This second part extends the system-level framework established in Part I by examining advanced adhesive and sealant technologies through a performance-, circularity-, and application-oriented perspective relevant to contemporary packaging systems. While Part I focused on material classification, bonding and sealing mechanisms, regulatory aspects, and interfacial design principles, the present review analyses how advanced adhesive and sealant systems behave under realistic converting, sealing, service, recycling, and end-of-life conditions. Particular attention is devoted to bio-based and comp

The bedding material used in barns for dairy cows has a significant effect on animal welfare and performance. Bedding influences the duration in which animals remain lying down and, consequently, the processes of rumination and milk production. It is crucial to have a complete understanding of the properties of bedding materials and the effects of alternative bedding materials on dairy cattle. This paper aims to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological properties of various alternative and conventional bedding materials for dairy cattle for use in compost bedded pack or freestall barn s

The availability and persistence of various antibiotics in soil and soil amended with composted poultry manure were investigated through laboratory incubation assays. Six veterinary antibiotics (one fluoroquinolone, two tetracyclines, two sulfonamides and one lincosamide) and one active metabolite (ciprofloxacin) were studied. The incubation assays were conducted at a controlled temperature of 25 °C with different water regimes, such as constant moisture content (80% of water holding capacity) and drying-rewetting cycles. The studied antibiotics were determined in soil and soil aqueous phase s

Improving soil chemical quality while enhancing maize yield is critical for sustainable crop production in acidic soils. We conducted a two-year field experiment on acidic Nitisols in the Burie district, Ethiopia, to evaluate the combined effects of maize cob biochar (BC), vermicompost (VC), and inorganic N/P₂O₅ rates on soil chemical properties and maize productivity. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial arrangement, testing three levels of inorganic N/P₂O₅ (0/0, 120/69, 240/138 kg ha-1), BC (0, 4, 8 t ha-1), and VC (0, 5.02, 10.04 t ha-1). The degree of degradation of pure poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] and its composites with cork incubated under industrial and laboratory composting conditions was investigated. The materials were parallelly incubated in distilled water at 70 °C as a reference experiment (abiotic condition). It was demonstrated that addition of the cork into polyester strongly affects the matrix crystallinity. It influences the composite degradation independently on the degradation environment. Moreover, the addition of the cork increases the thermal stability of the obtained compos…

BACKGROUND: Humic acid (HA), biochar-based microbial agent (M) and vermicompost (V) have been shown to improve soil structure and increase crop yields. However, the combined effects of these amendments on cotton growth, photosynthetic characteristics, yield and fiber quality in saline-alkali soils remain unclear.
RESULTS: The results obtained in the present study showed that: (i) compared to the control (CK), the single and combined applications of HA, M and V increased soil water storage and reduced soil salinity; (ii) the combined application of HA, M and V resulted in the greatest improvem

This study examined the effect of Red-S3B textile dye on soil microbial activities, uptake of the dye by wheat plants and growth on the dye-contaminated soil. Moreover, pressmud (PM) application was investigated for its alleviative effect on wheat yield and dye uptake by plants. Preliminarily, soil was spiked with a wide concentration range (0, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg kg-1 soil) of Red-S3B dye and wheat was grown for 42-days. The dye did not suppress the activities of soil enzymes and growth of wheat seedlings at 100 mg kg-1; however, beyond this level the dye had a linear negative effe

Mucormycosis also called zygomycosis is a rare infection caused by saprophytic aerobic fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called Mucoromycotina in the order Mucorales. Earlier these fungi were called Zygomycota but this scientific name has recently been changed. Mucormycosis can result in an acute, rapidly advancing and occasionally fatal disease caused by different fungi typically found in the soil and in association with decaying organic matter such as leaves, compost piles or rotten wood. These fungal infections are relatively infrequent; however, they occur in individuals who are debi

Biodegradable foamlike materials based on a naturally occurring polymer (casein protein) and sodium montmorillonite clay (Na+ -MMT) were produced through a simple freeze-drying process. By utilizing DL-glyceraldehyde (GC) as a chemical cross-linking agent, the structural integrity of these new aerogels were remarkably improved when compared to those of the control system (without GC), with a minimal increase in the density from 0.11 to 0.12 g cm⁻³. The degree of perfection of the foamlike structures was another parameter that had a significant influence on the physical and thermal performances

Steinernema feltiae is the most effective nematode for controlling sciarid species but S. carpocapsae does exert some control. S. feltiae is less effective at 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. S. anomali, S. riobravis and two Heterorhabditis spp. gave better control at the higher temperature. All six sciarid species tested were susceptible to S. feltiae but there was some variation in the level of infection. UK isolates of S. feltiae were more effective against UK sciarids than the nematode isolates from other European countries which were tested. Adult sciarids are infected by S. feltiae and

BACKGROUND: Tetracyclines are frequently detected in the environment due to their persistence and extensive use as antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine. They can accumulate in sludge and in agricultural soils fertilised with treated sludge or manure. This behaviour may lead to ecological risk, propagation of antibiotic resistance and can affect crops and human health through the consumption of vegetables and fruits. Analytical methods for the determination of tetracyclines and their transformation products (TPs) in sludge and agricultural soils are scarce, include a small number of tet

Ruminants are the largest reservoir for all types of Escherichia coli, including the pathogenic ones, which can potentially be transmitted to humans via the food chain and environment. A longitudinal study was performed to estimate the prevalence and antibiotic-resistant pattern of pathogenic E. coli (pE.coli) strains in dairy farm environments. A total of 846 environmental samples (water, lagoon slurry, bedding, feed, feces, soil, and compost) were collected in summer over two years from five dairy farms in Maryland, USA. An additional 40 soil samples were collected in winter and summer seaso

Sulfur-containing gases are main sources of landfill odors, which has become a big issue for pollution to environment and human health. Biocover is promising for treating landfill odors, with advantages of durability and environmental friendliness. In this study, charcoal sludge compost was utilized as the main effective component of a novel alternative landfill cover and the in situ control of sulfur-containing odors from municipal solid waste landfilling process was simulated under nine different operating conditions. Results showed that five sulfur-containing odors (hydrogen sulfide, H2S; m

We have characterized a broad collection of extremophilic bacterial isolates from a deep subsurface mine, compost dumping sites, and several hot spring ecosystems. Spore-forming strains isolated from these environments comprised both obligate thermophiles/thermotolerant species (growing at > 55 °C; 240 strains) and mesophiles (growing at 15 to 40 °C; 12 strains). An overwhelming abundance of Geobacillus (81.3%) and Bacillus (18.3%) species was observed among the tested isolates. 16S rRNA sequence analysis documented the presence of 24 species among these isolates, but the 16S rRNA gene was sho

Vermicompost (VC), a widely used premium organic fertilizer, is the by-product of symbiotic interactions between earthworms and microorganisms living within them. It has been postulated that phytohormones are plausible "magic compounds" in VC that are responsible for making them such good fertilizers. Thus, a novel approach involving ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) was developed as a fast and efficient sample preparation method to screen for different classes of phytohormones in VC by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The indiscriminate use of plastic products and their inappropriate management and disposal contribute to the increasing presence and accumulation of this material in all environmental zones. The chemical properties of plastics and their resistance to natural degradation lead over time to the production of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics, which are dispersed in soil, water, and air and can be absorbed by plants, including those grown for food. In agriculture, MPs can come from many sources (mulch film, tractor tires, compost, fertilizers, and pesticides). The possible effects of this type
