KCa3.1 potassium channels are critical for cAMP-dependent chloride secretion and cyst growth in autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by numerous fluid-filled kidney cysts. Net fluid secretion into renal cysts is caused by transepithelial transport mediated by the apical cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator chloride channel, which leads to cyst enlargement. Here we found that forskolin, a potent adenylyl cyclase agonist, stimulated anion secretion by monolayers of kidney cells derived from patients with ADPKD. TRAM-34, a specific KCa3.1 potassium channel blocker, inhibited this current, and in vitro cyst formation and enlargement by the cell

Fully endoscopic supraorbital resection of congenital middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts: report of 2 cases.

Intracranial congenital arachnoid cysts are benign intra-arachnoidal fluid collections with a wall composed of arachnoid cells encompassing a cavity containing a fluid similar to cerebrospinal fluid. This cavity frequently communicates with the subarachnoid space. Arachnoid cysts are reported to account for about 1% of all intracranial space-occupying lesions. The most frequent localization of congenital intracranial arachnoid cysts is in the middle cranial fossa, constituting more than half of the cases reported in the literature. We report our use of a fully endoscopic supraorbital approach

Arthroscopic Excision of a Deep Infrapatellar Cyst.

The knee joint is surrounded by multiple bursae, which are fluid-filled sacs whose main function is to reduce friction during movement. Extrusion of fluid from the bursa sac due to trauma or overuse can lead to the formation of cysts in the adjacent region. Operative treatment for cysts involves excision, traditionally performed as open surgery, which is associated with complications such as poor wound healing or recurrence. This Technical Note describes the arthroscopic excision of a deep infrapatellar cyst as an alternative to open surgery.

Ultrasonography of hemorrhagic splenic cysts.

Cysts arising from the spleen are much less common than those arising from other organs such as kidney, liver, and ovary (1). Hemorrhagic cysts of the spleen are rare (1), but we have encountered two patients with this entitiy. The ultrasonograms in each patient demonstrated gravity-dependent layering of two fluids of distinctly different echogenicity. The fluids were contained within a spherical mass. Acoustic enhancement was exhibited behind the mass in each case. This suggested the diagnosis of hemorrhagic cyst.

Atypical findings of perineural cysts on postmyelographic computed tomography: a case report of intermittent intercostal neuralgia caused by thoracic perineural cysts.

BACKGROUND: Perineural cysts are sometimes found incidentally with magnetic resonance imaging, and clinical symptoms requiring treatment are rare. Perineural cysts typically exhibit delayed filling with contrast medium on myelography, which is one of the criteria used by Tarlov to distinguish perineural cysts from meningeal diverticula. We present a case of multiple thoracolumbar perineural cysts, one of which was considered the cause of intermittent intercostal neuralgia with atypical findings on postmyelographic computed tomography seen as selective filling of contrast medium. CASE PRESENTA

[A seminal vesicle cyst treated by transurethral resection: a case report].

A 40-year-old man with dysuria was referred to our department on November, 18, 2004. A transabdominal ultrasonography revealed a cystic mass arising from his bladder neck. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the cyst to be homogeneous and ovally shaped with a clear margin. Bilateral vasography showed the compression of the left seminal vesicle by the cyst and there was communication between the cyst and the left seminal vesicle for diagnosis of the seminal vesicle cyst, percutaneous needle aspiration was performed. The aspirated fluid included microscopical spermatozoa

Osteolytic processes in human radicular cysts: morphological and biochemical results.

In an attempt to verify the nature of bone resorption processes on the bone surrounding radicular cysts, fragments of cysts with the adjacent bone tissue were studied by morphological, cytochemical and ultrastructural methods. Cyst fluid was analysed for its content of cytokines with osteolytic activity. The cyst wall exhibited several connective tissue extensions which penetrated the adjacent bone. Numerous multinucleated tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cells were seen at the tip of the intraosseous extensions of the cyst capsule and in direct contact with the bone tissue.…

A comparative analysis of ultrasound and serology for the diagnosis and post-treatment monitoring of cystic echinococcosis in experimentally infected sheep.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most significant zoonotic diseases globally, affecting both humans and livestocks. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of ultrasound (US) and serological methods as early diagnostic markers for both post-infection and post-treatment follow-up of CE in experimentally infected sheep. An hydatid cyst fluid was aspirated and 20,000 viable protoscoleces were administered orally to a dog. After 50 days, all adult parasites were collected. The eggs were extracted and used for the experimental infection of 14 lambs (11 experimental and 3 control).…

Prevalence, extension and characteristics of fluid-fluid levels in bone and soft tissue tumors.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, extension and signal characteristics of fluid-fluid levels in a large series of 700 bone and 700 soft tissue tumors. Out of a multi-institutional database, MRI of 700 consecutive patients with a bone tumor and MRI of 700 consecutive patients with a soft tissue neoplasm were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of fluid-fluid levels. Extension (single, multiple and proportion of the lesion occupied by fluid-fluid levels) and signal characteristics on magnetic resonance imaging of fluid-fluid levels were determined. In all patients,

A pyogenic, ruptured Baker's cyst induced by arthroscopic pressure pump irrigation.

Post-steroid septic arthritis can be treated with irrigation pump assisted arthroscopic synovectomy. The high-intra-articular fluid pressures can force the pyogenic fluid into a pre-existing Baker's cyst. The cyst can rupture and with the pre-existing steroid induced immune-suppression, the calf abscess will be hard to control. Therefore, thorough investigation with an ultrasound-guided aspiration followed by an early drainage of the collection is warranted and mandatory. Close monitoring for the development of a deep thrombosis of the popliteal vein is required.

Prenatal Detection of Vesico-Allantoic Cyst: Ultrasound and Autopsy Findings.

Introduction: The vesico-allantoic cyst is a communication between the fetal bladder and the allantois through a patent urachus.Case Report: We describe a 17-week of gestational age (WGA) fetus with a 40 x 30 mm vesico-allantoic cyst. At 19 WGA, ultrasound (US) detected bilateral dilatation of renal pelvis (5-6 mm), hydroureters, and hypospadias. Amniotic fluid, umbilical cord flow, and fetal biometry were regular. Due to uncertain prognosis, the parents opted for legal termination of pregnancy. Autopsy confirmed the prenatal findings, also revealing intestinal malrotation and Meckel's diverti

Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome in a rheumatoid arthritis patient with swollen calf and persistent itching: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Baker's cyst is a benign lesion that results from degenerative or inflammatory diseases of the knee joint. When Baker's cyst ruptures, it may simulate deep vein thrombosis known as Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome with calf pain, swelling and redness. Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome without thrombus in popliteal veins has distinct treatment choice than deep vein thrombus. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we presented a 47 year-old male rheumatoid arthritis patient with complaints of redness, pain and swelling on his right calf. Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome was diagnosed due to

Uptake and secretion of host proteins by Taenia crassiceps metacestodes.

Although the presence of intact host proteins in the cyst fluid of cyclophyllidean metacestodes has been well documented, the underlying reason for protein uptake is poorly understood. To investigate this discrepancy, both the cyst fluid (CF) and excreted/secreted (E/S) proteins were collected in vitro from Taenia crassiceps metacestodes 16 wk postinfection in Balb/cJ female mice. The CF and E/S were subsequently immunoblotted using rabbit anti-mouse whole serum antibodies as a probe. The results show that whole host proteins were not only internalized by metacestodes but also secreted as well…

Differentiation of simple renal parenchymal cyst and calyceal diverticulum.

BACKGROUND: Calyceal diverticulum is the cystic eventration of the upper urinary tract within the renal parenchyma, which gives the first impression of a simple renal cyst and therefore can easily be misdiagnosed. We conducted a study to assess the role of static-fluid magnetic resonance (MR) urography in the differentiation of renal parenchymal cysts and calyceal diverticulum in comparison with focused renal ultrasonography (US). METHODS: Focused renal US, static-fluid, and excretory MR urography studies of 45 children who were admitted to our pediatric nephrology department with a diagnosis

A Rare Presentation of a Branchial Cleft Cyst: Can It Cause Syncope in a Pediatric Patient?

Branchial cleft cysts (BCCs) are a congenital malformation most commonly seen in children and adolescents. BCCs are usually incidental findings and are benign in nature. In this report, we present a case of a 13-year-old female with syncope as a rare complication of a fluid-filled second BCC. The patient initially presented with a unilateral non-tender swelling on the right side of the neck and submandibular region, which was suspicious of an inflammatory process. After initial lab investigations came back negative, imaging studies of the neck with computed tomography (CT) with intravenous con

Bartholin gland cyst in a transgender male: case report of a rare occurrence.

This case report highlights the importance of a wide differential diagnosis in transgender patients. A 77-year-old transgender (female-to-male) with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI) and obstructive voiding difficulties presented with a perineal cyst. Further examinations, including computed tomography (CT) and puncture, revealed that the patient had a symptomatic Bartholin gland cyst, a phenomenon that normally only affects women. In his gender confirmation surgery (GCS) 30 years before, the patient's female labia minora and Bartholin glands were used to lengthen the urethra for the ph

Lethal outcome after percutaneous aspiration of a presumed ovarian cyst in a neonate.

Most surgeons agree that complex neonatal ovarian cysts, regardless of size, warrant operative intervention. Management of simple cysts >4 cm is still controversial, although many favor intervention because of the increased risk of torsion. Whereas laparoscopic cyst resection is favored by some, others prefer less invasive percutaneous needle aspiration. We present a newborn infant who was admitted with sepsis and respiratory failure after home delivery. Ultrasound done on day 8 to check for umbilical venous line placement incidentally showed a simple cyst measuring 3.6 x 5.9 x 6.9 cm that was
