We report on a patient, seen in 1993, who developed sensitization to eosin from topical preparations. The patient had a positive patch test reaction to pure tetrabromofluorescein but not to its impurities separated by thin-layer chromatography. Our findings suggest that the allergen was eosin itself.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from metallic mercury is rare. Here we present the only 2 patients with relevant occupational mercury allergy detected at our clinic since 1974. The first patient was a dental nurse who became sensitized to metallic mercury from amalgam when handling uncured amalgam without protective gloves. The second patient had previously been sensitized to mercury from topical medicaments and developed work-related dermatitis when a mercury thermometer was broken at her place of work. Both patients had a positive patch test reaction to metallic mercury.

In order to contribute to the setting of an accurate diagnosis and prophylaxis of phytodermatitis (PD) and to better understand eczematogenic characteristics of some plants, we present results of an allergologic analysis and review the plants which most commonly cause FD in our material. A total of 15 patients presenting with FD was examined. Vulval itch and discomfort are often intractable symptoms and the response to standard therapy can be unsatisfactory. There is some evidence that vulvar sensitivity to irritants is higher than that of forearm skin, but the incidence of relevant allergic contact sensitivity amongst this patient population is unknown. The patch-test data over a 5-year period of 135 patients with persistent vulval symptoms were reviewed and 63 patients had positive results. More than two billion Band-Aid Brand Sheer Strips are used in the United States yearly, yet allergic contact dermatitis resulting from their use is nearly nonexistent. We report four patients with allergic reactions to these strips. One patient reacted to tricresyl phosphate, the plasticizer in the vinyl backing; another patient was allergic to 2,5-di(tertiary-amyl)hydroquinone, the antioxidant in the adhesive. In the other two patients, the allergic contact dermatitis remains unexplained.

A 63-year-old male school teacher with itchy depigmented macules on his left dorsum manus, left shoulder and abdomen presented at our clinic on 8 July 1986. He had practiced the incense ceremony for about 15 years, and had burnt several incenses and sandalwood. 48 h closed patch testing revealed perfume in the incenses was the cause. We assumed that perfume in the incense was volatized in air when incense was burnt; skin surface contact occurred with airborne particle, which dissolved in sebum; thus allergic contact dermatitis accompanied by depigmentation might arise.

Six men suffering from acute dermatitis had positive patch tests to Larrea (creosote bush). The lesions preferentially involved sun-exposed sites, simulating a photodermatitis, but also were on the legs and scrotum.
