Heavy drinking relates to positive valence ratings of alcohol cues.

A positive family history of alcohol use disorders (FH) is a robust predictor of personal alcohol abuse and dependence. Exposure to problem-drinking models is one mechanism through which family history influences alcohol-related cognitions and drinking patterns. Similarly, exposure to alcohol advertisements is associated with alcohol involvement and the relationship between affective response to alcohol cues and drinking behavior has not been well established. In addition, the collective contribution that FH, exposure to different types of problem-drinking models (e.g. parents, peers) and pers…

Social context of drinking and alcohol problems among college students.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how social contexts of drinking are related to alcohol use disorders, other alcohol-related problems, and depression among college students. METHODS: Logistic regression models controlling for drinking frequency measured the association between social context and problems, among 728 current drinkers. RESULTS: Drinking for social facilitation was associated with drinking and driving and housing violations. Drinking in the context of motor vehicles was associated with alcohol abuse/ dependence. Drinking in a context of emotional pain was associated with clinical depressio…

Drinking patterns and myocardial infarction: a linear dose-response model.

BACKGROUND: The relation of alcohol intake to cardiovascular health is complex, involving both protective and harmful effects, depending on the amount and pattern of consumption. Interpretation of data available on the nature of these relations is limited by lack of well-specified, mathematical models relating drinking patterns to alcohol-related consequences. Here we present such a model and apply it to data on myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: The dose-response model derived assumes: (1) each instance of alcohol use has an effect that either increases or decreases the likelihood of an al…

Phototransformation of selected pharmaceuticals during UV treatment of drinking water.

The kinetics of Ultraviolet C (UV-C)-induced direct phototransformation of four representative pharmaceuticals, i.e., 17alpha-ethinylestradi … uticals appeared to be unaffected by the presence of natural water components. At the UV-C (254 nm) drinking-water disinfection fluence (dose) of 400 Jm(-2), the degree of depletion of the select pharmaceuticals at pH=7.0 in pure water was 0.4% for EE2, 27% for diclofenac, 15% for sulfamethoxazole, and 15% for iopromide, indicating that phototransformation …

P3 components and adolescent binge drinking in Southwest California Indians.

In adolescence, consuming a large number of drinks over a short interval of time (e.g. binging) is not an uncommon occurrence. Since adolescence is an important neurodevelopmental period, the effect of binge drinking on brain and behavior has become a significant health concern. The present study evaluated event-related potentials (ERPs) in young adult Southwest California Indians who had a history of binge drinking during their adolescence. One hundred twenty five participants who were currently 18-25 yrs of age who were free of Axis I psychiatric diagnoses were categorized as: 1) reporting n…

[Drinking and domestic violence: findings from clinical survey of alcoholics].

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the domestic violence in the families of alcoholics. We examined the actual state of domestic violence in alcoholics' families and compared this whith a national representative sample. The results are as follows: (1) Domestic violence in families of alcoholics is serious. (2) In such families, 63.5% of wives had been injured as a result of physical violence by the husband. (3) In 86.6% of such incidents, the husband or the woman herself had been drinking. (4) Physical, social and economical violence leads to the breakdown of marital relationships. (5) Af…

Predictors of problem drinking among older adolescent emergency department patients.

This study investigated consumption patterns, alcohol-related problems and predictors of problematic drinking among older adolescents. Two-hundred eighty older adolescents (148 males, mean +/- SD age = 18.5 [1.8] years) treated in two Emergency Departments (ED) completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Inventory Test (AUDIT) to identify problem drinkers. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of problem drinker status. Higher rates of problem drinking were found among participants who were treated for physical assaults or for acute alcohol intoxication than were found among participant…

Amphetamine increases schedule-induced drinking reduced by negative punishment procedures.

RATIONALE: d-Amphetamine has been reported to increase schedule-induced drinking punished by lick-dependent signalled delays in food delivery. This might reflect a drug-behaviour interaction dependent on the type of punisher, because no such effect has been found when drinking was reduced by lick-contingent electric shocks. However, the anti-punishment effect of amphetamine could be mediated by other behavioural processes, such as a loss of discriminative control or an increase in the value of delayed reinforcers. OBJECTIVES: To test the effects of d-amphetamine on the acquisition and mainten…

Drinking beer reduces radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes.

We here investigated and reported the effects of beer drinking on radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in blood lymphocytes. Human blood that was collected either before or after drinking a 700 ml beer was in vitro irradiated with 200 kVp X rays or 50 keV/microm carbon ions. The relation between the radiation dose and the aberration frequencies (fragments and dicentrics) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower for lymphocytes collected 3 h after beer drinking than those before drinking. Fitting the dose response to a linear quadratic model showed that the alpha term of carbon ions was significa…

Drinking water fluoridation: bone mineral density and hip fracture incidence.

The role of drinking water fluoride content for prevention of osteoporosis remains controversial. Therefore, we analyzed the influence of drinking water fluoridation on the incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures and bone mineral density (BMD) in two different communities in eastern Germany: in Chemnitz, drinking water was fluoridated (1 mg/L) over a period of 30 years; in Halle, the water was not fluoridated. BMD was measured in healthy hospital employees aged 20-60 years (Halle: 214 women, 98 men; Chemnitz: 201 women, 43 men, respectively) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Hip fracture…

Social context, perceived norms and drinking behavior in young people.

An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 1,283 middle school/high school students and 930 college students. The students responded to instruments assessing social context of drinking, perceived norms of drinking, alcohol use intensity, and frequencies of impaired driving (DWI) and riding with an impaired driver (RWID). Canonical correlation analyses revealed that in middle school/high school students, there are discernable patterns of association between social context, perceived norm and alcohol abuse measures. Drinking intensity for self was closely related to several social context va…

Mild maternal drinking and pregnancy outcome: perceived versus true risks.

Millions of fetuses worldwide every year are exposed to mild maternal alcohol consumption during the first trimester of pregnancy. Health professionals and agencies often suggest that even mild drinking can affect the fetus, despite many studies refuting this fact. To characterize women's perception of the teratogenic risk of alcohol we studied 30 nonpregnant adult women aged 19-52 years. They first watched a videotape which includes alarming information of fetal risk after mild drinking. Following the movie, women's views changed significantly towards believing that even one drink during preg…

Clozapine reduces water-drinking behavior in schizophrenic patients with polydipsia.

Disordered water balance, or polydipsia, is an underassessed and underreported phenomenon present in the severely psychiatrically disabled population. Prevalence rates for polydipsia range from 6.2 to 20%. We followed up five male patients (mean age 43) with chronic schizophrenia who met the Kane criteria for being treatment nonresponders and who, in addition, had marked polydipsia. Three patients had previously received medical care for hyponatremia and had to be placed on fluid restriction when admitted to the hospital. All patients exhibited polydipsia despite high doses of typical antipsyc

Drinking outcomes of alcohol abusers diagnosed as antisocial personality disorder.

Clinical research and wisdom suggest that alcoholics with antisocial personality (ASPs) disorders have poorer drinking outcomes after treatment than alcoholics without this disorder. The present study challenges this wisdom, suggesting that poor prognosis and response to treatment have been confounded by not covarying on pretreatment drinking measures. Thirty-one ASPs are compared with 118 non-ASPs randomly assigned to extended cognitive behavioral and relationship enhancement treatments. Thirteen to 18 months after treatment initiation, ASPs average more abstinent days than do non-ASPs. Drink…

Calcium channel blockade attenuates angiotensin II-induced drinking in rats.

Lateral ventricular administration of angiotensin II (ANG II) produces potent dipsogenic effects in water-sated rats. ANG II seems to require functional voltage-gated calcium channels on neurons throughout circumventricular brain sites to exert its effects. Although there are at least three types of calcium channels, only L-type calcium channel-blocking drugs have been reported to decrease drinking. A norm-referenced longitudinal study of medical student drinking patterns.

The alcohol consumption patterns of a single class of 121 medical students was assessed at six points over the course of 4 years of medical school training, along with other measures of drinking-related impairment, family history of alcoholism, personality, and psychosocial functioning. Research Diagnostic Criteria were applied to make diagnoses of alcoholism. Eleven percent of the class reported drinking at a level considered "heavy" by class social norms, most transiently. Eighteen percent of the class met criteria for alcohol abuse by virtue of drinking-related impairment during medical sch…

Central muscarinic activation elicits compulsive drinking behaviour in the rat.

Injection of bethanechol into the lateral cerebral ventricle of the rat induces a marked increase in drinking, within 30 min from administration. The response is dose-related, maximal water intake (6.1 +/- 0.55 mL; mean +/- s.e.) occurring at 10 micrograms of bethanechol. Peripheral administration of the agonist (up to 3 mg kg-1 i.p.) fails to elicit drinking. Among several specific antagonists only antimuscarinic drugs produced a significant inhibition of the response, suggesting that the compulsive drinking behaviour in the rat is caused by activation of central muscarinic receptors. The dri…

A multi-route exposure assessment of chemically contaminated drinking water.

This report provides an example of how a single source of contamination could potentially contribute to all routes of exposure. A modeling approach was used to estimate multiple exposure routes in an attempt to assess the health significance of gasoline-contaminated drinking water supplies. This model consisted of a two-compartment, indoor air quality equation that calculates the contribution made by ambient and indoor air contaminated by a pollutant volatilized from drinking water to that pollutant's inhalation burden. In addition, the model uses the traditional equations for assessing a poll…
