Gastroprotective effects of thymol on acute and chronic ulcers in rats: The role of prostaglandins, ATP-sensitive K(+) channels, and gastric mucus secretion.

Thymol, a monoterpene phenol derivative of cymene, is found in abundance in the essential oils of Thymus, Origanum, and Lippia species. The present study investigated the gastroprotective actions of thymol (10, 30, and 100 mg/kg, p.o.) in the acute (ethanol- and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced ulcers) and chronic (acetic acid-induced ulcers) ulcer models in rats. Some of the mechanisms underlying to the gastroprotective effect of thymol were investigated in the ethanol-induced ulcer model. Gastric secretion parameters (volume, pH, and total acidity) were also evaluated by the pylor

Exosomal MALAT1 expression associated with the cardioprotective effects of carvacrol in acute doxorubicin-induced cardiac injury: Potential involvement of Nrf2/Keap1-related signaling.

Doxorubicin remains an indispensable component of many chemotherapy regimens; however, its clinical use is limited by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity that may progress to dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the phytochemical carvacrol on cardiac function, apoptosis, and Nrf2/Keap1-related gene expression, as well as its association with extracellular vesicle-associated MALAT1 expression. Rats received oral carvacrol treatment for two weeks prior to a single 20 mg/kg doxorubicin injection to induce acute cardiac injury. Cardiac function a

Partnering essential oils with antibiotics: proven therapies against bovine Staphylococcus aureus mastitis.

INTRODUCTION: There is an urgent need to develop therapeutic options for biofilm-producing Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Therefore, the renewed interest in essential oils (EOs), especially carvacrol, linalool and eugenol, has attracted the attention of our research group. METHODS: Multidrug resistance and multivirulence profiles in addition to biofilm production of S. aureus strains isolated from cows with mastitis were evaluated using both phenotypic and genotypic methods. The antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of EOs were tested using both in vitro and molecular docking studies.

Pharmacological Inhibition of the Temperature-Sensitive and Ca2+-Permeable Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid TRPV3 Channel by Natural Forsythoside B Attenuates Pruritus and Cytotoxicity of Keratinocytes.

The temperature-sensitive and calcium-permeable transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 (TRPV3) channel abundantly expressed in keratinocytes plays important functions in skin physiology. Dysfunctional gain-of-function TRPV3 gene mutations cause genetic Olmsted syndrome characterized by periorificial keratoderma, palmoplantar keratoderma, inflammation, and severe itching, which suggests that pharmacological inhibition of overactive TRPV3 function may be beneficial in treating pruritus or skin disorders. To test this hypothesis, we identified natural compound forsythoside B as a TRPV3 inhibito

Natural compounds targeting multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii: Anti-Biofilm, anti-resistance, and synergistic strategies.

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a major cause of nosocomial infections. The emergence of drug-resistant strains has made most current antibiotics ineffective. The limited number of antibiotics currently in development has prompted the development of innovative strategies. One of these strategies is the use of natural compounds with potent antibacterial activity. Among them, carvacrol, thymol, cinnamaldehyde, curcumin, quercetin, eucalyptol, linalool, catechin, limonene, geraniol, coumarin, and eugenol have demonstrated considerable activity against A. baumannii. Natural compounds primar

Therapeutic potential of thymol, carvacrol, and biogenic silver nanoparticle against avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC): alternatives to the use of antimicrobials.

Antimicrobial resistance represents a significant threat to global public health, and poultry production is a critical sector within this context. Since the use of antimicrobials in poultry farming can promote the selection of resistant bacterial strains, the search for effective alternatives is essential. Thymol and carvacrol, two aromatic monoterpenes, as well as biogenic silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNP) have antimicrobial potential. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the action of thymol, carvacrol, and bio-AgNP against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains with vi

Expression Suppression and Activity Inhibition of TRPM7 Regulate Cytokine Production and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome During Endotoxemia: a New Target for Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Main pathological features detected during sepsis and endotoxemia include over-secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Unfortunately, current clinical efforts to treat sepsis are unsatisfactory, and mortality remains high. Interestingly, transient receptor potential (TRP) melastatin 7 (TRPM7) ion channel controlling Ca2+ and Mg2+ permeability is involved in cytokine production and inflammatory response. Furthermore, TRPM7 downregulation has been shown to alleviate local symptoms in some models of sepsis, but its effects at a systemic leve
