The time during OCP adoption or discontinuation is often unprotected by condoms. However, concurrent missed pills and condom nonuse increase pregnancy and infection risk even among stable OCP users. Understanding motivation for method usage may improve education and prevention techniques.

Bar and hotel workers (n=519) in Moshi, Tanzania were interviewed to obtain information about potential predictors of condom use. Samples were collected for the diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV. Consistent condom use was defined as always using condoms with sexual partners in the past five years. Overall consistent condom use in this population was 14.1%. In multivariate analyses, consistent condom use was inversely associated with low condom self-efficacy (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 0.20; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.06-0.71), low condom knowledge (AOR, 0.11…

We conducted this study to determine the factors associated with high-risk sexual behaviour and condom use among men and women who participa … kely to practise high-risk sexual behaviour. About 4% of women and 15% of men reported to have used condoms during their last sexual encounter. Condom users were significantly more likely to practise high-risk sexual behaviour. Overall, no major changes in sexual behaviour and condom use were observed during the period between the two surveys. Predictors …

Abstract In this study we examine determinants of intended condom use with casual and steady sex partners among drug users. Our aim was to find out whether anticipated regret and psychopathology represent additional factors in explaining condom use behaviour, on top of the constructs defined in traditional psychosocial models of behaviour. A questionnaire measuring intentions, attitude, beliefs, personal norm, subjective norm, descriptive norm, self-efficacy and anticipated regret toward condom use with steady and casual sex partners, and the Symptom Checklist '90 (to measure dimensions of psy

OBJECTIVE: To measure the impact on sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence of a female condom introduction and risk-reduction program at Kenyan agricultural sites.
DESIGN: We conducted a cluster-randomized trial to determine whether a replicable, community-level intervention would reduce STI prevalence.
METHODS: Six matched pairs of tea, coffee and flower plantations were identified. The six intervention sites received an information/motivation program with free distribution of female and male condoms, and six control sites received only male condoms and related information. Partici…

This article tests a behavioral model of condom use for four groups of female commercial sex workers. Data were drawn from a study of 614 female sex workers conducted in Bali, Indonesia. AIDS knowledge, risk behaviors, and factors related to condom use varied substantially among the four groups of women and reflect the social context of their work. Interventions for each group need to reflect these differences. Important factors to consider include the level of AIDS and STD knowledge in their environment, the characteristics of the clients served, and the degree of supervision that they receiv

Determinants of multiple sexual partners and condom use among adults were assessed through a population-based survey in one urban, one semi-urban and one rural community in the Arusha region, northern Tanzania. The study samples were obtained by randomly selecting clusters of 10 households from the 3 communities. Informed verbal consent was sought from each respondent for participation in the study. High-risk sexual behaviours and condom use were assessed using a structured questionnaire. It was observed that significantly more men than women reported having multiple sexual partners (49% vs 25

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the consequences of having a physically abusive primary partner on the condom use and sexual negotiation practices of young African-American women.
METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 165 sexually active African-American women aged 18 through 29 in San Francisco, Calif.
RESULTS: Women in abusive relationships were less likely than others to use condoms and were more likely to experience verbal abuse, emotional abuse, or threats of physical abuse when they discussed condoms. They were more fearful of asking their partners to use condoms, worried more about …

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of patient defined non-regular sexual relationships and other risk behaviours on the incidence of sexually … l balanitis (p < 0.03) and a greater likelihood of no infection being detected (p = 0.0002). Use of condoms with non-regular partners was much more frequent than with regular partners (d = 21.4%, 95% CI = 16.7, 26.1). However, we found evidence of oral transmission of urethral gonorrhoea and chlamydial infection among men who reported always using condoms …

BACKGROUND: Sexual behaviour data are crucial for understanding the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Over a period (1987-1992) … m use among 18-35 year old women has increased over the period, particularly with foreign partners. Condoms are used primarily as contraception. The prevalences of STD with high transmission rates are not reduced by inconsistent condom use, while the prevalences of STD with low transmission rates are reduced by both consistent and inconsistent condom use. …

An acceptability study of the female condom undertaken at New York's Harlem Hospital between August 1993 and February 1994 enrolled 52 women aged 18-57, 41 of whom (79%) used the female condom at least once. Of these, one-half used the female condom at least three times and 40% used it once; on average, women used it 2.4 times. Two-thirds of users liked the female condom either very much or somewhat, 20% were neutral and 15% stated that they did not like it. One-half of the women reported that their partner liked the device, while 17% said he felt neutral about it and approximately one-quarter

This paper examines questions concerning condom use and determinants of change in use by inner-city youths who appear to be in the direct path of the AIDS epidemic. Detailed information gathered in interviews with 548 youths in 1989-90 and 1991-92, provide a history of change in condom use and HIV-related high-risk behaviors. Condom use as a whole increased with time and age. Positive beliefs concerning condoms and awareness of HIV transmission were determinants of increases in use, and negative beliefs were determinants of decreases. Nevertheless, those youths who engaged in the highest HIV-r…

We examined the AIDS Risk Reduction Model (J. Catania, S. Kegeles, & T. Coates) in a sample of unmarried heterosexual adults with an HIV risk factor (n = 716). Labeling one's sexual behavior as risky was associated with having a history of sexually transmitted diseases, particularly genital herpes, and fewer stereotypic health beliefs. For people with secondary sexual partners, greater condom commitment was related to increased labeling, supportive condom norms, and greater enjoyment, and high levels of condom use were related to greater condom commitment, supportive norms, greater enjoyment,

Heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to increase, especially among injecting-drug users (IDUs) and their sex partners. During 1991, 22% of women with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the United States reported having had sex with a male IDU; this risk behavior was second to injecting-drug use (48%) as a transmission category for women. To better understand how to reduce heterosexual transmission of HIV, a study on condom use among male IDUs on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, was conducted as part of CDC AIDS Community Demonstrat
