In order to investigate whether high exposure to Erwinia herbicola causes sensitization in grain handlers, immunological tests (agargel precipitation, complement fixation, passive cutaneous anaphylaxis, and intradermal) with the extracts of these bacteria were performed in different groups of grain workers and in other groups of population. Studies on the persistence and levels of antibodies in 280 patients at different intervals following surgery for echinococcosis are described. Post-operative antibody levels were investigated by means of four immunodiagnostic methods, namely, the complement fixation, latex agglutination, indirect haemagglutination, and intradermal tests. To assess two modifications of the platelet factor 3 (PF3) test for platelet antibody detection, an analysis of test conditions was performed with normal test material (serum, plasma, globulin fraction), defined HLA-specific, complement-fixing antisera and a quinidine-induced antiserum. Capillary C4d was an established marker of antibody-mediated rejection in kidney transplantation. A yeast phase histoplasmin, designated CYL, was studied in 156 humans living in areas of the United States endemic for histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, or both fungal entities. Comparisons were made with Food and Drug Administration reference mycelial histoplasmin. Among persons without concurrent spherulin sensitivity, reactor rates and sizes were the same with both reagents. Some persons with spherulin sensitivity reacted only to the mycelial reagent. Histoplasmin-CYL skin tests did not induce significant changes in complement-fixing antibody in histoplasmin-reactive subjects.

The authors studied a possibility of using the antigen neutralization test with dry immunoglobulin typhus erythrocytic diagnostic agent for the purpose of detection of Rickettsia prowazeki antibodies. Blood sera of 315 healthy persons, 24 patients with sporadic typhus, and 18 laboratory animals immunized with R. sibirica and R. burneti, as well as with Proteus OX19 were examined. This study demonstrated that the administration of a spherulin skin test to subjects whose skin-test reactions were either positive or negative, at the dose used (Usual Test Strength), did not elicit an antibody response to antigens of Coccidioides immitis or Histoplasma capsulatum, as determined by standard serologic methods. Of 32 subjects, one developed a seroconversion by the latex agglutination test. The data suggested that spherulin can be used clinically as a diagnostic reagent without affecting the serologic reactions, which are of both prognostic and diagnostic value.
