A rare nonsyndromic case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor associated with multiple impacted supernumerary teeth.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumour characterized by a progressively slow growing pattern and symptomless behavior. The differential diagnosis between AOT and other odontogenic tumours, such as ameloblastoma, should be well conducted in order to avoid extensive ablative surgery. The present case report is of a 27 year old female who reported with a chief complaint of mild intermittent pain and a swelling which was gradually increasing in size, on the left mid-facial region since 6 months. Radiographic Investigations revealed a round uni-locular radiolucent

Mandibular adenomatoid odontogenic tumor: Radiographic and pathologic correlation.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a rare tumor of epithelial origin comprising 3% of all the odontogenic tumors. It is a benign, painless, noninvasive, and slow-growing lesion, with a relative frequency of 2.2-13% and often misdiagnosed as an odontogenic cyst on clinical examination. AOT affects young individuals with a female predominance, occurs mainly in the second decade, and usually surrounds the crown of unerupted teeth. This lesion is most commonly located in the anterior maxilla and rarely in the mandible. It is usually associated with an impacted canine. AOT frequently resembles

Supernumerary teeth in non-syndromic patients.

Hyperdontia or supernumerary teeth without associated syndrome is a rare phenomenon, as supernumerary teeth are usually associated with cleft lip and palate or other syndromes such as Gardner's syndrome, cleidocranial dysplasia, and so on. Five patients with supernumerary teeth visited our department. They had no familial history or other pathology, certain treatment protocols was modified due to the presence of supernumerary teeth. Non-syndromic supernumerary teeth, if asymptomatic, need to have periodical radiographic observation. If they showed no variation as they impacted in the jaw, care

Intramural calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare lesion of the jaws. It accounts for about 1% of all odontogenic tumors. The CEOT occurs primarily in the molar-premolar region of the mandible, and 52% of cases are associated with an unerupted tooth. This report describes an unusual case in a 37-year-old woman. The tumor arose in the molar area of the right mandible, appeared radiographically as a radiolucent lesion, and was thought to be a dentigerous cyst in association with an impacted first molar. The lesion was enucleated. Microscopic examination showed it to be a dental sac, w

Perilesional and Contextual Radiomic Features Improve Differentiation of Odontogenic Cysts on Panoramic Radiographs.

Background: Radiographic differentiation of odontogenic cysts remains challenging due to overlapping imaging features and limited specificity of conventional assessment. Radiomics offers a quantitative approach to extract imaging biomarkers that may improve non-invasive lesion characterization. Accurate differentiation among cyst subtypes is clinically relevant, as different odontogenic cysts may warrant different management and follow-up strategies. Methods: This study included 63 patients with histopathologically confirmed odontogenic cysts (odontogenic keratocyst [OKC], n = 33; radicular cy

Inflammation-Modified Odontogenic Keratocyst Mimicking an Inflammatory Cyst: A Clinically Silent Case.

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst with distinctive histopathological features and a recognized potential for recurrence. However, secondary inflammation may significantly alter or obscure its classical histopathological features, resulting in diagnostic overlap with inflammatory odontogenic cysts. A 40-year-old male patient presented with an incidentally detected, well-defined radiolucent lesion in the left posterior mandible associated with an impacted third molar. The lesion remained asymptomatic for approximately 11 years. Radiographic findings initially sugge

A Clinicopathological Approach to Odontogenic Cysts: the Role of Cytokeratin 17 and bcl2 Immunohistochemistry in Identifying Odontogenic Keratocysts.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are developmental cysts of the jaws that require proper diagnosis due to their potential for local aggressive growth and recurrences. OKCs have a typical parakeratotic epithelium demonstrating transepithelial cytokeratin 17 (CK17) and basal bcl2 staining on immunohistochemistry (IHC), which distinguishes them from other common jaw cysts. Secondary to inflammation, the epithelial lining may be altered and loses the typical IHC phenotype. The aim of the present study was to analyse a series of consecutive jaw cysts for their expression of CK17 and bcl2 and assess h

High expression of osteopontin and CD44v6 in odontogenic keratocysts.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are more aggressive and more osteolytic lesions than dentigerous cysts (DCs) and radicular cysts (RCs). Osteopontin (OPN) is related to cancer metastasis and bone destruction. Binding of OPN to its cell membrane receptors integrin alphav and CD44v6 can enhance tumor cell motility, migration, invasion and spread. This study assessed the possible contribution of OPN, integrin alphav and CD44v6 to the local aggressive behavior and osteolytic ability of OKCs. METHODS: We used an immunohistochemical method to examine the expression of OPN, integri

Role of HIF-1α and CASPASE-3 in cystogenesis of odontogenic cysts and tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts and tumors are the most relevant lesions that affect the gnathic bones. These lesions have in common the formation of cystic areas and this common feature may suggest involvement of similar mechanisms. The hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), a responsive protein to hypoxia and caspase-3, an irreversible apoptosis marker, may contribute to cyst formation. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the immunoexpression of these proteins in odontogenic cysts and tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty cases of ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT) (n =

Identification of RANKL in osteolytic lesions of the facial skeleton.

RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand) promotes osteoclast differentiation, stimulates osteoclast activity, and prolongs osteoclast survival and adherence to bone. Abnormalities of the RANKL/RANK/osteoprotegerin system have been implicated in a range of diseases, including osteoporosis. To date, no work has been done in osteolytic lesions of the facial skeleton. In this study, specimens of ameloblastomas, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and radicular cysts were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis for RANKL and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). Oral manifestation and root canal therapy of the patient with mucopolysaccharidosis.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency in enzymes that participate in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as heparin sulfate and dermatan sulfate. Left untreated, patients show progressive mental and physical deterioration due to deposition of GAGs in organs. Death often occurs due to cardiac or respiratory failure before patients reach their early twenties. MPS has several oral and dental manifestations. An enlarged head, short neck, and open mouth associated with a large tongue are major characteristics of MPS patients. Dental comp
