Microscopical palynology: Birch woodland expansion and species hybridisation coincide with periods of climate warming during the Holocene epoch in Iceland.

Introgressive hybridisation between arctic dwarf birch (Betula nana) and European downy birch (B. pubescens) is relatively common in natural woodlands in Iceland. As dwarf birch is a diploid species and downy tree birch a tetraploid species, their hybrids are triploid. In the introgression process, triploid hybrids, which are partially fertile, can backcross with the parental species, producing progenies comprising introgressed diploid, triploid and tetraploid plants. Triploid plants produce both normal triporate pollen (with three pores) and abnormal, aborted pollen, due to dysfunctional meio

Comparison of fine particles and the relationship between particle variations and meteorology at an urban site and a remote site in the Eastern United States.

This study compared the variations in the mass of certain particles at an urban site, Washington, DC, and at a remote site, Shenandoah National Park, VA, in the eastern United States. Seven years (1991-1997) of Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) fine particulate matter (PM2.5), PM10, coarse fraction, SO4(2-), and total sulfur data were used for this study together with available meteorology/climatology data. Various statistical modeling and analysis procedures, including time series analysis, factor analysis, and regression modeling, were employed. Time series of

Ocean warming and acidification reveal transcriptional plasticity in the gastropod Hexaplex trunculus.

Coastal ecosystems, particularly in the rapidly warming Mediterranean Sea, are increasingly impacted by climate change driven by ocean warming and acidification. Calcifying marine invertebrates are especially vulnerable, yet their molecular responses remain poorly understood. Gene expression dynamics in the ecologically and commercially important gastropod Hexaplex trunculus were investigated under simulated scenarios combining elevated temperature and reduced pH. High-throughput RNA sequencing was used to generate a de novo assembly of the foot transcriptome, followed by differential gene exp

Asymmetric introgression and thermal advantage jointly drive climate-mediated lineage turnover in a mixed-ploidy reed.

Species distribution forecasts often ignore intraspecific genetic variation, potentially missing climate-driven lineage shifts within native ranges. We integrated population genomics (495 individuals), common-garden experiments across four sites, and species distribution modeling (837 records) for three genetic lineages of Phragmites australis in China. The octoploid FEAU lineage (haplotype P) showed superior heat tolerance, with Tcrit 1.3 °C higher and T50 0.8 °C higher than the cold-adapted tetraploid CN lineage (haplotypes O/M), and produced greater total biomass in three of four gardens. Co-ebullition of CO₂ and CH₄: Unveiling a hidden carbon emission pathway in the World's Third Pole.

Ebullition is a well-established pathway for methane (CH₄) emissions from aquatic systems. Here, we report a previously overlooked but consequential phenomenon, "co-ebullition", the joint release of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and CH₄ within gas bubbles. Based on a comprehensive investigation of dissolved greenhouse gas concentrations and emissions across major rivers (Yarlung Zangbo, Lancang, Yangtze, Yellow) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), we demonstrate that >90% of bubbling CO₂ is co-released with ebullitive CH₄, while nitrous oxide (N₂O) remains predominantly diffusive (>99.0%). This co-ebul

Identification of a functional DddX-like enzyme that catalyzes dimethylsulfoniopropionate cleavage in marine bacteria.

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), a ubiquitous organosulfur compound in marine environments, plays an important role in global sulfur cycling and climate regulation. Many marine microorganisms catabolize DMSP through DMSP lytic enzymes, producing the infochemical and potential climate-cooling gas dimethyl sulfide (DMS). The marine Roseobacter group (MRG) is one of the most abundant heterotrophic bacteria groups in marine ecosystems and an active participant in DMSP cycling. To expand our knowledge of the diversity of DMSP lytic enzymes, we identified and characterized a functional DddX-like e

Global rice paddy greenhouse gas emissions have doubled over the past six decades driven by area expansion and intensified residue incorporation.

Rice paddies are essential to global food security but are significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4), a potent driver of climate change. Here, using three independent approaches-a data-driven model, a process-based ecosystem model and a meta-analysis of over 1,255 field experiment sites-we estimate that net GHG emissions from global rice paddies approximately doubled from 1961-1980 to 2001-2020, driven primarily by a 52% increase in soil CO2 emissions and a 44% rise in soil CH4 emissions. For the most recent decade (2010s), global rice paddies emitt

Synergistic Interactions Between Warming and Elevated Atmospheric CO2 Increase Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration.

Warming and elevated CO2 (eCO2) are two potentially opposing climate-carbon (C) feedback mechanisms that modulate the magnitude of the land C sink, with warming decreasing and eCO2 increasing C sequestration. However, their net effect on soil organic C (SOC)-the largest terrestrial C stock-remains uncertain. Here, we quantify how warming, eCO2, and their interactions influence SOC by using 5558 paired observations from 1392 global studies across ecosystem types. Our study shows that warming reduces SOC by 8.0%, primarily by suppressing aboveground C inputs (-1.0%) and decreasing microbial C us

An excel-based tool to support decisions on the selection of outflow devices for blue roofs using historical maximum rain events.

Distributed infrastructures play a key role in urban stormwater management by reducing flood risks. Over the past decade, green and blue roofs have emerged as effective distributed solutions, especially as roofs cover a large share of urban land and climate change intensifies storm events that centralized systems often struggle to manage. Designing these infrastructures poses challenges, particularly in selecting an appropriate design hyetograph based on rainfall duration and return period. Simulating water storage and release dynamics enables the optimal selection of outflow devices, ensuring

Critical Role of Land Management Practices in Augmenting China's Terrestrial Carbon Sink up to 2060.

China's carbon neutrality goal hinges on augmenting its terrestrial carbon sink through land management practices and environmental changes. However, the magnitude of China's future terrestrial carbon sink and its contributing factors remain uncertain. Notably, there is a lack of appropriate tools to parse the contributions of individual land management practices (i.e., afforestation/reforestation, grassland grazing exclusion, and wood extraction) to China's future terrestrial carbon sink. Employing a process-based model, this study projected an increment of 84.8 Tg C yr-1 in China's terrestri

Main Salmonella serotypes in free-range Amazon broiler chicken farms: Comparison between collection methods and seasonal period in tropical regions.

Broiler chicken raised in semi-closed or completely free-range systems are challenged by more environmental variables that can compromise the biosecurity and microbiological quality and safety of the final product from this type of production. This study investigated Salmonella serotypes in Brazilian Amazon free-range broiler chicken farms in a tropical climate region, comparing the efficacy of the official collection methods of poultry sheds (drag swabs, footpads, and cecal feces) and the rainy and dry seasons typical of the region. Specific qualitative microbiological cultures, confirmation

Life cycle assessment on the role of H2S-based hydrogen via H2S-methane reforming for the production of sustainable fuels.

Meeting current decarbonization targets requires a shift to a hydrogen energy nexus, yet, water is a valuable resource for hydrogen production, shifting the perspective to the use of H2S instead within the context of circular economy. A comprehensive understanding of the environmental impacts, using a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA), was developed focusing on the operation of hydrogen sulfide-methane reforming (H2SMR) for H2 production benchmarked to conventional technologies, steam methane reforming (SMR) and SMR + carbon capture (CC), as feedstock to produce sustainable fuels (i.e

Quantifying the effects of sea level rise driven marsh migration on wave attenuation.

Sea level rise (SLR) is the most significant climate change-related threat to coastal wetlands, driving major transformations in coastal regions through marsh migration. Landscape transformations due to marsh migration are manifested in terms of horizontal and vertical changes in land cover and elevation, respectively. These processes will have an impact on saltmarsh wave attenuation that is yet to be explored. This study stands as a comprehensive analysis of spatially distributed wave attenuation by vegetation in the context of a changing climate. Our results show that: i) changes in saltmars

Future thermal regimes for epaulette sharks (Hemiscyllium ocellatum): growth and metabolic performance cease to be optimal.

Climate change is affecting thermal regimes globally, and organisms relying on their environment to regulate biological processes face unknown consequences. In ectotherms, temperature affects development rates, body condition, and performance. Embryonic stages may be the most vulnerable life history stages, especially for oviparous species already living at the warm edge of their distribution, as embryos cannot relocate during this developmental window. We reared 27 epaulette shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) embryos under average summer conditions (27 °C) or temperatures predicted for the middle

ENSO Climate Forcing of the Marine Mercury Cycle in the Peruvian Upwelling Zone Does Not Affect Methylmercury Levels of Marine Avian Top Predators.

Climate change is expected to affect marine mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry and biomagnification. Recent modeling work suggested that ocean warming increases methylmercury (MeHg) levels in fish. Here, we studied the influence of El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO) on Hg concentrations and stable isotopes in time series of seabird blood from the Peruvian upwelling and oxygen minimum zone. Between 2009 and 2016, La Niña (2011) and El Niño conditions (2015-2016) were accompanied by sea surface temperature anomalies up to 3 °C, oxycline depth change (20-100 m), and strong primary production gradient

Rift Valley fever dynamics in Senegal: a project for pro-active adaptation and improvement of livestock raising management.

The multi-disciplinary French project "Adaptation à la Fiévre de la Vallée du Rift" (AdaptFVR) has concluded a 10-year constructive interaction between many scientists/partners involved with the Rift Valley fever (RVF) dynamics in Senegal. The three targeted objectives reached were (i) to produce--in near real-time--validated risk maps for parked livestock exposed to RVF mosquitoes/vectors bites; (ii) to assess the impacts on RVF vectors from climate variability at different time-scales including climate change; and (iii) to isolate processes improving local livestock management and animal hea

Delimitation of kala-azar risk areas in the district of Vaishali in Bihar (India) using a geo-environmental approach.

Remote sensing and geographical information technologies were used to discriminate areas of high and low risk for contracting kala-azar or visceral leishmaniasis. Satellite data were digitally processed to generate maps of land cover and spectral indices, such as the normalised difference vegetation index and wetness index. To map estimated vector abundance and indoor climate data, local polynomial interpolations were used based on the weightage values. Attribute layers were prepared based on illiteracy and the unemployed proportion of the population and associated with village boundaries. Pea

Polymeric Membrane Contactors for CO2 Separation: A Systematic Literature Analysis of the Impact of Absorbent Temperature.

Global warming, driven significantly by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, necessitates immediate climate action. Consequently, CO2 capture is essential for mitigating carbon output from industrial and power generation processes. This study investigates the effect of absorbent temperature on CO2 separation performance using gas-liquid polymeric hollow fiber membrane (HFM) contactors. It summarizes the relationship between liquid-phase temperature and CO2 capture efficiency across various physical and chemical absorption processes. Twelve relevant studies (nine experimental, three mathematical), p
