A Non-Controlled Study of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Panic Disorder in Veterans.

Panic disorder is a highly prevalent and impairing diagnosis in veterans. Despite consistent efficacy findings in community samples, few studies have investigated evidence-based psychotherapies in veterans with panic disorder, limiting the understanding of their utility and deployment in Veterans Affairs (VA) settings. The present study preliminarily investigated cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder via a non-controlled design in a treatment-seeking veteran sample with panic disorder at the VA. Of the 41 veterans initiating treatment, 28 (68.3%) participants completed at least…

Cognitive behavior therapy for tinnitus in integrated primary care: A case example.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is a common and sometimes severely debilitating condition. It has been estimated that approximately 7% of Americans experience tinnitus daily. Hearing difficulties, sleep problems, concentration difficulties, and anxiety are commonly reported associated concerns. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is often recommended to address the psychosocial impact of burdensome tinnitus, as CBT interventions have been shown to be efficacious in reducing tinnitus burden. The presented case demonstrates that a brief (4-session) adapted CBT treatment in an integrated primary care (IPC) sett

Internet-Delivered Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Tinnitus: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus has a substantially negative impact on quality of life in up to 5% of the general population. Internet-based cognitive-behavioral treatment (iCBT) has been shown to be effective in a few trials. The aim of our study was to investigate iCBT for tinnitus by using a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Patients with severe tinnitus-related distress were randomly assigned to therapist-guided iCBT (n = 62) or to a moderated online discussion forum (n = 62). Standardized self-report measures for tinnitus-related distress (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, Mini-Tinnitus Questionnair

Internet-based cognitive-behavior therapy for procrastination: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Procrastination can be a persistent behavior pattern associated with personal distress. However, research investigating different treatment interventions is scarce, and no randomized controlled trial has examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT). Meanwhile, Internet-based CBT has been found promising for several conditions, but has not yet been used for procrastination. METHOD: Participants (N = 150) were randomized to guided self-help, unguided self-help, and wait-list control. Outcome measures were administered before and after treatment, or weekly throughout the

The Development of Acceptance of Chronic Tinnitus in the Course of a Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) is an effective treatment for tinnitus distress. Recently, acceptance-based approaches have received growing attention within the treatment of chronic tinnitus. The development of tinnitus acceptance within CB treatment remains unclear. This study investigates the efficacy of a CBT group therapy and the corresponding change in tinnitus acceptance. METHODS: 68 outpatients took part in a CBT group therapy over a 3-month period. Effect sizes and paired t-tests were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the CBT treatment and to investigate the devel

Clinical experiences in using cognitive-behavior therapy to treat panic disorder.

Although there is a growing body of research to support the use of psychological treatments for specific disorders, there has been no way for practitioners to provide feedback to researchers on the barriers they encounter in implementing these treatments in their day-to-day clinical work. In order to provide practitioners a means to give researchers information about their clinical experience, the Society of Clinical Psychology and the Division of Psychotherapy of the American Psychological Association collaborated on an initiative to build a two-way bridge between practice and research. [Treating bulimia nervosa: a nurse's experience using cognitive behavior therapy].

This paper focused on the experience of the authors in providing nursing care to a patient with bulimia nervosa who sought psychiatric assistance upon her first episode. The nursing period spanned a period from April 21, 2008 to June 16, 2008. After primary diagnosis, relevant data was collected by observation, interview, and a review of medical records. The patient's disease was assessed from five dimensions. Care problems faced for this patient included: altered nutrition profile, abnormal eating patterns, ineffective individual coping, and body image disturbance. The authors adopted a three

Can pill placebo augment cognitive-behavior therapy for panic disorder?

BACKGROUND: In a number of drug and psychotherapy comparative trials, psychotherapy-placebo combination has been assumed to represent psychotherapy. Whether psychotherapy plus pill placebo is the same as psychotherapy alone is an empirical question which however has to date never been examined systematically. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that directly compared cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) alone against CBT plus pill placebo in the treatment of panic disorder. RESULTS: Extensive literature search was able to identify th

Efficacy of group cognitive behavior therapy for the treatment of masticatory myofascial pain.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the reduction in perceived pain in patients with myofascial pain (MFP) using a group cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) course. Twenty-six participants diagnosed as having MFP were enrolled. Each CBT session had a small-group format, where participants received instruction in habit reversal, stress management, and progressive relaxation. Participants served as their own control subjects and were surveyed for pain intensity, duration, and frequency at study enrollment, before attending the CBT course, and 2 to 3 weeks after course completion. Trauma healing via cognitive behavior therapy in chronically hospitalized patients.

RATIONALE: This study examines the effect of Skill Training In Affect Regulation (STAIR) on a cohort of 24 inpatients with Schizophrenia with histories of significant trauma and Complex PTSD. METHOD: Using a model of Trauma Healing proposed by the NYS Office of Mental Health, 24 patients underwent 12 weeks of group-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Treatment modalities focused on trust, safety, affect-regulation, identification of trauma triggers, and disrupting abuse-driven behaviors. A comparison group of patients received 12 weeks of supportive psychotherapy by therapists unfamiliar with T

Patients with bulimia nervosa who fail to engage in cognitive behavior therapy.

Although cognitive behavioral treatment is the treatment of choice in bulimia nervosa, patients' response is variable. A minority of patients do not respond at all and some never engage in treatment. This paper concerns the latter group. A case series of six such patients with whom treatment could not be initiated is compared with a group who received a full course of treatment. The group with whom treatment could not begin were found to have a longer history of disorder, to report excessive laxative abuse, to have more severe depressed mood and a greater dissatisfaction with their body weight

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Perspectives on etiology and cognitive behavior therapy.

This article gives a brief historical introduction to the field of eating disorders. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) are seen from a sociocultural point of view, and the current emphasis on slimness is regarded as an important factor in the etiology of eating disorders. A short description of the central features of BN is given, and some important explanatory psychological models are described with the emphasis on the cognitive-behavioral model. Recent controlled treatment studies are cited.

The Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy versus Notched Sound Therapy in Adults with Chronic Subjective Tinnitus and Normal Hearing.

Introduction  Tinnitus can be distressing, and it affects the quality of life (QoL) through psychological and cognitive impairments. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and notched sound therapy (NST) are tinnitus management approaches aiming to reduce symptoms and improve QoL via two different mechanisms. The CBT attains the cognitive principle, whereas the NST initiates tinnitus habituation. Objective  To evaluate the effect of CBT and NST and compare their results in the management of chronic subjective tinnitus. Methods  The present prospective study involved 64 adults with normal hearing a…

Body mass index and atypical balance as predictors of winter depression remission in cognitive-behavioral therapy and light therapy.

BACKGROUND: Efficacious treatments for winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD) include light therapy (LT) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-SAD); however, baseline characteristics may differentially predict treatment outcomes. This study investigated body mass index (BMI) and atypical balance (the proportion of atypical depression symptoms), as predictors of depression remission. METHODS: The parent study randomized 177 adults diagnosed with Major Depression, Recurrent with Seasonal Pattern to 6-weeks of CBT-SAD (n = 88) or LT (n = 89) and followed participants one and two winters later.

Targeting Chronic Pain in Primary Care Settings Using Behavioral Health Consultants: A Pilot Study Implementing Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain.

Chronic pain is common among military service members, retirees, and families, yet non-pharmacologic options in primary care are limited. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility, and outcomes of Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (BCBT-CP) delivered by integrated Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs) in a Military Health System (MHS) clinic. This prospective, observational pragmatic pilot study recruited 44 Department of Defense beneficiaries (M age = 44.5 years [SD = 9.3 years]; 75% female; 50% Caucasian; 47.7% military family members, 38.6% retirees) with chronic pain (≥ 1…

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Psychosis in People with Intellectual Disability-A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Cognitive behavior therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is effective in reducing psychiatric symptoms. Most CBTp trials have excluded patients with intellectual disabilities, even though intellectual disabilities are associated with an at least 3 times higher psychosis prevalence. More understanding of evidence-based approaches for this population is needed. The aim of this review was to assess the current state of knowledge about CBTp for people with both intellectual disabilities and psychosis. Specifically, the interests were the efficacy and feasibility of CBTp for this

Predictors of school-based cognitive behavior therapy outcome for youth with anxiety.

Meta-analyses of school-based CBT have shown that prevention for anxiety symptoms typically report small but significant effects. There is limited knowledge regarding which youths may benefit most and least from such programs, and characteristics of youth who respond differentially to interventions of different intensity. The present study examined predictors of school-based CBT outcomes among 302 youths (mean age 14.0 years, SD 0.8, 84% female) who participated in a randomized waitlist-controlled trial comparing a 10-session and a 5-session group intervention. Potential predictors included yo

Stress Hormones as Predictors of Response to Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Panic Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Data regarding the potential association between the outcome of psychotherapy of panic disorder (PD) and biological parameters are few. In 21 (16 females) consecutively referred, medication-free, acutely ill PD outpatients, without comorbidities, except agoraphobia, we systematically explored for potential neuroendocrine and clinical correlates of response to a brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). METHODS: Cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) basal plasma levels were measured. Measures of psychopathology: (a) Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), (b) Clinical Globa
