Impact of Clinical Study Implementation on Data Quality Assessments - Using Contradictions within Interdependent Health Data Items as a Pilot Indicator.

INTRODUCTION: Contradiction is a relevant data quality indicator to evaluate the plausibility of interdependent health data items. However, while contradiction assessment is achieved using domain-established contradictory dependencies, recent studies have shown the necessity for additional requirements to reach conclusive contradiction findings. For example, the oral or rectal methods used in measuring the body temperature will influence the thresholds of fever definition. The availability of this required information as explicit data items must be guaranteed during study design. In this work,

Congenital hydrocephalus: new Mendelian mutations and evidence for oligogenic inheritance.

BACKGROUND: Congenital hydrocephalus is characterized by ventriculomegaly, defined as a dilatation of cerebral ventricles, and thought to be due to impaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) homeostasis. Primary congenital hydrocephalus is a subset of cases with prenatal onset and absence of another primary cause, e.g., brain hemorrhage. Published series report a Mendelian cause in only a minority of cases. In this study, we analyzed exome data of PCH patients in search of novel causal genes and addressed the possibility of an underlying oligogenic mode of inheritance for PCH. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Anatomical insight into the variable terminal branching pattern of brachial artery: A narrative review.

Turkey respiratory and gut microbiota play important roles in promoting health and production performance. Loss of microbiota homeostasis due to pathogen infection can worsen the disease or predispose the bird to infection by other pathogens. While turkeys are highly susceptible to influenza viruses of different origins, the impact of influenza virus infection on turkey gut and respiratory microbiota has not been demonstrated. In this study, we investigated the relationships between low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) virus replication, cytokine gene expression, and respiratory and gut mi

Facilitating the Molecular Diagnosis of Rare Genetic Disorders Through Facial Phenotypic Scores.

With recent advances in computer vision, many applications based on artificial intelligence have been developed to facilitate the diagnosis of rare genetic disorders through the analysis of patients' two-dimensional frontal images. Some of these have been implemented on online platforms with user-friendly interfaces and provide facial analysis services, such as Face2Gene. However, users cannot run the facial analysis processes in house because the training data and the trained models are unavailable. This article therefore provides an introduction, designed for users with programming backgroun

ClinPrior: an algorithm for diagnosis and novel gene discovery by network-based prioritization.

BACKGROUND: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) have become indispensable tools to solve rare Mendelian genetic conditions. Nevertheless, there is still an urgent need for sensitive, fast algorithms to maximise WES/WGS diagnostic yield in rare disease patients. Most tools devoted to this aim take advantage of patient phenotype information for prioritization of genomic data, although are often limited by incomplete gene-phenotype knowledge stored in biomedical databases and a lack of proper benchmarking on real-world patient cohorts. METHODS: We developed ClinPrior,

Mapping the global research landscape on malnutrition for patients with chronic kidney disease: a visualization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is seen as a diverse disease and a primary contributor to global mortality. Malnutrition arises within chronic illness, which involves protein energy depletion and inadequate levels of essential nutrients. These factors increase the likelihood of death and the overall impact of the disease on affected individuals. Consequently, this study aims to utilize bibliometric and visual analysis to assess the current state of research, the latest advances and emerging patterns in the fields of CKD and malnutrition. METHODS: Extensive research was conducted usin

Real-world evidence with a retrospective cohort of 15,968 COVID-19 hospitalized patients suggests 21 new effective treatments.

PURPOSE: Despite the extensive vaccination campaigns in many countries, COVID-19 is still a major worldwide health problem because of its associated morbidity and mortality. Therefore, finding efficient treatments as fast as possible is a pressing need. Drug repurposing constitutes a convenient alternative when the need for new drugs in an unexpected medical scenario is urgent, as is the case with COVID-19. METHODS: Using data from a central registry of electronic health records (the Andalusian Population Health Database), the effect of prior consumption of drugs for other indications previou

Prevalence of mpox viral DNA in cutaneous specimens of monkeypox-infected patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Human monkeypox (mpox) disease is a multicountry outbreak driven by human-human transmission which has resulted in an international public health emergency. However, there is limited evidence on the positivity rate of skin lesions for mpox viral DNA. We aim to fill this gap by estimating the pooled positivity rate of skin samples with mpox viral DNA from mpox patients globally. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, seven databases and several preprint servers have been extensively searched until 17 January 2023 according to a prospectively registered protocol (PROS

A Robust Ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks for the Detection of Monkeypox Disease from Skin Images.

Monkeypox is a smallpox-like disease that was declared a global health emergency in July 2022. Because of this resemblance, it is not easy to distinguish a monkeypox rash from other similar diseases; however, due to the novelty of this disease, there are no widely used databases for this purpose with which to develop image-based classification algorithms. Therefore, three significant contributions are proposed in this work: first, the development of a publicly available dataset of monkeypox images; second, the development of a classification system based on convolutional neural networks in ord
