Is there a complex relation between social anxiety disorder, childhood traumatic experiences and dissociation?

BACKGROUND: A possible relationship has been suggested between social anxiety and dissociation. Traumatic experiences, especially childhood … ent disorders were dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (DDNOS), dissociative amnesia, and depersonalization disorders. Average scores on LSAS and fear and avoidance sub-scale averages were significantly higher among the high DIS-Q group (p < .05). In a logistic regression taking average LSAS scores as the dependent variable, the five independent variables …

This study aimed to assess t … sociations between emotional exhaustion and total violence (p=0.012) and verbal violence (p=0.016); depersonalization and total violence (p=0.021) and verbal violence (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: The results presented here indicated that there was a strong relation between burnout and violence experienced by physicians working in emergency units. Violence in the emergen …

[Hallucinations during treatment with hydrochloroquine].

INTRODUCTION: We report an unexpected cenesthetic hallucination-type neuropsychiatric side effect with hydrochloroquine (Plaquenil) in a patient treated for an erosive plantar lichen planus. OBSERVATION: A 75 year-old woman was hospitalized for a handicapping erosive plantar lichen. Treatment with hydrochloroquine (400 mg/day) was initiated, associated with topical corticosteroids and a short course of oral acorticosteroids (0.5 mg/kg/day of methylprednisolone). After 10 days of treatment, a short episode of temporo-spatial disorientation occurred, followed by a feeling of depersonalization a…

Conceiving a child to save a child: reproductive and filial ethics.

I conclude that Mary and Abe's decision to conceive a child to save a child does not impose harm on persons or on relationships in the family. Nor does it evince a lack of respect for the child they have conceived. The ethical guidelines that support this conclusion can now be summarized. First, actions should not depersonalize or otherwise endanger personal relationships. Second, although ideally personal relationships are initiated and continued for their own sake, after a personal relationship has been established and sustained the motives for establishing it recede in importance. Third, th

Functional recovery trajectories in cannabis-induced first-episode psychosis: The role of dissociative symptoms in the discrepancy between symptomatic improvement and functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Functional recovery in cannabis-induced first-episode psychosis (FEP) remains incompletely understood. Dissociative symptoms, fr … seline dissociation independently predicted trajectory membership (OR=3.24 per SD, p < 0.001), with depersonalization/derealization showing the strongest associations. Dissociation mediated 35% of cannabis's effect on functional outcomes (β=-0.15, 95%CI [-0.25,-0.06]); combined with depression and hopelessness, psychological mediators accounted for 76% of total eff …

Virtual reality improves embodiment and neuropathic pain caused by spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in body ownership and chronic neuropathic pain in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) using multisensory own body illusions and virtual reality (VR). METHODS: Twenty patients with SCI with paraplegia and 20 healthy control participants (HC) participated in 2 factorial, randomized, repeated-measures design studies. In the virtual leg illusion (VLI), we applied asynchronous or synchronous visuotactile stimulation to the participant's back (either immediately above the lesion level or at the shoulder) and to the virtual legs as seen on a VR head-mounted displ

A case of rapid conversion to psychosis of delusional misidentification associated with derealisation, verbal memory impairment and FDG-PET imaging abnormalities.

The delusional misidentification syndromes, occurring within the context of different nosological settings, such as schizophrenia, are psychopathological phenomena related to the experience of depersonalisation/derealisation. Extensive research indicates that individuals meeting specific "prodromal" criteria, such as attenuated psychotic symptoms, brief intermittent psychotic symptoms, or functional decline and family history of schizophrenia have increased risk for impending psychosis. Despite depersonalisation and/or derealisation often precede psychotic onset, they are not included among th
