Estimating the Stature of an Ancient North Andean Population From Articular Breadths and Diaphyseal Diameters: An Extension of Anzellini and Toyne (2020).

OBJECTIVES: For anthropologists and forensic scientists, sex estimation using skeletally dimorphic traits is fundamental in biological profile reconstruction. Archaeogenetic research on past populations allows us to identify genetic sex generating opportunities to validate the accuracy of commonly used skeletal traits. We compare genetic sex estimates, derived from aDNA analysis of dental calculus, with macroscopic skeletal observations to ascertain the accuracy of trait-based estimates on British skeletons. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental calculus was sampled from 146 individuals from two Brit

Can Personalized 3D Kinematic Modeling Predict Loss of Pronation and Supination in Diaphyseal Forearm Malunions? A Clinical Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the clinical relevance of forearm fractures and malunions and the impact of a functional limitation, the link between forearm malalignment and limited pronation and supination remains poorly understood and still relies on anatomical alignment expressed as angulation. Using recently developed technologies, mechanisms that limit function can be automatically detected by modeling individual forearm kinematics using three-dimensional (3D) bone models of the radius and ulna. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated the accuracy of a personalized 3D kinematic model to identify limitatio

Diaphyseal forearm fractures without fluoroscopy: Titanium elastic nailing system (TENS): A paediatric case series from Nepal.

In resource-limited settings such as rural Nepal, the lack of intra-operative fluoroscopy often forces clinicians to choose between suboptimal conservative management or referral to distant centres. Our case series presents the feasibility of the titanium elastic nailing system for displaced childhood both-bone forearm fractures using tactile feedback and portable radiography instead of a C-arm. While the rate of open reduction was higher than in a fluoroscopy-guided series (2/9 for radius, 4/9 for ulna), all cases achieved stable intramedullary placement and clinical union. This approach offe

Comparative Study of Functional and Radiological Outcomes of Antegrade Versus Retrograde Titanium Elastic Nailing for Pediatric Ulnar Diaphyseal Fractures.

Background Pediatric forearm fractures account for approximately 40% of childhood skeletal injuries, with ulnar fractures being particularly prevalent. Titanium Elastic Nailing (TEN) offers an effective minimally invasive option for these injuries; however, the optimal nail entry point - antegrade (olecranon) versus retrograde (distal ulna) - remains debated. This study compared functional and radiological outcomes, complication profiles, and implant-related morbidity between the two approaches. Methods A retrospective comparative study was conducted from May 2023 to May 2025 at the R.L. Jalap

Antibiofilm-coated intramedullary nailing for tibial and femoral diaphyseal fractures at high-risk infection: outcomes of 103 consecutive patients.

BACKGROUND: Fracture-related infection (FRI) is a devastating complication of intramedullary nailing of tibial and femoral diaphyseal fractures. The present study evaluates the clinical efficacy of an antibacterially coated intramedullary nail in patients with high-risk tibial and femoral diaphyseal fractures. Open fractures, fractures requiring fasciotomy or closed fractures with Tscherne grade II or III soft-tissue damage were considered fractures at high risk of infection. METHODS: A single-centre observational study was conducted between January 2022 and December 2024, in accordance with

Entrapment of the median nerve within the radius following diaphyseal antebrachial fractures treated with nail osteosynthesis in two paediatric patients.

Antebrachial fractures are common among paediatric patients. Some exhibit neurological symptoms, making it initially challenging to determine nerve injury severity. We present two paediatric cases of median nerve entrapment within the radius following mid-shaft antebrachial fractures. Both cases showed persistent sensory and motor deficits, paraesthesia and pain in the distribution area of the median nerve after nail osteosynthesis. Nerve conduction studies and ultrasound suggested nerve entrapment at the fracture site, leading to surgical exploration and nerve autograft repair at 12 months (c

Finite element analysis of anterior spanning attachment devices for supporting biomechanical stability in diaphyseal femoral periprosthetic fracture fixation.

The incidence of periprosthetic femoral fractures has increased in recent years. Osteosynthetic stabilisation is challenging, particularly for UCS IV.3-C fractures. Lateral plate osteosynthesis is the gold standard; however, it allows excessive vibration, leading to plate breakage. Orthogonal double plate osteosynthesis has been established but requires considerable intraoperative dissection of the anterior extensor muscle. This work aims to analyse newly developed plate designs that demonstrate adequate vibration behaviour, which, in turn, promotes callus healing and causes less soft tissue t

Diaphyseal forearm fracture management in adolescent patients from 2011 to 2020: A multicenter study of surgery and regional anesthesia trends.

BACKGROUND: Diaphyseal forearm fractures are common traumatic injuries among children. There has been much debate on the use of intramedullary nailing (IMN) or plate fixation in the adolescent population (10-16 years of age). Furthermore, as ultrasound technology has advanced, the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided axillary brachial plexus block for children has dramatically improved. Therefore, anesthesia options for adolescent patients have increased in recent years. This study aimed to investigate recent surgical and regional anesthesia trends of diaphyseal forearm fractures in patien

Butterfly fragments in diaphyseal tibial fractures heal unpredictably: Should we be adopting other strategies for these high risk fractures?

INTRODUCTION: The natural history of diaphyseal tibial butterfly fragments is poorly documented. Numerous studies have analyzed risk factors for nonunions in the tibial shaft with known factors including Gustilo classification, ASA class, and cortical contact. However, the healing potential and ideal management of nonsegmental butterfly fragments in this setting remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the nonunion rate of diaphyseal tibial fractures with a butterfly fragment. METHODS: A performed a retrospective review of patients at a single academic Level 1 Trauma Center fro

Mechanical performance and implications on bone healing of different screw configurations for plate fixation of diaphyseal tibia fractures: a computational study.

Diaphyseal tibia fractures may require plate fixation for proper healing to occur. Currently, there is no consensus on the number of screws required for proper fixation or the optimal placement of the screws within the plate. Mechanical stability of the construct is a leading criterion for choosing plate and screws configuration. However, number and location of screws have implications on the mechanical environment at the fracture site and, consequently, on bone healing response: The interfragmentary motion attained with a specific plate and screw construct may elicit mechano-transduction sign

Treatment of forearm diaphyseal defect by distraction compression bone transport and continued distraction for radial head reduction: A case study.

Treatment of infected forearm nonunion and defects represents a difficult task for the operating surgeons. Conventional methods like composite and vascularized fibular grafts and the induced membranes filled with cancellous autografts or the Masquelet technique have been reported to be useful and successful, but sometimes it is difficult to predict the outcome and cannot address simultaneous deformities or the need to apply gradual distraction for reduction of a chronically dislocated radial head. Ilizarov technique has an answer for such conditions. We report a 43 years old man with infected

Critical differences between subtrochanteric and diaphyseal atypical femoral fractures: analyses of 51 cases at a single institution in Korean population.

UNLABELLED: There still remains controversy on the pathomechanism of atypical femoral fracture (AFF). The angle of lateral bowing and bone mineral density showed significant differences between subtrochanteric and diaphyseal atypical fracture groups. In addition to the use of bisphosphonate, mechanical factors might play important roles in the occurrence of AFFs. INTRODUCTION: Although AFF could be divided into subtrochanteric and diaphyseal fracture according to the location of fractures, there is a lack of evidence regarding differences between two fractures and etiology of the occurrence.

A new approach to local DCO in ankle fracture dislocations: external fixation with diaphyseal unicortical screws applied by local anaesthesia.

PURPOSE: Ankle fracture dislocations represent a great threat for soft tissue viability and articular instability. The use of a temporary ankle bridging ExFix plays a fundamental role in the local damage control orthopaedics while waiting for definitive synthesis. METHODS: For this prospective research, we have developed a full application protocol of innovative diaphyseal monocortical screws fixator (Unyco-OrthofixTM) exclusively under local anaesthesia. Rigid selection criteria allowed us to collect nine patients during a period of almost 2 years. VAS score was analysed for the feasibility

Bone Formation Parameters of the Biopsied Ilium Differ between Subtrochanteric and Diaphyseal Atypical Femoral Fractures in Bisphosphonate-Treated Patients.

Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are defined as atraumatic or low-trauma fractures located in the subtrochanteric or diaphyseal sites. Long-term bisphosphonates (BPs) are administered to prevent fragility fractures in patients with primary osteoporosis or collagen diseases who are already taking glucocorticoids (GCs). Long-term BP use is one of the most important risk factors for AFFs. Its pathogenesis is characterized by severely suppressed bone turnover (SSBT), but whether the characteristics of patients are different regarding to location of fracture site remains unknown. In this study, we

Elbow dislocation with ipsilateral diaphyseal fractures of radius and ulna in an adult-is it type 1 or type 2 Monteggia equivalent lesion?

Elbow dislocation with concomitant diaphyseal fractures of radius and ulna has been reported rarely. This injury could be included in Monteggia equivalent lesions based on the mechanism of injury, radiographic pattern and method of treatment as described by Bado. We report a rare case of Monteggia equivalent lesion in an adult with unclear mechanism of injury. The possible mechanism of injury, its management and the follow-up results were described. An attempt to solve the controversy regarding whether labeling it as type 1 or type 2 was made.

Posteromedial elastic stable intra-medullary nailing (ESIN) in volarly displaced metaphyso-diaphyseal distal radius fractures in child.

INTRODUCTION: The distal metaphyso-diaphyseal fractures of the radius with volar angulation are generally considered unstable. Too distal to be treated with classic elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) via a laterodistal approach and too proximal to be stabilized with simple conservative treatment, they are sometimes treated by plating. PATIENTS AND METHODS: To avoid the disadvantages of the open exposure necessary for this latter fixation and to prevent volar angulation while respecting the curvature of the radius, radial elastic nailing with posteromedial distal entry was used in 16
