Life cycle of bioethanol production from blends of different food waste.

Food waste offers a potential source for bioethanol production, but productivity depends on the chemical composition of the raw materials and the processes involved. However, assessment of the environmental sustainability of these processes is often absent and can be carried out using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This study aimed to perform an LCA on bioethanol production from mixtures of different wastes, including tubers, fruits, and processed foods, focusing on the gate-to-gate phase. The inventory included a standard scenario and an optimized scenario, which eliminated dryi

Optimization of chromium (VI) reduction in aqueous solution using magnetic Fe3O4 sludge resulting from electrocoagulation process.

The reuse of electro-coagulated sludge as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) ion reduction was investigated in this study. Electro-coagulated sludge was obtained during the removal of citric acid wastewater by the electrocoagulation process. The following parameters were optimized for Cr(VI) reduction: pH (5-7), initial Cr(VI) concentration (10-50 mg/L), contact time (10-45 min), and adsorbent dosage (0.5-1.5 g/L). Cr(VI) reduction optimization reduction experimental sets were designed using response surface design. Cr(VI) reduction optimization results 97.0% removal efficiency and 15.1 mg/g adsorption c

Dysfunctional mitochondria in age-related neurodegeneration: Utility of melatonin as an antioxidant treatment.

Mitochondria functionally degrade as neurons age. Degenerative changes cause inefficient oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and elevated ele … ria causing reduced intramitochondrial acetyl coenzyme A production. Acetyl coenzyme A supports the citric acid cycle and OXPHOS. Additionally, acetyl coenzyme A is a required co-substrate for arylalkylamine-N-acetyl transferase, which rate limits melatonin synthesis; therefore, melatonin production is diminished in cells that experience Warburg-type metabolism mak …

Increasing Ca2+ in photoreceptor mitochondria alters metabolites, accelerates photoresponse recovery, and reveals adaptations to mitochondrial stress.

Photoreceptors are specialized neurons that rely on Ca2+ to regulate phototransduction and neurotransmission. Photoreceptor dysfunction and … essing cones to additionally demonstrate that mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake alters the distributions of citric acid cycle intermediates and accelerates recovery kinetics of the cone response to light. Cones adapt to mitochondrial Ca2+ stress by decreasing MICU3, an enhancer of MCU-mediated Ca2+ uptake, and selectively transporting damaged mitochondria away from the ell …

Enhanced adsorption of methylene blue by citric acid modification of biochar derived from water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes).

In this work, a novel potential adsorbent, citric acid (CA)-modified biochar, named as CAWB, was obtained from water hyacinth biomass by slow pyrolysis in a N2 environment at 300 °C. The CA modification focused on enhancing the contaminants adsorption capacity of biochar pyrolyzed at relatively low temperature. Over 90 % of the total methylene blue (MB) could be removed at the first 60 min by CAWB, and the maximum MB adsorption capacity could reach to 395 mg g-1. The physicochemical properties of CAWB was examined by FTIR, XPS, SEM, and BET analysis. The results indicated that the additional c

Effect of acupuncture on the energy metabolism of dogs with intervertebral disk disease and cervical disk herniation: A pilot study.

Thirteen dogs with intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) and 3 dogs with cervical disk herniation (CVDH) were examined to determine the effects … creased in dogs with IVDD/CVDH after acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture treatments may activate the citric acid cycle and increase ATP production, followed by improvement of the disease. Future studies with a large sample size are needed to clarify this hypothesis.

SDHC epi-mutation testing in gastrointestinal stromal tumours and related tumours in clinical practice.

The enzyme succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) functions in the citric acid cycle and loss of function predisposes to the development of phaeochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL), wild type gastrointestinal stromal tumour (wtGIST) and renal cell carcinoma. SDH-deficient tumours are most commonly associated with a germline SDH subunit gene (SDHA/B/C/D) mutation but can also be associated with epigenetic silencing of the SDHC gene. However, clinical diagnostic testing for an SDHC epimutation is not widely available. The objective of this study was to investigate the indications for and the optimum diagno…

Further studies and biological activities of macromolecular protein R-Phycoerythrin from Portieria hornemannii.

In the present study, the purified R-Phycoerythrin (R-PE) from a red alga Portieria hornemannii was subjected to the analysis of stability under the influence of different agents. Among the various inhibitors tested on R-PE EDTA at lower concentrations (<1 mM) supported the activity of R-PE. When R-PE was exposed to different organic solvents, ethanol supported the activity at the maximum followed by acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform and methanol. Citric acid, as a preservative maintained the stability of R-PE both under 0 ± 5 °C and 30 ± 5 °C with 59.34% and 56.23% respectively, on 30th day.

α-Ketoglutarate accelerates cutaneous wound healing through modulating the epithelial-fibroblast niche.

Wound healing is a highly dynamic and metabolically demanding process. However, the primary drivers of metabolic alterations involved in this process remain incompletely understood. Here, we employed multiomics profiling of clinical samples to investigate metabolic alterations during wound healing. Our analyses revealed significant activation of the TCA cycle and identified α-ketoglutarate (αKG) as a central regulator orchestrating the reparative phase. Systemic administration of αKG promoted wound closure and re-epithelialization, characterized by enhanced neo-tissue formation with an extende

Simultaneous nicotine and oral contraceptive exposure alters brain energy metabolism and exacerbates ischemic stroke injury in female rats.

Smoking-derived nicotine (N) and oral contraceptives (OC) synergistically exacerbate ischemic brain damage in the females and underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Our published study showed that N toxicity is exacerbated by OC via altered mitochondrial function owing to a defect in the activity of cytochrome c oxidase. Here, we investigated the global metabolomic profile of brains of adolescent female Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to N ± OC. Rats were randomly exposed to saline or N + /-OC for 16-21 days followed by random allocation into two cohorts. One cohort underwent transient middle cereb

Succinate-loaded tumor cell-derived microparticles reprogram tumor-associated macrophage metabolism.

The tumor microenvironment predominantly polarizes tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) toward an M2-like phenotype, thereby inhibiting antitumor immune responses. This process is substantially affected by metabolic reprogramming; however, reeducating TAMs to enhance their antitumor capabilities through metabolic remodeling remains a challenge. Here, we show that tumor-derived microparticles loaded with succinate (SMPs) can remodel the metabolic state of TAMs. SMPs promote classical M1-like polarization of macrophages by enhancing glycolysis and attenuating the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in

Branched chain amino acids and carbohydrate restriction exacerbate ketogenesis and hepatic mitochondrial oxidative dysfunction during NAFLD.

Mitochondrial adaptation during non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) include remodeling of ketogenic flux and sustained tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle activity, which are concurrent to onset of oxidative stress. Over 70% of obese humans have NAFLD and ketogenic diets are common weight loss strategies. However, the effectiveness of ketogenic diets toward alleviating NAFLD remains unclear. We hypothesized that chronic ketogenesis will worsen metabolic dysfunction and oxidative stress during NAFLD. Mice (C57BL/6) were kept (for 16-wks) on either a low-fat, high-fat, or high-fat diet suppleme

Disrupting Mitochondrial Pyruvate Uptake Directs Glutamine into the TCA Cycle away from Glutathione Synthesis and Impairs Hepatocellular Tumorigenesis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a devastating cancer increasingly caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Disrupting the liver Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier (MPC) in mice attenuates NAFLD. Thus, we considered whether liver MPC disruption also prevents HCC. Here, we use the N-nitrosodiethylamine plus carbon tetrachloride model of HCC development to test how liver-specific MPC knock out affects hepatocellular tumorigenesis. Our data show that liver MPC ablation markedly decreases tumorigenesis and that MPC-deficient tumors transcriptomically downregulate glutathione metabolism. W
