Implementation planning for community-based point-of-care HIV testing for infants: Recommendations from community leaders in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Early infant diagnosis (EID) establishes the presence of HIV infection in HIV-exposed infants and children younger than 18 months of age. EID services are hospital-based, and thus fail to capture HIV-exposed infants who are not brought to the hospital for care. Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic systems deployed in the community could increase the proportion tested and linked to treatment, but little feasibility and acceptability data is available. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (n = 74) were conducted by a Kenyan team with community members (Community Health Workers/Volunteers [

Community-Led Transformation in Practice: A Framework for Trust-Driven Community-Academic Partnerships to Advance Public Health.

Community-academic partnerships are increasingly recognized as essential for advancing equitable public health outcomes. Yet many partnerships struggle to move beyond short-term, project-based collaboration toward sustained, trust-based engagement with communities. This commentary draws on the experience of the University of California San Diego Center for Community Health (CCH) and its long-standing partnerships with immigrant, refugee, and other underserved communities in San Diego County. Over more than two decades of practice, CCH and its community partners developed the Community-Led Tran

Social Prescribing as a Catalyst for System Transformation.

Rising social, health and healthcare challenges in Canada signal a need for a paradigm shift. This issue centres on the case for social prescribing - connecting patients to community resources via "link workers" - as strategic infrastructure for improved population health. The papers in this issue lay out a vision for the future, building on this social prescribing model, and offer implementation lessons, such as prioritizing high-complexity clients and maintaining an equity focus. They also raise some important cautions, such as the need to maintain a strong welfare state, to avoid narrow Nat…

Assessing and managing delirium in terminally ill adults in the community.

Delirium is a complex and serious neuropsychiatric syndrome that causes an acute disturbance in attention, awareness and cognition. It is common among people with a terminal illness, especially as the end of life approaches. Delirium can cause distressing symptoms, significant carer burden, acute hospital admission and increased mortality. Identifying delirium early is important because it increases the person's chance of recovery and enables better management in line with their preferences. This article discusses how to assess and manage delirium in terminally ill people cared for in communit

"Where we wanna be": The role of structural violence and place-based trauma for street life-oriented Black men navigating recovery and reentry.

In this study, we used photovoice and grounded theory to understand the barriers and resources encountered by Black men navigating substance use recovery and/or reentry following incarceration in an urban, economically disadvantaged neighborhood. The conceptual framework that emerged highlighted the significant impact of traumatic disruptions to place and relationships, as well as an ongoing dialectical tension between considering passive participation in street life or choosing recovery. Regarding action steps, participants recommended investing in community infrastructure, rehabilitating adu

Community organization capacity and barriers to mental health promotion efforts: a configurational analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mental health concerns have been on the rise in recent years, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Minoritized racial and ethnic groups are especially at risk for untreated mental health concerns. Mental health promotion via culturally relevant approaches in community settings serving minoritized groups can help to address mental health concerns among these populations. However, mental health promotion activities require resources reflective of organizational capacity. The current study investigates the role of organizational capacity and characteristics in barriers

Rural hospital philanthropy: community awareness and willingness to donate to the Georgia rural hospital tax credit program.

BACKGROUND: The Rural Hospital Tax Credit program, legislated by the Georgia General Assembly, provides financial support to rural hospitals by allowing Georgia taxpayers to contribute to eligible rural hospitals, receiving a 100% tax credit for their donation. While the policy aims to improve hospital financial stability, little is known about public awareness of the program or factors influencing willingness to donate. This study examines community members’ awareness of the Georgia rural hospital tax credit program and their willingness to donate to it to better understand donor perspectives

Opioid Use Disorder Community Education Events: Rural Public Health Implications.

The opioid overdose epidemic continues to disproportionately impact underserved rural areas throughout the nation, with many of these rural areas experiencing greater opioid-related mortality rates than their urban counterparts. With limited treatment infrastructure and resources, two rural communities in Southeast Utah utilized community-based participatory research collaboration principles to develop, implement, and evaluate a series of evidence-based community opioid education events. This practical and quantitative study surveying 123 participants describes the collaborative efforts of two

Implementation contextual factors related to community-based active travel to school interventions: a mixed methods interview study.

BACKGROUND: Active travel to school contributes to multiple physical and psychosocial benefits for youth, yet population rates of active travel to school are alarmingly low in the USA and many other countries. Though walking school bus interventions are effective for increasing rates of active travel to school and children's overall physical activity, uptake of such interventions has been low. The objective of this study was to conduct a mixed methods implementation evaluation to identify contextual factors that serve as barriers and facilitators among existing walking school bus programs. Community-based paediatric eye care in low- and middle-income countries: bridging the gap between policy and practice.

Childhood visual impairment and blindness remain major public health concerns in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), despite a substantial proportion being preventable or treatable. Delayed diagnosis, inadequate access to eye care services, fragmented referral systems, limited awareness and insufficient community-level interventions continue to contribute to the burden. In recent years, the epidemiological profile of paediatric ocular morbidity has shifted from infectious and nutritional causes towards refractive errors, myopia and developmental eye disorders, necessitating stronger comm

On willingness to be a bone marrow donor.

The authors studied factors that may influence the willingness of apheresis donors to consider bone marrow donation to an unrelated recipient. Donors were sent questionnaires describing bone marrow transplantation and the role of the donor. The information about degree of risk to the donor was varied from low to high risk. Two other factors that might influence donor motivation also were presented: probability of actually being asked to participate (high or low), and "salience of responsibility," which defines the stress to donate based on the number of persons being asked (large or small grou

Opportunities and challenges in utilizing community assets to extend chronic care management in podoconiosis endemic areas: Evidence from Northwestern Ethiopia.

Community-based chronic care intervention is important in the control and prevention of lifelong conditions such as podoconiosis and similar 'intensive disease management' neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Despite a call for such interventions, few efforts have been made to identify opportunities and challenges related to their implementation. Employing a qualitative approach, this study explored the possibility of engaging community actors, physical places and networks to promote chronic care management in rural Ethiopia. We gathered data from affected individuals, community members, local
