Time to set the agenda for schistosomiasis elimination.

It is time to raise global awareness to the possibility of schistosomiasis elimination and to support endemic countries in their quest to determine the most appropriate approaches to eliminate this persistent and debilitating disease. The main interventions for schistosomiasis control are reviewed, including preventive chemotherapy using praziquantel, snail control, sanitation, safe water supplies, and behaviour change strategies supported by information, education and communication (IEC) materials. Differences in the biology and transmission of the three main Schistosoma species (i.e. Schisto

One Health: the global challenge of epidemic and endemic leishmaniasis.

'One Health' proposes the unification of medical and veterinary sciences with the establishment of collaborative ventures in clinical care, surveillance and control of cross-species disease, education, and research into disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy and vaccination. The concept encompasses the human population, domestic animals and wildlife, and the impact that environmental changes ('environmental health') such as global warming will have on these populations. Visceral leishmaniasis is a perfect example of a small companion animal disease for which prevention and control might abol

[Infection control in hospitals].

Infection control committee as the central decision-making and infection control team (ICT) for carrying out all aspects of infection control are important for hospital infection control. Standard precautions are used for all patients and apply to all body fluids except for sweat, whether or not they contain visible blood. Transmission-based precautions involve airborne, droplet, contact vector-borne and common vehicle precautions. Airborne precautions are for tuberculosis, varicella and measles. Small particles (< 5 microm) can be dispersed widely by air currents. Droplet precautions are for

Slow virus diseases of the central nervous system.

Slow virus diseases are characterized by a long asymptomatic period, often months or years in duration, between the introduction of the infectious agent and the appearance of clinical illness. Two distinct groups cause serious degenerative diseases of the brain and spinal cord. The first to be identified are those caused by "unconventional agents," kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The second category, "conventional virus diseases," include SSPE (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis), PML (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy), progressive rubella encephalitis, and HIV encephalopathy. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) integration into India's NCD program - Obstacles and solutions for the implementation of guidelines at the national level.

Individuals who have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are at high risk of metabolic comorbidities and can put a significant strain on healthcare systems. If not managed in a timely manner, NAFLD can lead to sustained healthcare costs, economic losses, and reduced health-related quality of life. In India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to prevent NAFLD and integrated public health measures into the existing National Program for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP NCD). However, 3 years after the integration

Physical exercise, health, and disease treatment: The role of macrophages.

Subclinical inflammation is linked to comorbidities and risk factors, consolidating the diagnosis of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, hepatic steatosis, and some types of cancer. In this context, the role of macrophages is highlighted as a marker of inflammation as well as for the high power of plasticity of these cells. Macrophages can be activated in a wide range between classical or proinflammatory, named M1, and alternative or anti-inflammatory, also known as M2 polarization. All nuances between M1 and M2 macrophages orchestrate the immune res

Increased Prevalence of Alcohol-Related Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Higher prevalence of alcohol-related gastrointestinal (GI) and liver diseases (ARGLDs) were anecdotally reported during the COVID-19 pandemic, but little published evidence exists. METHODS: A healthcare system audit of inpatient GI consults was performed during the pandemic's lockdown phase (3/23/2020-5/10/2020, n=558) and reopening phase (6/1/2020-7/19/2020, n=711) with comparison to those timeframes in 2019. RESULTS: Consult volume decreased by 27.7% during the lockdown, but the proportion of ARGLDs increased by 59.6% (p=0.03). This trend continued during reopening, with potent

Australia's notifiable disease status, 2016: Annual report of the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System.

In 2016, a total of 67 diseases and conditions were nationally notifiable in Australia. The states and territories reported 330,387 notifications of communicable diseases to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. Notifications have remained stable between 2015 and 2016. In 2016, the most frequently notified diseases were vaccine preventable diseases (139,687 notifications, 42% of total notifications); sexually transmissible infections (112,714 notifications, 34% of total notifications); and gastrointestinal diseases (49,885 notifications, 15% of total notifications). Cholera - management and prevention.

Cholera is an acute secretory diarrhoeal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is likely to have originated in the Indian sub-continent; however, it spread to cause six worldwide pandemics between 1817-1923. The ongoing seventh worldwide pandemic of cholera began in 1961. The intensity, duration and severity of cholera epidemics have been increasing, signaling the need for more effective control and prevention measures. The response to the cholera pandemics of the 19th century led to the development of safe and effective sanitation and water systems which have effectively remov

Parasitic diseases of remote Indigenous communities in Australia.

Indigenous Australians suffer significant disadvantage in health outcomes and have a life expectancy well below that of non-Indigenous Australians. Mortality rates of Indigenous Australians are higher than that of Indigenous populations in developed countries elsewhere in the world. A number of parasitic diseases which are uncommon in the rest of the Australian population contribute to the high burden of disease in many remote Indigenous communities. High rates of infection with enteric parasites such as Strongyloides stercoralis, hookworm and Trichuris have been recorded and infection of the
