Increasing confidence and changing behaviors in primary care providers engaged in genetic counselling.

BACKGROUND: Screening and counseling for genetic conditions is an increasingly important part of primary care practice, particularly given the paucity of genetic counselors in the United States. However, primary care physicians (PCPs) often have an inadequate understanding of evidence-based screening; communication approaches that encourage shared decision-making; ethical, legal, and social implication (ELSI) issues related to screening for genetic mutations; and the basics of clinical genetics. This study explored whether an interactive, web-based genetics curriculum directed at PCPs in non-a

Frequency-specific alterations in functional connectivity in treatment-resistant and -sensitive major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) may involve alterations in brain functional connectivity in multiple neural circuits and present large-scale network dysfunction. Patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and treatment-sensitive depression (TSD) show different responses to antidepressants and aberrant brain functions. This study aims to investigate functional connectivity patterns of TRD and TSD at the whole brain resting state. Seventeen patients with TRD, 17 patients with TSD, and 17 healthy controls matched with age, gender, and years of education were recruited in this study. The b

A comparative analysis of SCALE-CTP and RAPID in determining the affected brain volumes of patients with ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) is widely used to treat acute strokes. The affected brain volume, measured based on the threshold value in the calculated CTP map, has helped guide treatment decisions. We proposed a new software program developed for CTP analysis, SCALE-CTP, and compared the affected brain volumes estimated using RAPID and SCALE-CTP. METHODS: We recruited 362 individuals from the local hospital to evaluate the concordance between SCALE-CTP and RAPID in predicting affected brain volumes, including relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) <30 % and time-to-maximum con

Hemodynamic comparisons of different shunt positions and geometrical model simplification strategies in the simulation of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS).

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a widely used surgery for portal hypertensive patients, whose potential postoperative complications are closely related to the hemodynamic condition of the portal venous system. The selection of shunt position in the surgery may affect the postoperative hemodynamics; however, it is difficult for clinical studies to investigate the influence. Therefore, this study aims to employ the computational model simulating TIPS to compare the hemodynamic differences resulting from different shunt positions, and also to investigate the influences of

Parathyroid Surgery for Primary Hyperparathyroidism in 2026.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the most common parathyroid disease and one of the most common endocrine disorders. It results from autonomous overproduction of parathyroid hormone, which in the classic form of the disease causes hypercalcaemia. The ready access to biochemical testing in high-income countries has moved the disease spectrum from a classic symptomatic presentation to a biochemical anomaly that is asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. Untreated PHPT, however, remains associated with significant consequences. This review summarizes up-to-date concepts in the diagnosis, imag

A Renal-Clearable Tantalum Contrast Agent Enables Precise CT Diagnosis and Subtyping of Acute Kidney Injury.

Precise diagnosis and subtyping of acute kidney injury (AKI) are crucial for clinical decision-making and prognosis. However, current in vivo imaging techniques lack the necessary precision, sensitivity, and resolution to meet this demand. Here, we report a renal-clearable, tantalum-rich carbon dot (Ta-rCD) contrast agent that enables high-performance computed tomography (CT) imaging for noninvasive visualization and differentiation of multiple AKI subtypes. The Ta-rCDs are synthesized via a simple and efficient air-assisted carbonization method, featuring ultrahigh Ta content (48%), gram-scal

3D VOSNet: Segmentation of endoscopic images of the larynx with subsequent generation of indicators.

Video laryngoscope is available for visualizing the motion of vocal cords and aid in the assessment of analyzing the larynx-related lesion preliminarily. Laryngeal Electromyography (EMG) needs to be performed to diagnose the factors of vocal cord paralysis, which may cause patient feeling unwell. Thus, the problem is the lack of credible larynx indicators to evaluate larynx-related diseases in the department of otolaryngology. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a 3D VOSNet model, which has the characteristics of sequence segmentation to extract the time-series features in the video laryngos

BO-ALLCNN: Bayesian-Based Optimized CNN for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Detection in Microscopic Blood Smear Images.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a deadly cancer characterized by aberrant accumulation of immature lymphocytes in the blood or bone marrow. Effective treatment of ALL is strongly associated with the early diagnosis of the disease. Current practice for initial ALL diagnosis is performed through manual evaluation of stained blood smear microscopy images, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. Deep learning-based human-centric biomedical diagnosis has recently emerged as a powerful tool for assisting physicians in making medical decisions. Therefore, numerous computer-aided diag

Identification of a hemodynamic parameter for assessing treatment outcome of EDAS in Moyamoya disease.

This work is a novel attempt to incorporate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques in the analysis of hemodynamic parameters of Moyamoya disease (MMD). Highly prevalent in Asian countries, MMD is characterised by progressive occlusion of the intracranial Internal Carotid Arteries (ICA). We intend to identify a reliable hemodynamic parameter that can be used to gauge treatment outcome. This will aid surgeons in the perioperative management of MMD patients. We carried out CFD analysis on eight patients (5 female, 3 male) with MMD treated by EDAS (encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis) betwee
