Cr. Insulin resistant, obese rats have alterations in the rates of Cr transport and distribution compared to lean rats but have similar levels of urinary Cr loss and Cr absorption. Thus, any increases in urinary Cr loss associated with insulin resistance or diabetes are offset by increased absorption. Given that dietary chromium is normally absorbed with only approximately 1% efficiency, suitable …

Inhibition of nitrate reduction by chromium (VI) in anaerobic soil microcosms.

Chromium is often found as a cocontaminant at sites polluted with organic compounds. For nitrate-respiring microbes, Cr(VI) may be not only directly toxic but may also specifically interfere with N reduction. In soil microcosms amended with organic electron donors, Cr(VI), and nitrate, bacteria oxidized added carbon, but relatively low doses of Cr(VI) caused a lag and then lower rates of CO(2) accumulation. Cr(VI) strongly inhibited nitrate reduction; it occurred only after soluble Cr(VI) could not be detected. However, Cr(VI) additions did not eliminate Cr-sensitive populations; after a secon…

Reduction and immobilization of chromium(VI) by iron(II)-treated faujasite.

Removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater typically involves reduction of Cr(VI) to insoluble Cr(III) using zerovalent iron (Fe(0)) or ferrous iron (Fe(II)). This study investigates the effectiveness of Fe(II)-treated faujasite (zeolite Fe(II)-Y) for reduction of Cr(VI) and immobilization (adsorption/co-precipitation) of the Cr(III) reaction product. The Fe(II)-faujasite material effectively removed high concentrations of dissolved Cr(VI) from aqueous solution resulting in Cr solid loadings as high as 0.30 mmol Cr per gram Fe(II)-faujasite or approximately 1.5% Cr (w:w). Results …

The cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of hexavalent chromium in medaka (Oryzias latipes) cells.

Chromium is an increasing health concern for aquatic environments, however, the mechanism of chromium toxicity in aquatic species is yet unknown. We used a medaka (Oryzias latipes) fin cell line to investigate the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of sodium chromate, a soluble form of hexavalent chromium. We used a clonogenic cytotoxicity assay to measure sodium chromate cytotoxicity, gamma-H2A.X immunofluoresence to measure DNA double-strand breaks, and chromosome damage to measure clastogenicity. We found that sodium chromate is cytotoxic to medaka fin cells, with toxicity increasing in a concen…

Effect of chromium species on phytochemical and physiological parameters in Datura innoxia.

In soil, chromium can be found in two main valence states: hexavalent Cr(VI) and trivalent Cr(III). In this study, we investigated the impact of Cr on photosynthetic gas exchange, photosystem II (PSII) activity, Cr translocation and accumulation, proline content and alkaloids production, i.e. scopolamine and hyoscyamine, in Datura innoxia. Cr uptake was influenced by its oxidation state and its concentration in growth medium. The plant roots were determined as being the main organ of Cr accumulation. Cr(VI) was more toxic than Cr(III) as indicated by reduction in plant biomass and net photosyn…

Kinetics of oxidation of nitroxyl radicals with superoxometal complexes of chromium and rhodium.

In acidic aqueous solutions, nitroxyl radicals (X)TEMPO (X = H, 4-OH, and 4-oxo) and 3-carbamoyl-PROXYL readily reduce CraqOO2+ and Rh(NH3)4(H2O)OO2+ to the corresponding hydroperoxo complexes. The kinetics are largely acid independent for CraqOO2+, but acid catalysis dominates the reactions of the rhodium complex. This emerging trend in oxidations with superoxometal complexes seems to be directly related to the thermodynamics of electron transfer. The weaker the oxidant, the more important the acid-assisted path. The rate constants for the oxidation of (X)TEMPO by CraqOO2+ are 406 M(-1) s(-1)

Magnetic face-to-face interaction and electrocommunication in chromium sandwich compounds.

The reaction of [{(C5Me5)CrCl2}2] with [2.2](1,4)cyclophane gave [(C5Me5)Cr{[2.2](1,4)cyclophane}] (1) and [(C5Me5)Cr{[2.2](1,4)cyclophane}Cr(C5Me5)] (2), depending on the reaction conditions. X-ray structure analysis showed 2 to be a ministack which in turn is stacked in the lattice. The chromium atoms are 6.035 A apart, and the distortion of the benzene rings to boat-shaped moieties is less pronounced than in parent [2.2](1,4)cyclophane. The NMR and EPR spectra were consistent with a S=1/2 ground state for 1 and with two interacting S=1/2 centers in 2. Spin density was found in the ligand pi…

Effects of chromium on photosynthetic and photoreceptive apparatus of the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Chromium is a highly toxic non-essential metal for microorganisms and plants. Due to its widespread industrial use, chromium (Cr) has become a serious pollutant in diverse environmental settings. The presence of Cr leads to the selection of algal populations able to tolerate high levels of Cr compounds. The diverse Cr-resistance mechanisms displayed by microorganisms include biosorption, diminished accumulation, precipitation, reduction of Cr(6+) to Cr(3+), and chromate efflux. In this paper we describe the effects of Cr(6+) (the more toxic species) on the photosynthetic and photoreceptive app…

Effect of Fenton's treatment on the biodegradability of chromium-complex azo dyes.

Pretreatment of an acid dyebath effluent bearing a new generation chromium complex azo dyestuff (C0 = 350 mg/L) with Fenton's reagent was investigated. Preliminary optimisation (baseline) experiments were conducted to determine the Fe2+, H2O2 concentrations and pH required to the highest possible COD and colour removals. Kinetic studies were carried out at varying temperatures (20 degrees C < T < 70 degrees C) to establish a relationship between COD abatement and H2O2 consumption. The activation energy found for catalytic H2O2 decomposition (Ea = 9.8 kJ/mol) appeared to be significantly less t…

Kinetics of the reduction of hexavalent chromium with the brown seaweed Ecklonia biomass.

The dead biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia sp., is capable of reducing toxic Cr(VI) into less toxic or nontoxic Cr(III). However, little is known about the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by the biomass. The objective of this work was to develop a kinetic model for Cr(VI) biosorption, for supporting our mechanism. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) increased with increasing total chromate concentration, [Cr(VI)], and equivalent concentration of organic compounds, [OCs], and decreasing solution pH. It was found that the reduction rate of Cr(VI) was proportional to [Cr(VI)] and [OCs], suggesting th

The role of some compounds on extraction of chromium(VI) by amine extractants.

The extraction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), from hydrochloric acid aqueous solution using Aliquat 336 and Alamine 336 extractants was performed under different experimental conditions. The data clarify that one molecule of amine extractants shares with approximately one molecule of HCl to extract two molecules of Cr(VI) from 1M HCl aqueous solutions. The extraction is an exothermic process and possesses enthalpy change values of -41.02 and -28.08 kJ mol(-1) for the extraction by Aliquat 336 and Alamine 336, respectively. The presence of potassium chloride greatly increases the extraction of…

Treatment of humic acids with ferric, aluminum, and chromium ions in water.

The interaction of ferric, aluminum, and chromium ions with humic acids at different pH of mixture has been investigated. The concentration of metal ions, bound with humic acid is proportional to the concentration of metal ion in water solution at pH 3 at low metal ion concentrations. The ratio of the number of ferric ions, bound with humic acid, to the number of acidic groups in humic acid is more than 1.5 at high ferric ion concentration in solution. That is bound with the formation of dimers of ferric ions and their treatment with acidic groups of humic acid. The radius of particles formed …

Hydrocarbons in hydrothermal vent fluids: the role of chromium-bearing catalysts.

Fischer-Tropsch type (FTT) synthesis has long been proposed to account for the existence of hydrocarbons in hydrothermal fluids. We show that iron- and chromium-bearing minerals catalyze the abiotic formation of hydrocarbons. In addition to production of methane (CH4aq), we report abiotic generation of ethane (C2H6aq) and propane (C3H8aq) by mineral-catalyzed hydrothermal reactions at 390 degrees C and 400 bars. Results suggest that the chromium component in ultramafic rocks could be an important factor for FTT synthesis during water-rock interaction in mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal systems. Th…

Determining the safety of chromium tripicolinate for addition to foods as a nutrient supplement.

Trivalent chromium is an essential element required for normal carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism in humans and animals. This article describes how one particular form of trivalent chromium, chromium tripicolinate (Chromax), a stable complex of trivalent chromium and picolinic acid, was determined to be safe for use as a nutrient supplement in foods (i.e., nutritional bars and beverages). A safety assessment of a nutrient supplement for use in food requires an evaluation of the safety of the product (Chromax), as well as an evaluation of the safety of the intended dietary ingredient (…
