Bacterial contamination of surgical instruments in 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy: Incidence and risk factors.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of surgical instrument contamination associated with microincision vitrectomy surgery. METHODS: Ninety-six eyes from 86 immunocompetent patients who underwent 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy from December 2023 to February 2024 in our institution were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Surgical instrument contamination was detected in 7 cases (7.3%). Bacterial species were isolated from the trocar, endoilluminator, and beveled probe. Postoperative endophthalmitis did not occur during the 2-month follow-up period. Use of preoperative antibacterial eye drops wa

Effectiveness of Omadacycline in a Patient with Chlamydia psittaci and KPC-Producing Gram-Negative Bacteria Infection.

Chlamydia psittaci is one of the primary pathogens responsible for community-acquired atypical pneumonia. If not treated promptly, it can progress to severe pneumonia and may lead to multiple organ dysfunction as well as secondary infections with multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Omadacycline, a novel aminomethylcycline antibiotic derived from tetracycline, exhibits high activity against various bacterial strains. This case report describes a patient who developed severe pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci in conjunction with a MDR bacterial infection. Despite initial treatment with moxi

T helper cell-dependent, microbial superantigen-mediated B cell activation in vivo.

We have utilized a severe combined immune-deficient (SCID) mouse adoptive transfer model to explore the in vivo immunostimulatory effects of bacterial superantigens (SAg). B cell reconstituted SCID recipients were treated with the Staphylococcus aureus-derived toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1) alone or in conjunction with syngeneic L3T4+ TSST-1-reactive Th cells. Over several months of study, the repetitive administration of TSST-1 resulted in a prompt, transient increase in serum IgG levels. This response required both biologically active TSST-1 and Th cells. These findings demonstrate that

Next-generation membrane-active glycopeptide antibiotics that also inhibit bacterial cell division.

Resistance to vancomycin, a life-saving drug against Gram-positive bacterial infections necessitates developing alternative therapeutics. Herein, we report vancomycin derivatives that assimilate mechanisms beyond d-Ala-d-Ala binding. The role of hydrophobicity towards the structure and function of the membrane-active vancomycin showed that alkyl-cationic substitutions favored broad-spectrum activity. The lead molecule, VanQAmC10 delocalized the cell division protein MinD in Bacillus subtilis, implying an impact on bacterial cell division. Further examination of wild-type, GFP-FtsZ, or GFP-FtsI

riboSeed: leveraging prokaryotic genomic architecture to assemble across ribosomal regions.

The vast majority of bacterial genome sequencing has been performed using Illumina short reads. Because of the inherent difficulty of resolving repeated regions with short reads alone, only ∼10% of sequencing projects have resulted in a closed genome. The most common repeated regions are those coding for ribosomal operons (rDNAs), which occur in a bacterial genome between 1 and 15 times, and are typically used as sequence markers to classify and identify bacteria. Here, we exploit the genomic context in which rDNAs occur across taxa to improve assembly of these regions relative to de novo sequ

Bugs versus drugs: addressing the pharmacist's challenge.

PURPOSE: To address how the high endemic levels of antimicrobial resistance and multidrug resistance in hospitals have challenged clinicians to select appropriate therapy for effectively treating bacterial infections among seriously ill patients. SUMMARY: Among gram-positive bacterial infections, differentiating between healthcare-associated and community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections is becoming more difficult and can seriously impact therapeutic strategies and hence outcomes. Furthermore, the rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria

Kinetics and minimal inhibitory concentrations of ceftiofur in tear film following extended-release parenteral administration (Excede®) in dogs.

PURPOSE: Describe the pharmacokinetics of extended-release parenteral ceftiofur (Excede®) in canine tear film and compare these concentrations to minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ceftiofur against common ocular pathogens in dogs. METHOD: Six dogs of various breeds were enrolled. Disruption of blood-tear barrier was achieved with histamine-induced conjunctivitis to ensure clinical relevance of the results. Each dog received a single subcutaneous injection of 5 mg/kg Excede®, followed by tear collection with Schirmer strips at times 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, 1

Microbiological diagnosis and antimicrobial sensitivity profiles in diseased free-living raptors.

Free-living raptors (birds of prey) can act as reservoirs of potentially zoonotic agents, but they also can be affected by microorganisms as target hosts. In this retrospective study, microbiological results (n = 663) and antibiotic sensitivity profiles (n = 108) of bacterial isolates were analysed from diseased free-living raptors. Sixty-nine percent of cases (n = 457) yielded bacteria: 58% were in pure culture and 42% were of different species. Remarkably, samples from necropsies (47%) had higher percentage of pure isolations than those obtained from clinical (31%) samples (P < 0.001). Among

Conjunctivitis due to Neisseria sicca: a case report.

We report the first case, in Medline-based literature, of conjunctivitis caused by gram negative diplococcus, Neisseria sicca. Although it is not widely accepted as such, isolation from cultures of repeated eye swab samples suggests that N. sicca may be a pathogen in conjunctival infections. Positive culture for this organism should not be readily dismissed. Such conjunctivitis responded favorably to treatment with netilmicin eye drops.

Canine and feline primary ocular bacterial infections.

Bacterial infections are frequently associated with diseases of the eyelids, cornea, and conjunctiva. Animals sustaining KCS commonly have bacterial infections of the external eye owing to a lack of antimicrobial properties present in the normal tearfilm. Infection can occur in the nasolacrimal duct or lacrimal sac, which is referred to as dacryocystitis. Severe corneal ulcers are frequently infected with bacteria, especially Pseudomonas sp. Three new topical ophthalmic antibiotics have recently become commercially available: ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin.

Francisella tularensis Infection Causing Parinaud Oculoglandular Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome is a unilateral granulomatous palpebral conjunctivitis associated with preauricular, submandibular, and cervical lymphadenopathies. Several infectious diseases can cause Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, usually with a conjunctival entry. The most common underlying pathology is cat scratch disease, followed by the oculoglandular form of tularemia. Diagnosis is usually a serious challenge as these infections are themselves rare. On the other hand, Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome may be a rare manifestation of more common disorders (eg, tuberculosis,

Characterization of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains isolated from patients with conjunctivitis.

The conjunctivitis produced by Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the less frequently reported clinical form of gonococcal infection. We aim to phenotypically characterize N. gonorrhoeae isolated from conjunctivae sites. A total of six cases of this disease were notified in the Camagüey province, Cuba. All the strains isolated were penicillin-producing, showed the serogroup WI and exhibited the same antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and plasmid profile (2.6-3. 2-24.5). The results contribute to the characterization of N. gonorrhoeae strains circulating in our environment.
