Scaling scalp diseases in 142 children were evaluated. Included were seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, tinea capitis, and psoriasis. Clinical signs were noted, and various treatments were then undertaken. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis responded well to treatment with antiseborrheic shampoo and topical corticosteroids. Atopic disease was more resistant to treatment, but did improve with less frequent shampooing and twice daily topical corticosteroid application. Selenium shampoo was a useful adjunct in the treatment of tinea capitis (cultures became negative at two weeks compared

This study investigated the disease spectrum in 209 patients with different types of scalp scaly cutaneous diseases. The quality of life of patients with the diseases were also analyzed. We found that seborrheic dermatitis (52.6%), dandruff (14.4%), eczema (17.7%) and psoriasis (15.3%) are common scalp scaly diseases. Eczema and psoriasis can be restricted to the scalp. The four diseases occur frequently in 20-40 years. Compared with patients with seborrheic dermatitis, those with dandruff were statistically different in terms of gender (P=0.004), occupation (P=0.010), drinking (P=0.007) and d

Although wound or traumatic myiasis is common in tropical countries, only recently cases associated with underlying dermatoses, such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis, have been reported. We describe a patient with seborrheic dermatitis and an ulcerated lesion on the scalp, in which the dermatological examination with the aid of dermoscopy allowed the identification of larvae (maggots) compatible with infestation by Cochliomyia hominivorax. Treatment was performed with oral and topical ivermectin, followed by manual extraction of the larvae.

Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) is an autoimmune dermatologic disease that typically presents with painful, superficial blisters that evolve into scaling erosions in a seborrheic distribution. This case study intends to demonstrate that due to the relative scarcity of the disease and its distribution on the body, PF can easily be misdiagnosed. We present a 43-year-old African American male that presented to the dermatology clinic with an 18-month history of non-pruritic, violaceous, scaling patches and plaques most prominent on the malar cheeks, upper chest and upper back. He had been evaluated at an

Keratosis lichenoides chronica is a rare disorder characterized by a distinctive seborrheic dermatitis-like facial eruption together with development of asymptomatic verrucosities on the limbs and the trunk, with a partially linear distribution. We report a case of a 35-year-old Syrian woman who presented with keratotic plaques and papules of the limbs for several years, and a seborrheic dermatitis-like facial eruption. A diagnosis of keratosis lichenoides chronica was clinically and histologically. Treatment with isotretinoin was without benefit. She had partial response to PUVA.

Topical corticosteroids are effective for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. The duration of treatment with mid- to high-potency formulations is limited by the well-known side effects associated with their long-term use; further, topical corticosteroids treat only the inflammation associated with the disease. This study assessed the antifungal activity of a new corticosteroid-free cream against Malassezia spp, which may be an important pathogenic factor in seborrheic dermatitis. This was a single-center, bilateral, open-label pilot study in 10 healthy volunteers. The nonsteroidal cream wa

To clarify the prevalence of skin disorders among dermatology patients in Japan, a nationwide, cross-sectional, seasonal, multicenter study was conducted in 69 university hospitals, 45 district-based pivotal hospitals, and 56 private clinics (170 clinics in total). In each clinic, information was collected on the diagnosis, age, and gender of all outpatients and inpatients who visited the clinic on any one day of the second week in each of May, August, and November 2007 and February 2008. Among 67,448 cases, the top twenty skin disorders were, in descending order of incidence, miscellaneous ec

BACKGROUND: Psoriasiform dermatitis is common in patients with AIDS. The expression of heat shock proteins by keratinocytes has been postulated to be a significant factor in the physiopathology of psoriasis and might be subject to modulation in HIV-infected patients.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the epidermal expression of 65 and 72 kd heat shock proteins (HSPs) in lesions of AIDS-associated psoriasiform dermatitis (AIDS-PD) and compare it with that in psoriasis vulgaris and seborrheic dermatitis in patients not infected with HIV.
