Two cases of massive gangrenous inflammation of the colon proximal to obstructive carcinomatous lesions, the so-called obstructive colitis, are reported. Because of the rarity of this condition, the etiological factors responsible for this entity are not yet clear. The detailed pathological and microbiological studies at the time of operation are essential to their further clarification.

An 85-year-old man with a clinical and x-ray picture consistent with a large bowel obstruction had a large left inguinal hernia with an incarcerated loop of sigmoid colon containing a small annular constricting colon carcinoma. Colonic obstruction due to inguinal hernia alone is so rare that a thorough evaluation should be done preoperatively in any patient believed to have colonic obstruction due to inguinal hernia.

A primigravida at 32 weeks 6 days of gestation presented with abdominal pain and features of acute abdomen with suspected peritonitis of unclear aetiology. An emergency lower-segment caesarean section was performed resulting in delivery of a preterm neonate requiring neonatal intensive care. Intraoperatively, dense adhesions and a sealed perforation involving the sigmoid colon were identified, necessitating diversion colostomy and lymph node excision. Histopathology confirmed colorectal adenocarcinoma, and imaging revealed hepatic metastases. The patient was managed with a multidisciplinary ap

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the colorectum is rare malignancy. It constitutes only 0.1-0.25 per 1000 cases of colorectal carcinoma. Here, we report a rare case of primary SCC of the sigmoid colon in a 40-year-old female from Western Uttar Pradesh, India. She presented with acute intestinal obstruction and a history of altered bowel habits and decreased appetite. Surgical resection revealed a constricted tumor in the sigmoid colon. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of SCC with no lymph node involvement (0/32). The patient received four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy (FOLF

A 74-year-old male patient underwent laparoscopic left nephroureteral surgery for suspected left ureteral carcinoma on follow-up CT after sigmoid colon cancer surgery and lymph node recurrence surgery. Although primary ureteral adenocarcinoma or metastatic ureteral carcinoma was suspected, postoperative histopathological examination and clinical course led to the diagnosis of intraluminal ureteral dissemination of sigmoid colon cancer. Postoperative intraluminal ureteral recurrence of colorectal cancer is extremely rare. This symptom should be ruled out after sigmoid colon cancer surgery.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is principally characterized by low-grade cytology without evidence of invasion to other organs. We report a LAMN surgical case whose appendiceal tumor penetrated the sigmoid colon wall. An 87-year-old man was referred for endoscopic resection (ER) of a colon polyp. Despite four ERs over 5 years, the polyp recurred at the same site. Laparoscopic surgery revealed a dilated appendix firmly attached to the sigmoid colon. We performed en bloc resection of both the sigmoid colon and appendix without tumor exposure. The histopathological evaluation show

Colorectal cancer is considered the third most common cancer worldwide. On the other hand, gallbladder cancer is rare. Synchronous tumors in both the colon and the gallbladder are extremely infrequent. Herein, we report the case of a female patient with sigmoid colon cancer and incidental detection of synchronous gallbladder cancer on histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. As synchronous gallbladder and colonic carcinomas are rare, physicians should be aware of these so that an optimal course of treatment can be chosen.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) involving the gastrointestinal tract is exceptionally rare, except in the esophagus and the anal canal. In the hindgut, a common site of involvement is the colo-rectum, commonly seen in the fifth decade of life. The presentation is usually in the advanced stages and carries a poor prognosis. Due to the rarity of the disease, before labeling it as a primary lesion, the possibility of metastasis from a distant primary should be entertained. Consensus guidelines regarding the management of such a rare condition are lacking. Here, we present the case of an elderly gen

BACKGROUND: A right-sided sigmoid colon is an extremely rare anatomic variation that should be considered as a possibility by surgeons and radiologists before surgery. Here, we report the first clinical case of a carcinoma in a right-sided sigmoid colon revealed by a preoperative computed tomography (CT).
CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old Chinese man was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain. CT revealed a redundant sigmoid colon with a mass on the right side of the cecum and ascending colon. Laparoscopy confirmed an abnormal course in the descending colon and sigmoid colon. Subsequently, he

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease, ectopic endometrium can invade any part of the body, usually in the ovary and uterine sacral ligament, while endometriosis invades the intestinal wall to cause intestinal obstruction is very rare, which easily leads to misdiagnosis. In this case report, we present a case of sigmoid endometriosis with bowel obstruction. Pathological examination is the main basis for the diagnosis of intestinal endometriosis, and the comprehensive treatment of surgery and hormonal therapy is an effective method for the treatment of intestinal endometriosis.

Based on sonographic findings, colovesical fistula was diagnosed in a 71-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer. Gray-scale sonography revealed an irregular thickening of the sigmoid colon wall abutting the urinary bladder which also showed thickening in the region of contact. Color Doppler sonography showed a twinkling artifact within the thickened bladder wall. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan showed luminal communication between the sigmoid colon and the bladder in the region of thickening.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to record the changes in the mucosal intracellular (pHi) of the sigmoid colon during operations of the abdominal aorta, using the air tonometry method.
METHODS: Patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and with aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD) were included in the study. The tonometric catheter was placed in the sigmoid colon under colonoscopy, and its position was confirmed during operation. The pHi records were divided into certain phases: 1) beginning; 2) clamping; 3) declamping; 4) Intensive Care Unit (ICU); 5) 1st day in the ICU; 6) 2nd day

We report the case of a 79-year-old male who presented with altered bowel habit. Subsequent endoscopy and radiological investigations suggested the diagnosis of a likely sigmoid colon malignancy. Surgery was performed to remove the suspected tumour and post-surgical histology showed only inflammatory change in an area of underlying sigmoid diverticulosis with an associated impacted dental prosthesis.
