We propose a predictive Density Functional Theory (DFT) for the calculation of solvation free energies. Our approach is based on a Helmholtz free-energy functional that is consistent with the Perturbed-Chain Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (PC-SAFT) equation of state. This allows for a coarse-grained description of the solvent based on an inhomogeneous density of PC-SAFT segments. The solute, on the other hand, is described in full detail by atomistic Lennard-Jones interaction sites. We have recorded attenuated total reflection infrared spectra of binary mixtures in the (quasi-)ideal systems benzene-toluene, benzene-carbon tetrachloride, and benzene-cyclohexane. We used two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, principal component analysis, and multivariate curve resolution to analyze the data. Molecular structures of stable tautomers of dimedone [5,5-dimethyl-cyclohexane-1,3-dione and 3-hydroxy-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enone] were optimized and vibrational frequencies were calculated in five different organic solvents (dimethylsulfoxide, methanol, acetonitrile, dichloromethane and chloroform). Zirconyl methacrylate (I) and zirconyl-2-ethylhexanoate (II) were synthesized, and their adsorption isotherms from solutions onto synthetic hydroxyapatite were studied. The isotherms of methacrylic and 2-ethylhexanoic acids were also determined from the same solvents. Eucalyptus dives leaf oil, representing the piperitone chemotype, was characterized by GC/MS and evaluated for insecticidal efficacy against larval and adult stages of Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella. OBJECTIVE: Non-invasive biomarkers to monitor cerebral function in treated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease are required. Cerebral metabolite ratios (CMRs) measured by proton-MR spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) are a potential biomarker. Here, we compare two post-processing software packages to quantify CMRs.

Microsporidiosis is an opportunistic infection in organ transplant recipients and patients with other cellular immunodeficiency. Fumagillin is an effective treatment against Enterocytozoon bieneusi, one of the two main species causing the microsporidiosis involved in human diseases. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of a probable drug-induced aseptic meningoencephalitis, after administration of fumagillin in a kidney transplant recipient with microsporidiosis.

A total synthesis of (±)-phomactin B2 is described which has as its key step the intramolecular cyclohexadienone annulation of a Fischer carbene complex. The requisite carbene complex was prepared from geraniol in 11 steps and 12 % overall yield. The key cyclohexadienone annulation produced both rings of the [9.3.1] pentadecane ring system of phomactin B2 in a single step in 60% yield and as a 4:1 mixture of diastereomers.
