Glyoxal is an important allergen for (medical care) cleaning staff.

While disinfection is essential in medical practice, it carries the risk of serious adverse effects, including allergic contact dermatitis. To assess the current importance of glyoxal [CAS 107-22-2] as occupational allergen, a retrospective descriptive analysis of records of an occupational dermatitis clinic in Osnabrück and of national surveillance data of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) in Germany and Austria was performed. Of 189 highly selected patients with occupational dermatitis tested with glyoxal (1% in water or, as trimer, 1% in petrolatum) in Osnabrück,

Sensitization to triglycidylisocyanurate (TGIC) with cutaneous and respiratory manifestations.

The case is presented of a man with allergic contact dermatitis and occupational asthma due to triglycidylisocyanurate (TGIC), which is used as a hardener in thermosetting powder paint. The contact dermatitis was confirmed by patch testing (TGIC 0.5% and 5% in petrolatum), and the occupational asthma was confirmed by bronchial provocation testing: two challenges to an aerosol of lactose containing TGIC (0.05% and 0.1%, w/w, each for 0.5+1+2+4 min) led to a maximal decrease in FEV1 of 22% and 31% after 6 and 4 h, respectively. Skin prick tests with unconjugated TGIC were possibly positive. This

Occupational skin disease in workers from the electronics industry in Singapore.

Of 149 workers from the electronics industry with occupational dermatoses seen at the Joint Occupational Dermatoses Clinic at the National Skin Centre, Singapore, 51.0% (76) were diagnosed to have irritant contact dermatitis, 40.9% (61) had allergic contact dermatitis, and 8.1% (12) had noncontact dermatitis. More than half of the patients were younger than 30 years of age. Common irritants were soldering flux, oils and coolants, solvents, and acids/alkalis. The most common allergens were nickel and resins, followed by rubber chemicals and the constituents of flux. Of the noncontact dermatitis

Extended documentation for hand dermatitis patients: Pilot study on irritant exposures.

BACKGROUND: Irritant exposure may be a contributory cause or the sole cause of (occupational) hand dermatitis. However, the documentation of irritant exposures in clinical practice is not standardized. OBJECTIVES: To examine the feasibility and usefulness of a form with different items addressing both occupational and non-occupational irritant exposures in a semiquantitative way. METHODS: Between May 2016 and May 2017, successive patients with work-related hand dermatitis, irrespective of aetiology, were examined in 9 specialized European departments. Department-specific investigation was su

Occupational skin diseases in Singapore 2003-2004: an epidemiologic update.

In this 2-year retrospective epidemiologic study of occupational skin disease in Singapore, there were 125 patients with occupational contact dermatitis. The mean age of patients was 33.8 years, with a male to female ratio of 5.3:1. Irritant contact dermatitis made up 62.4% of all cases, whereas allergic contact dermatitis constituted 37.6%. Wet work/detergents, oil/grease and solvents remained the 3 commonest irritants. There was also a significant increase in representation of workers from the food/catering industry in our study.

Occupational dermatoses in nursery workers.

BACKGROUND: Several workers at a nursery complained of skin problems. An occupational allergic contact dermatitis from tulip was diagnosed in 2 of the workers. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to survey the frequency of occupational dermatoses among nursery workers and to investigate whether the tulip sensitizer alpha-methylene-chi-butyrolactone traces all contact allergy to tulip. METHODS: A questionnaire was delivered to 41 employees, and everyone with a present or previous skin disease was offered a consultation including patch testing with the known tulip sensitizer as well as two ty

Irritant contact dermatitis: a review.

Irritant contact dermatitis is the most common form of contact dermatitis, and yet is often overlooked. Recent progress in understanding the pathogenesis has reignited the interest of clinicians in this area of dermatology. Irritant contact dermatitis is not a homogenous entity, but rather a number of subtypes contributing to different clinical presentations. The diagnosis of irritant contact dermatitis is often clinical, and may only be possible after the exclusion of allergic contact dermatitis with patch testing. There is no readily available diagnostic test. There is an incomplete understa

Acrylates as a significant cause of allergic contact dermatitis: new sources of exposure.

Acrylate monomers have a wide range of applications. Since the 1950s, many reports of occupational origin allergic contact dermatitis due to (meth)acrylate monomers have been published. During last decades, (meth)acrylate allergy has undergone an occupational shift from dentistry toward beauty industry and medical devices. The aim of the study was to conduct a literature review on acrylates as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis, current sources of exposure as well as identification of professional groups with an increased risk of this allergy and methods of effective prevention. The identification of a sensitizing component used in the manufacturing of an ink ribbon.

Skin diseases including dermatitis constitute ≈ 30% of all occupational illnesses, with a high incidence in the printing industry. An outbreak of contact dermatitis among employees at an ink ribbon manufacturing plant was investigated by scientists from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Employees in the process areas of the plant were exposed to numerous chemicals and many had experienced skin rashes, especially after the introduction of a new ink ribbon product. To identify the causative agent(s) of the occupational dermatitis, the murine local lymph node assa

Tobacco-induced contact dermatitis.

Tobacco and tobacco smoke are strongly associated with various skin conditions, among which contact dermatitis is of prime importance. The aetiological and clinical aspects vary according to the different tobacco production and processing steps. Contact dermatitis is frequent in tobacco harvesters, curers and cigar makers, whereas it rarely affects smokers and, only exceptionally, cigarette packaging workers. The skin sites involved also vary, according to whether the exposure is occupational or non-occupational. Tobacco contact irritation is far more frequent than contact allergy. The sensiti

Compensatability and contact dermatitis in the canning industry.

If reports from the Workmen's Compensation Commissioner are compared with international figures, dermatitis in South African industry appears to be underestimated. Compensation for occupational dermatitis in South Africa relies on the presence of a positive patch test. A prevalence study at a canning factory in the western Cape showed high rates of dermatoses. No association could be shown between dermatitis, intertrigo or chronic paronychia and patch-test positivity. It is argued that patch-test positivity is purely coincidental to the dermatoses and that patch testing has little role to play

Screening for hand dermatitis in healthcare workers: Comparing workplace screening with dermatologist photo screening.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are at increased risk for occupational contact dermatitis, owing to wet work exposure. Early detection and management improves outcomes. Although several diagnostic tools are available, none is appropriate for rapid screening. OBJECTIVES: To assess the validity and feasibility of the Hand Dermatitis Screening Tool in the acute healthcare sector. METHODS: Screening of 508 employees at three hospitals in Ontario, Canada was performed with the Hand Dermatitis Screening Tool either by an occupational health nurse (N = 225) or by self-administration (N = 283). Occupational skin diseases.

Primary care physicians will likely see a wide variety of occupational skin diseases in their practices, including allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, a variety of infectious diseases, and skin cancers. The ideal role of a medical practitioner involved in occupational dermatology is not only to diagnose and treat patients, but also to determine the cause of the occupational skin disease and to make recommendations for its prevention. Making the diagnosis and offering treatment, determining the cause, and recommending measures can be difficult undertakin

[Skin disorders and job fitness assessment].

BACKGROUND: Assessment of fitness for employment represents the final phase of the risk evaluation and health surveillance carried out during pre-employment and periodical medical examination. Dermatoses are frequent diseases both in the general population and workers, therefore job fitness assessment for workers with skin problems will frequently fall within the occupational health area. The physician must verify whether or not the dermatosis is an occupational disease and must adopt preventive measures to avoid any worsening or relapse of the clinical situation due to occupational factors.
