OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Anatomic variants of the jugular bulb (JB) are common; however, abnormalities such as large high riding JB and JB diverticulum (JBD) are uncommon. Rarely, the abnormal JB may erode into the inner ear. The goal of our study is to report a large series of patients with symptomatic JB erosion into the inner ear.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review in an academic medical center.
METHODS: Eleven patients with JB abnormality eroding into the inner ear were identified on computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bone.

Tinnitus due to otosclerosis may be caused by poor vibration of the inner ear fluids. The goal of this article is to suggest some explanations, to enhance future research work carried out by other authors on this important issue, and to show what are the results of surgery to relieve tinnitus in the author's experience. Only complete resolution of the tinnitus 1 year after surgery was taken into account in the assessment of the results.

We investigated the development of labyrinthitis in animals inoculated with guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV). These animals all became deaf eight days after inoculation into the perilymphatic compartment and showed severe inflammatory changes within the inner ear. Animals that received inactivated virus maintained their hearing throughout the observation period and exhibited normal cochlear morphology. A specific congenital ataxia may be caused by presence of mutant genes and by manganese deficiency during prenatal development in normal mice. Supplementation of the diet of mutant mice with manganese during prenatal development rectifies the aberrant development, resulting in normal behavior.
