Are "Human Factors" the Primary Cause of Complications in the Field of Implant Dentistry?

Complications in medicine and dentistry are usually analyzed from a purely technical point of view. Rarely is the role of human behavior or judgment considered as a reason for adverse outcomes. When the role of human factors is considered, these are usually described in general terms rather than specifically identifying the factors responsible for an adverse event. The impact of cognitive and behavioral factors in the explanation of adverse events has been studied in other high-stakes areas such as aviation and nuclear power. Specific protocols have been developed to reduce rates of human erro…

Intraoral Dissection of the Mimetic Muscles: Application to Dentistry and Oral Surgery.

Mimetic muscles contract and pull the overlying skin toward the muscle's bony attachment. Numerous books and articles have shown the mimetic muscles via cadaveric dissection. However, for dentistry and oral surgery, the mimetic muscles have not been detailed from intraoral dissection. Recently, several papers have addressed various mimetic muscles in relation to intraoral dissection. However, to our knowledge, there has been no overview of these muscles beneath the oral mucosa. Here, we review the literature concerning the mimetic muscles as revealed during intraoral dissection, create novel i…

Dental care and dentistry practice in the Medieval Medical School of Salerno.

Even though dental care is sometimes erroneously considered a modern practice, written records from major ancient civilisation all around the world date back to several millennia BC. In particular, in the Middle Ages, among the tenth and thirteenth centuries, the illustrious Medical School of Salerno in Italy, the most important institution in the Western world for the diffusion of medical knowledge, disseminated through its precepts the importance of oral hygiene and practiced specific dental therapies for tooth decay, gingivitis, paradentosis and halitosis among others. Interestingly, severa

[The fight against malnutrition in older adults: new aproaches in dentistry].

A minimal oral treatment aiming a clean and comfortable mouth could be very helpful in malnutrition control of dependent elderly persons. In such a case, it is necessary and generally it is enough to perform dental scaling and/or extractions with anxiolytic premedication (oral or rectal diazepam). Most of times, such minimal dental care can be performed at bedside, avoiding patient's stress and displacement to a dental surgery. The nursing staff can reassure the residents and their families on the absence of dentures, because saliva would be even more important than teeth. Actually, there is a

Oral microflora and periodontal disease: new technology for diagnosis in dentistry.

Periodontitis is a disease that affects and destroys the tissues that support teeth. Tissues damage results from a prolonged inflammatory response to an ecological shift in the composition of subgingival biofilms. Three bacterial species that constitute the red complex group, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola, are considered the main pathogens involved in periodontitis. In the present study a real-time PCR based assay was designed to detect and quantify red complex species, then used to investigate 146 periodontal pocket samples from 66 periodontitis patie

Anatomy and clinical applications of the maxillary nerve in dentistry: a literature review.

UNLABELLED: Few reports in the literature have addressed the course of the maxillary nerve, its regional branches and their significance in anaesthetic procedures. It was observed that the maxillary nerve varies in its branching pattern and the knowledge of the course and distribution of these branches may be useful for dental surgeons and anaesthetists while working in this region. Keeping these points in view, this review is aimed at presenting information about the course, distribution, possible variations, clinical significance and the anaesthetic applications of the maxillary nerve and it

Dentistry and molecular biology: a promising field for tooth agenesis management.

Tooth agenesis is the failure of tooth bud development, causing definitive absence of the tooth. It is the most common dental anomaly, affecting up to one-quarter of the general population. The main cause is related to abnormal function of specific genes which play key roles during odontogenesis, particularly MSX1 and PAX9. MSX1 is a transcription factor highly expressed in the mesenchyme of developing tooth germs, whereas PAX9 is a transcription factor that shows a direct relationship with craniofacial development, particularly the formation of the palate and teeth. Despite the high frequency

Neural tube defects and their significance in clinical dentistry: a mini review.

Neural tube defects are common congenital malformations that could be apparent at birth or manifested in later stages of life. Morbidity is high in anencephaly, whereas in spina bifida, there are neurological and motor disorders. These defects deserve paramount importance in clinical dentistry. Latex allergy, dental caries, difficulty in mouth opening, and sitting in a dental chair are common problems. There is a high risk of anaphylactic response during anaesthesia. There could be associated craniosynostosis causing maxillary deficiency, and malformed sella turcica might be seen. An associati…

Application of computed tomography for supernumerary teeth location in pediatric dentistry.

Conventional radiographs provide bi-dimensional images of three-dimensional structures limiting optimal treatment planning. To overcome this deficiency, Computed Tomography (CT) has been used as a diagnostic method in Medicine and Dentistry. CT allows for supernumerary teeth location, the establishment of positional relations with other teeth, and the assessment of surrounding bone thickness; thus, facilitating surgical access and technique choice while reducing the procedure time, of great importance in pediatric dental care. The aim of this study was to present the possibility of applying CT…
