Associations Between Healthcare Experiences, Mental Health Outcomes, and Substance Use Among Transgender Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) adults face significant barriers to healthcare, including healthcare denials, limited access to clinicians, and mistreatment by healthcare clinicians. While prior studies have explored the consequences of overt discrimination in healthcare, they often overlook the possible impacts of more subtle forms of discrimination. AIM: Is there a relationship between specific healthcare experiences, including both overt and subtle forms of discrimination, and mental health/substance use among TGNB adults? METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of the

Dilemmas of anonymous predictive testing for Huntington disease: privacy vs. optimal care.

Some persons at risk for Huntington disease (HD) seek predictive testing under the protection of anonymity to reduce the risk of insurance discrimination for themselves and their families. While Canadian and European health care systems seem to limit insurance discrimination to life and disability insurance, U.S. residents do not have national health insurance and are concerned about health insurance discrimination. Two persons residing outside Canada requested predictive testing anonymously. Their primary reason for doing so was to avoid the risks of medical insurance discrimination. After a

HD-tDCS to the lateral occipital complex improves haptic object recognition.

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has been shown to be safe and effective in modulating neuronal activity. The present study investigates the effect of anodal HD-tDCS on haptic object perception and memory through stimulation of the lateral occipital complex (LOC), a structure that has been shown to be involved in both visual and haptic object recognition. In this single-blind, sham-controlled, between-subjects study, blindfolded healthy, sighted participants used their right (dominant) hand to perform haptic di

Effects of aging and depression on mnemonic discrimination ability.

Aging and depression have been found to be associated with poorer performance in mnemonic discrimination. In the current study, a two-response format mnemonic similarity test, Cognitive Drug Research MST, was used to compare these effects. Seventy-six participants were tested; with 52 participants in the young group, aged 18-35 years, and 24 participants in the elderly group, aged 55 years or older. Twenty-two young participants and 10 elderly participants met DSM-IV criteria for MDD or dysthymia. Age-related deficits were found for lure identification and speed of response. Differences in spe

Recognition of emotions in autism: a formal meta-analysis.

Determining the integrity of emotion recognition in autistic spectrum disorder is important to our theoretical understanding of autism and to teaching social skills. Previous studies have reported both positive and negative results. Here, we take a formal meta-analytic approach, bringing together data from 48 papers testing over 980 participants with autism. Results show there is an emotion recognition difficulty in autism, with a mean effect size of 0.80 which reduces to 0.41 when a correction for publication bias is applied. Recognition of happiness was only marginally impaired in autism, bu

Flavour processing in semantic dementia.

The cognitive mechanisms for the analysis of flavour information remain poorly understood. Patients with semantic dementia (SD) could potentially provide a window on these mechanisms; however, while abnormal eating behaviour and altered food preferences are common in SD, flavour processing has been little studied in this disorder. Here we undertook a detailed investigation of flavour processing in three patients at different stages of SD. One patient with a clinical syndrome of logopenic aphasia (LPA) was studied as a disease control, and six healthy control subjects also participated. Olfacti

Specificity of action representations in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex.

The ability to recognize actions is important for cognitive development and social cognition. Areas in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex show increased activity when subjects view action sequences; however, whether this activity distinguishes between specific actions as necessary for action recognition is unclear. We used a functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation paradigm to test for brain regions that exhibit action-specific activity. Subjects watched a series of action sequences in which the action performed or the person performing the action could be repeated from a previous sca

Temporally graded retrograde amnesia following separate and combined lesions of the perirhinal cortex and fornix in the rat.

The involvement of the perirhinal cortex and the fornix in retrograde and anterograde amnesia in the rat was investigated in this experiment. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained on a series of five visual discrimination problems at distinct time intervals prior to receiving bilateral, electrolytic lesions of the perirhinal cortex or the fornix, combined lesions of both these structures, or sham operations. Following recovery from surgery, rats were retested on the preoperatively learned discrimination problems, as well as learning a new discrimination and discrimination reversal. Results ind

Long-term stability of equivalence relations in the absence of training or practice.

An adult male with mild mental retardation, whose laboratory history included training in a match-to-sample task on 16 arbitrary relations among 16 visual stimuli and 2 auditory stimuli, had performances that showed the development of 112 additional arbitrary relations that had never been reinforced. In the presented study on 2-year and 3-year follow-up tests for these derived relations, his performances remained stable despite the absence of opportunities to practice these relations between the tests and the absence of explicit feedback during the tests. The similarity to the long-term stabil

Development and Validation of a Measure of Psychological Distress After Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection: The Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection Distress Inventory.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a highly distressing cause of acute myocardial infarction. No SCAD-specific distress measure currently exists, with researchers relying on generic measures of anxiety, depression, and distress that fail to capture the psychological impacts unique to SCAD. We developed and validated the SCAD Distress Inventory (SDI) to provide a condition-specific distress measure. METHODS: The SDI was developed through a multistep process. First, 48 SCAD-related distress items were generated from focus groups with SCAD survivors (N=30) and relevant

Dutch translation and validation of the Stanford Gender-Related Variables for Health Research questionnaire: Associations with lifestyle and mental health.

This study aimed to validate the Dutch version of the Stanford Gender-Related Variables for Health Research (GVHR) questionnaire and explore sex differences in lifestyle factors, mental health, and health status. In 2021, 569 Dutch participants (54% women, 45% men, aged 20-80) completed the survey. Sex-stratified analyses examined associations with lifestyle (obesity, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity), mental health (depression, anxiety, stress), and overall health status. A seven-factor model best fit the data, revealing significant gendered differences. Women reported higher caregiver

Curb Your Positive Stereotypes: Counter-Stereotypical Interventions Improve Attention to Inequality and Discrimination Against Asian Americans.

Despite 1 in 10 Asian Americans living in poverty, their struggles are often overlooked due to the persistence of "model minority" stereotypes. This study investigates whether counter-stereotypical narratives-emphasizing either economic hardship or psychological challenges-can reduce stereotype-driven misperceptions and improve recognition of the inequalities faced by Asian Americans. Using a nationally representative U.S. sample (N = 2,983), these interventions moderated both trait-based beliefs (e.g., Asian Americans are inherently hardworking) and structural beliefs (e.g., Asian Americans e

EEG and haemodialysis. A structural survey of EEG spectral analysis, Hjorth's EEG descriptors, blood variables and psychological data.

Computerized EEG was performed in 20 patients with renal failure before and after haemodialysis (HD), applying spectral analysis and Hjorth's EEG descriptors in EEG quantification, correlation and factor analysis as statistical procedures to analyse the connections of EEG, blood variables and psychological performance. The main results were: (1) Moderate uraemic encephalopathy -- according to Kiley's (1971) standards -- was present in most of our patients, before and after HD. (2) Before HD, EEG slowing was most strongly connected with the creatinine level and EEG acceleration with hyperkalaem

Race, race-based discrimination, and health outcomes among African Americans.

Persistent and vexing health disadvantages accrue to African Americans despite decades of work to erase the effects of race discrimination in this country. Participating in these efforts, psychologists and other social scientists have hypothesized that African Americans' continuing experiences with racism and discrimination may lie at the root of the many well-documented race-based physical health disparities that affect this population. With newly emerging methodologies in both measurement of contextual factors and functional neuroscience, an opportunity now exists to cleave together a compre

Psychology and Indigenous People.

Whether there are common features inherent to the psychology of Indigenous peoples around the globe has been the subject of much debate. We argue that Indigenous peoples share the experience of colonization and its social and psychological consequences. We develop this argument across four sections: (a) the global history of colonization and social inequalities; (b) aspects concerning identity and group processes, including the intergenerational transmission of shared values, the connection with nature, and the promotion of social change; (c) prejudice and discrimination toward Indigenous peop

A quantitative comparison of psychological and emotional health measures in 360 plastic surgery candidates: is there a difference between aesthetic and reconstructive patients?

This study examines the utility of the aesthetic and reconstructive categorization for making treatment decisions in patients seeking facial surgery. A total of 360 patients with aesthetic or combined functional aesthetic deficits were included. Validated psychological scales were used as outcome measures. All subjects showed clinically significant levels of appearance-related distress, with highest levels in the aesthetic and lowest levels in the functionally impaired group. Significant gender differences were not found on any psychological measures. A small negative correlation was found bet

Pre-exposure prophylaxis use and discontinuation among Brazilian gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men: examining the role of internalized homonegativity and discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective HIV prevention strategy yet use and persistence among populations at high vulnerability to HIV in Brazil remains suboptimal. We sought to quantify internalized homonegativity and discrimination using multi-item validated instruments and to estimate their associations with PrEP use and discontinuation among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: A cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted from November 2021 to January 2022, recruiting a convenience sample of MSM through dating apps and social me

Frontal lesions do not alter the differential extinction of taste aversion conditioning in rats, when using two methods of sucrose delivery.

The frontal cortex is involved in the planning of behavioural responses and in the processing of their outcomes. Thus it contributes to several learning mechanisms, including those of conditioned taste aversion (CTA). A solution of sucrose drunk freely by a rat from a drinking tube-self-drinking protocol (SD)-was used as a conditioned stimulus in CTA. The intake of this solution was followed by gastric malaise. It produced an aversion to sucrose that withstood extinction over a week of repetitive tests. But, when the sucrose was perfused intra-orally (IO), i.e. not depending on any specific ac
