CONTEXT: The Museum of Anatomy and Embryology Louis Deroubaix attached to the Laboratory of Anatomy, Biomecanics and Organogenesis, ULB, Brussels, possesses in its liquid collections a cephalic extremity of a lamb suffering from strophocephaly. The origins have not been determined. The trunk and the limbs are resected. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The piece has been studied and photographed. A volumic computed tomography acquisition has been performed with a Siemens Volume Zoom. For pedagogic and museological purposes, surface reconstructions and 3D printing have been obtained. RESULTS: An otocepha

Skeletal facial deformity in patients with β thalassemia major: Report of one Tunisian case and a review of the literature.

β Thalassemia is an inherited genetic disorder of hemoglobin synthesis characterized by a reduction of β chains of globin. Typical features of patients with β thalassemia are skeletal modifications, particularly in the skull and in the facial bones. In thalassemia major, involvement of the facial skeleton can result in severe disfigurement, often referred to as "rodent facies". Various surgical approaches to correct the facial deformity have been advocated; however, treatment remains controversial. The worse the patient's systemic condition, the more unstable and more complicated the surgical

Steatocystoma multiplex associated with bilateral preauricular sinuses.

Steatocystoma multiplex is characterized by the development of numerous steatocystomas. The condition has occasionally been related to congenital bilateral preauricular sinuses. Herein, we present the third case of such an association, a 34-year-old male who was born with bilateral preauricular sinuses that were surgically repaired. When he was 14 years old, he presented with multiple steatocystomas on his forehead and temples, one of which was biopsied. There was no family history of the condition.

A rudimentary tragus in the nasopharynx: case report, literature review, and discussion of embryologic development.

We describe the rare case of a nine year-old girl with a several month history of mouth breathing and nasal obstruction due to a rudimentary tragus in the nasopharynx. We focus on the accessory tragus and its origins by describing the embryologic development of the external ear. Based on our review of the medical literature, this is the first report of a nasopharyngeal mass with a pathologic diagnosis of a rudimentary tragus.

Perceptions of family members of children with cleft lip and palate in hyderabad, India, and its rural outskirts regarding craniofacial anomalies: a pilot study.

Objective : This pilot study aimed to understand cultural perspectives on cleft anomalies in the community of Hyderabad, India, and its rural outskirts. Design : Interviews focusing on perceptions of cleft lip and palate were conducted using a 21-item interview guide approved by the director of the Gosla Srinivas Reddy Institute of Craniofacial Surgery (GSR). Settings : Interviews were conducted at GSR, a specialty surgical center located in Hyderabad, India. Patients and Participants : All patients who presented to GSR with either cleft lip, cleft palate, or cleft lip and palate at the time o

Management of an unusual presentation of Ascher syndrome.

Ascher syndrome is defined by the association between double lip, blepharochalasis, and nontoxic goiter. Because it is a rare disease, it is most often misdiagnosed, despite its implications for quality of life. We report a variation of an incomplete type of Ascher syndrome affecting the upper lip, upper eyelids, and lateral canthi of a young male patient. The surgical management, follow-up, and a brief overview of the syndrome are described. The results presented show an aesthetic and functional improvement of the facial deformities.

A unique case of tessier 30 and bilateral cleft lip and palate: a new clinical syndrome?

Background : Tessier 30 cleft is rare and sparsely reported in the literature. A unique case of an infant with a Tessier 30 cleft, bilateral cleft lip and palate, and other anomalies is presented. In addition to craniofacial anomalies, he had cardiac, gastrointestinal, and genitourinal defects. The constellation of these findings suggests the possibility of a new clinical syndrome. We present these findings and postoperative results following surgical treatment. Patient and Methods : A 37-week gestational male infant with multiple congenital anomalies is presented. Findings on clinical exam we

Ocular manifestations of Apert and Crouzon syndromes: qualitative and quantitative findings.

There are significant differences in the ocular manifestations of Apert and Crouzon syndromes. Here, we present qualitative and quantitative data about the oculo-orbital region to demonstrate these differences. Although ocular protosis and hypertelorism characterize both disorders, the nature of the orbital dystopia differs. In Crouzon syndrome, ocular proptosis is primarily caused by retrusion of the lateral and inferior orbital margins with a very short orbital floor. In Apert syndrome, the eyeglobe actually protrudes in relation to the cranial base and to the orbit, probably resulting from

Biometry of face and brain in fetuses with trisomy 21.

The aim of this study was to specify the early setting of the particular craniofacial morphology in Down syndrome during the fetal period from data based on postmortem examinations. The study included 1277 fetuses at 15-38 gestational weeks (GW): 922 control fetuses and 355 fetuses with trisomy 21, selected from fetopathology units in Paris. Body weight (BW) and nine dimensions of the face, skull, and brain were recorded: the outer and inner canthal distances (OCD, ICD), biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), brain weight (BrW), occipitofrontal diameters of left and right hemisphe

Occipital projections in the skeletal dysplasias.

Occipital projections of the cranium have been reported in a number of skeletal dysplasias and syndromes. We observed two cases of atelosteogenesis type I with a bony occipital projection. This finding has neither been noted nor reported in any form of atelosteogenesis. This led us to search the International Skeletal Dysplasia Registry for occipital projections, and we found them in four other syndromes in which they had not been reported. Thus occipital spurs are a non-diagnostic feature that can be found in at least ten distinct disorders as well as a normal variant.

Cranial remodeling devices: treatment of deformational plagiocephaly and postsurgical applications.

Since the first cranial remodeling devices were introduced in 1979, both their design and availability have continued to evolve. Today, these devices are used to treat deformational plagiocephaly (plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and dolichocephaly) and are used as adjuncts to surgery for craniosynostosis. In deformational plagiocephaly, the goal is to improve cranial symmetry and return the cranium to a more normal proportion. Postoperatively, these devices are used to provide stabilization and to enhance surgical outcomes. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of t

Bilateral Tessier No. 9 cleft.

The authors describe a patient with bilateral Tessier no. 9 cleft. This is the rarest of the rare craniofacial clefts. It is an upper lateral orbital cleft with a soft-tissue deformity that extends from the lateral third of the upper eyelid, through the lateral end of the eyebrow to the temporal scalp. The bony disruption extends from the superolateral orbital rim across the greater wing of the sphenoid to the upper squamous temporal area. The clinical and radiological examinations are reported. No surgical correction was necessary.

[Silver-Russell syndrome with panhypopituitarism (author's transl)].

This is a report on a 14 years old boy suffering from the unusual combination of Silver-Russell syndrome with panhypopituitarism. The Silver-Russell syndrome is a special form of primordial dwarfism characterised by congenital asymmetry, craniofacial dysmorphy and other anomalies. Its cause is unknown, intrauterine noxes and genetical factors are discussed. In the most cases results of hormone determinations are normal, but also cases with elevated or very low hormone levels were published. This is the first report about a Silver-Russell syndrome combined with panhypopituitarism.
