Pain and depression experienced by women with interstitial cystitis.

The goal of this study was to better understand the experience of women suffering from interstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic pain condition that has, as of yet, received little attention from psychosocial investigators. Eighty women with IC participated. The results from this study demonstrate that, in addition to frequency of voiding (the hallmark symptom of the disorder), IC sufferers also endure significant pain and depression. Levels of pain experienced by IC patients during their most painful flares exceed levels of pain experienced by other chronic pain patients. Similarly, levels of dep…

[Interstitial cystitis in case of primary Sjögren's syndrome].

A 53-year-old woman who had xerostomia for ten years was admitted to our hospital because of refractory lower abdominal pain and pollakisuria of five years duration. Although she had undergone surgical treatments including cholecystectomy, ovarian cystectomy and groin hemiorrhaphy, she still suffered from abdominal symptoms. A diagnosis of interstitial cystitis was confirmed by hydraulic distention during a cystoscopic examination and by histopathological examination of the bladder. Her symptoms disappeared soon after the cystoscopic procedure, which also had a therapeutic effect of interstiti…

Prevention of radioinduced cystitis by orgotein: a randomized study.

On the basis of previous experiences indicating that the anti-oxidant agent Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an effective drug in reducin … A/ 222 B). Apart from cutaneous side effects, a highly significant incidence of radioinduced acute cystitis and rectitis was detected in patients not treated by SOD. Which was similar to the delayed side effects. From our data we can conclude that SOD is effective in decreasing acute radioinduced damage, and also in preventing the appearance of more delay …

Interstitial cystitis: women at risk for psychiatric misdiagnosis.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a form of painful bladder disease, characterized by chronic urinary urgency, frequency, and pain without evidence of bacterial infection. Ninety percent of patients with IC are women. Somatization disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis, given most often to women who report a variety of symptoms, such as dysmenorrhea, burning in sex organs, dyspareunia, irregular menstrual periods, and painful urination. Because diagnosis of interstitial cystitis may take many years, health care providers must be alert to the risks of the overdiagnosis of psychiatric problems and the …

Interstitial cystitis. An overlooked cause of pelvic pain.

Interstitial cystitis is a disease primarily of young and middle-aged women that is characterized by pelvic pain, urinary frequency, and dyspareunia. Its cause is unknown, but defects in the protective glycosaminoglycan layer of the bladder mucosa may be responsible. The diagnosis is mainly one of exclusion. Cystoscopy reveals characteristic glomerulations in the bladder mucosa. Of the available treatments, the most common are intermittent hydrodilation of the bladder and intermittent intravesical instillation of dimethyl sulfoxide. Other methods and medications are currently under investigati…

Papillary and polypoid cystitis. A report of eight cases.

Eight patients from 20 months to 79 years of age (average, 49 years) with papillary or polypoid inflammatory lesions of the urinary bladder were studied. On cystoscopic examination or initial pathologic examination, several of the lesions were thought to be neoplasms. Their clinical and pathologic features, however, were typical for papillary and polypoid cystitis. Microscopic examination disclosed thin, finger-like papillae or broad-based polypoid lesions with prominent stromal edema typically associated with chronic inflammation. The lesions were covered by, and adjacent to, urothelium that …

Emphysematous prostatitis and cystitis secondary to Candida albicans.

Emphysematous cystitis is characterized by gas collection within the bladder wall and lumen. Often it is the result of aerobic urinary tract infections but it may be caused by gastrointestinal fistulas or iatrogenic surgical and diagnostic instrumentation. We report a case of emphysematous cystitis owing to Candida albicans with the incidental finding of emphysematous changes within the prostate gland.

Fleroxacin in the treatment of uncomplicated acute cystitis in women.

Twenty-four women with uncomplicated acute lower urinary tract infections proven by significant pretreatment bacteriuria (greater than or equal to 10(5) cfu/ml) were treated with a single oral dose of either 200 or 400 mg fleroxacin. Patients were checked for response to treatment five to nine days post therapy. Of the 24 patients initially included in the study, five were not available for assessment of efficacy. In 17 of the remaining 19 women bacteriological cure was achieved.

[Clinical evaluation of ofloxacin in the treatment of acute cystitis].

Ofloxacin (OFLX) was administered to 236 female patients with acute cystitis. Of them 164 patients who satisfied the criteria proposed by the UTI Committee, Japan were examined for the efficacy of the treatment, but all cases were included in the study of the side effects of the drug. In the 65 patients who received 300 mg (3 divided doses) of OFLX per day, the overall clinical efficacy was excellent in 66.2% and moderate in 33.8% of the patients. In the 99 patients who received 600 mg (3 divided doses) of OFLX per day, the overall clinical efficacy was excellent in 79% (P less than 0.076) and…
