Beyond the green myth: a scoping review of spatial justice and structural barriers to therapeutic urban agriculture for vulnerable communities.

INTRODUCTION: Motivated by the urgent need to address urban health inequities, this scoping review critiques the mainstream public health discourse that champions therapeutic urban agriculture (UA) as an accessible mental health intervention. This narrative often obscures the systemic spatial inequities and structural barriers marginalized populations face. To address this gap, we systematically mapped the physical, economic, and institutional mechanisms impeding therapeutic UA for vulnerable communities. METHODS: Adhering to JBI and PRISMA-ScR methodologies, we executed a systematic retrieva

Healing after war/conflict: transformative health workforce strategies for a resilient future: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Human resources for health (HRH) are critical for effective healthcare delivery, particularly in post-conflict settings where health systems face severe challenges. Post-conflict environments often exacerbate pre-existing HRH challenges, such as shortages, poor working conditions, and limited training opportunities. This scoping review aims to identify and synthesize evidence on interventions addressing HRH in post-conflict settings, highlighting strategies, outcomes, and barriers to their implementation. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases (e.g.,

Fulfilling an Unmet Need: Roles for Clinical Pharmacists in Preconception Care.

Preconception care refers to a set of interventions that identify and address biomedical, behavioral, and social risks to a woman's health that may negatively impact a future pregnancy. A great need for preconception care currently exists in the United States, and women's attitudes about discussions with health care providers about healthy and safe pregnancies are positive. Clinical pharmacists are well positioned to work with other health care and public health professionals to ensure that all women of childbearing potential have access to preconception care. As part of the collaborative heal

Assessing resources for implementing a community directed intervention (CDI) strategy in delivering multiple health interventions in urban poor communities in Southwestern Nigeria: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Many simple, affordable and effective disease control measures have had limited impact due to poor access especially by the poorer populations (urban and rural) and inadequate community participation. A proven strategy to address the problem of access to health interventions is the Community Directed Interventions (CDI) approach, which has been used successfully in rural areas. This study was carried out to assess resources for the use of a CDI strategy in delivering health interventions in poorly-served urban communities in Ibadan, Nigeria. METHODS: A formative study was carried

Addressing the problem of pet overpopulation: the experience of New Hanover County Animal Control Services.

Pet overpopulation is a problem for humans not only because of the increased rabies exposure risk but also because it puts a strain on animal control agencies, which must care for, house, and often euthanize the unwanted animals. New Hanover County, North Carolina, Animal Control Services saw the need to control this problem and developed a plan to diminish the number of unwanted companion animals in its community. With the help of training through the UNC Management Academy for Public Health, they created a successful business plan to build an on-site spay/neuter facility. The facility began

A study of well-being of elderly people in three communities in Zimbabwe.

The purpose of this research was to assess the well-being of elderly people in three different community types in Zimbabwe. Well-being was defined as general health, health resource access, nutrition, habits, and physical function. Major health problems, hygiene, nutrition and access to health care did vary between communities, but there was a low level of physical dependency throughout. The findings suggest that once a critical decline in fitness occurs, elderly people may rapidly die as a result of diminished medical and physical support. These findings are relevant to future plans for elder

The crisis nature of health care transitions for rural older adults.

The complex health, socioeconomic, and environmental problems experienced by many American elders often place them at high risk for disease and disability. Over time, acutely or chronically ill older persons experience numerous transitions across various health care settings. Although availability of health services is improving in rural areas, barriers such as distance, geography, and poor distribution often limit access to health care. In a longitudinal rural ethnography, the health care transition experiences of older adults, families, and health care providers were examined. A major ethnog

Postpartum care for parent-infant dyads: A community midwifery model.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum health is in crisis in the United States, with rising pregnancy-related mortality and worsening racial inequities. The World Health Organization recommends four postpartum visits during the 6 weeks after childbirth, yet standard postpartum care in the United States is generally one visit 6 weeks after birth. We present community midwifery postpartum care in the United States as a model concordant with World Health Organization guidelines, describing this model of care and its potential to improve postpartum health for birthing people and babies. METHODS: We conducted

Barriers and facilitators to transitional care in older adults following hip fracture: A mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is a leading cause of disability and mortality in older adults, affecting an estimated 2.6 million people annually worldwide. Transitional care, the coordinated management of the shift from hospital to community, is central to functional recovery yet remains poorly systematised across health systems. AIM: To identify the barriers and facilitators to hospital-to-community transitional care in older adults (≥65 years) following hip fracture surgery. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) convergent integrated approach. Fo

Cholangiocarcinoma protective factors in Greater Mekong Subregion: Critical issues for joint planning to sustainably solve regional public health problems.

Although Opisthorchis viverrini (OV), lifestyle, and diet co-factors have a relatively high prevalence in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) population, cumulative (0-74) incidence rates of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) do not reach 5% in this region. Other co-factors must influence, but in this study, we only highlighted positive factors for guiding joint planning to address public health problems at the regional level. Therefore, we aimed to study prevalence and factors associated with CCA incidence focusing only on protective factors. A cross-sectional analytic study was carried out from June to

Strengthening natural hazard preparedness in Nepal: insights from stakeholder and community engagement.

Nepal faces many natural hazards, including floods, landslides, earthquakes, and extreme weather, which severely impact infrastructure, public health, and community resilience. In 2025, we conducted a formative stakeholder and community engagement exercise to inform research on strengthening local preparedness. This included consultative meetings with national agencies, local government, and community members in two hazard-affected municipalities. Field notes from the meetings were thematically analysed to identify priority themes. Findings indicated that national legal and policy frameworks e

"When you first walk out the gates…where do [you] go?": Barriers and opportunities to achieving continuity of health care at the time of release from a provincial jail in Ontario.

We aimed to explore continuity of health care and health barriers, facilitators, and opportunities for people at the time of release from a provincial correctional facility in Ontario, Canada. We conducted focus groups in community-based organizations in a city in Ontario, Canada: a men's homeless shelter, a mental health service organization, and a social service agency with programs for people with substance use disorders. We included adults who spoke English well enough to participate in the discussion and who had been released from the provincial correctional facility in the previous year.
